It has been nice and mild here in SoCal all summer along the coast. Still, I don't wish drought or fires on anyone. I know how bad they can be.

I agree wholeheartedly on that last point. Certainly we all hope for the drought to end in Texas... and in a not-too-dramatic of a way. (i.e. without being flooded off the map.)

Best summer that I can recall here.

I don't know where you are, but I'll second that sentiment for here too. We average 13 days of 100+ temps and this year we haven't had a single 100+ day. Lake Tahoe is at its highest level in decades; I went to Sand Harbor a couple weeks back and there actually wasn't much beach left. A lot of the walkways to the sand were actually under water!

Let's us get together and pray for rain, y'all.

I've been wondering if this is the start of another "dust bowl" scenario like in the 1930's.

There's a pretty large area of the country affected by this, much of it agricultural.

California has gone through several droughts in the past 20 or so years, none as severe as what Texas/Oklahoma are getting now.

It's gotta suck to see many places flooding...and you're drying/burning up.

Let's us get together and pray for rain, y'all.
Yeah, and our drought ended this year officially (10 years + I think) thanks to two very rainy winters and the coolest summer in 75 years. This summer has probably been about average although it was very weird today. We had thunderstorms and 90 degree heat. Summer rains are pretty rare for us.

It reached almost 100 in Poway today (where I work). I live by the coast so it is cooler here but fuck it was hot at work today! Of course the A/C unit that feeds my department crapped out at around 2PM so by 4:30 it was over 80 degrees in my office.

I rode the Ducati in this morning and hit some wet roads due to the rain. Weird because it was nice and clear at my house when I left.

The weather we've had the past couple days has been awesome (compared to 110 degree temps), but it is indeed dry as hell. Honestly the dry air seemed worse today, when I went running that is, than any other day the past two months when it was much hotter.

We've been staying in the 92-98 range for about a month. Supposed to get to 98-99 tomorrow as well. HOPEFULLY, we'll be dropping back into the 80's pretty soon. Gawd-Damned electric bill is "redickyoulus."

Go ask your Governor to host another prayer vigil. Oh wait, that didn't work last time.

Today was pretty much the warmest day I can recall for the year at least and even stranger because of the rain. I also can't remember the last time when we got a real rain during the summer months. Low to mid 80's is pretty much the norm here in San Diego. Except for Poway, Escondido, Santee, basically any inland areas. They can easily get 10 degrees warmer.

One of my best friends lives in Bastrop, his house is gone. Burned Sunday morning I think. Talked to him today, he's got one pair of shoes and one pair of pants left. No one in his family was hurt, fortunately.

He's in pretty good spirits though. I asked him if he managed to salvage the scotch, he said "No, but I know where to buy some!"

Thinking about making a trip down there this weekend with a care package - any suggestions on what to take? I was thinking some easy type food and condiments (bread, sandwich meat, mustard mayo), toilet paper, a bottle opener (and something to open :) ) some dinnerware type stuff...?

Yeah, San Diego has about the best weather in the country all year long. Rarely too hot in the summer, nor too cold in the winter. Once you go 10 or more miles inland though...that's subject to change quickly. I've been to Anza Borrego when it was over 100...and they said it was cool for that time of year...

I think that got covered in about 80 of the posts above yours.

I felt like saying it one more time. Got a problem with that?

This is God trying to smite the glorious state of Texas. Obviously Perry wasn't praying hard enough.

That sucks. Not sure what to take. Bottle of wine, bottle of scotch, case of beer, and a Swiss army knife would be cool. I might be unusual, but I think MREs are damned good. If you can find some of those, it would make good portable food for him.

He's in some sort of rental house, crammed in with two other families I think. So they have running water and stuff. I'm trying to think of little things that you never realize you need until you don't have it. Swiss army knife is a good idea... maybe a leatherman thingy? Towels.. heck, maybe a book or three.

Austin averages 33 inches and we are under 7 inches for the year.

I think we finally broke 1" for the year this weekend. Typically we get 12-15" for the year, but then again I live in the actual desert.

BTW, my yard looks better than that first picture.

Does he have kids? If so, something to keep them occupied would be the most valuable thing you could give him. A DS and some games would go a long way towards keeping a child's mind off problems.

Son in college, daughter is soph or jr in HS. Not a gamer. :( Books would be for her, but I dunno what sort of book at all.
