One of my best friends lives in Bastrop, his house is gone. Burned Sunday morning I think. Talked to him today, he's got one pair of shoes and one pair of pants left. No one in his family was hurt, fortunately.

He's in pretty good spirits though. I asked him if he managed to salvage the scotch, he said "No, but I know where to buy some!"

Thinking about making a trip down there this weekend with a care package - any suggestions on what to take? I was thinking some easy type food and condiments (bread, sandwich meat, mustard mayo), toilet paper, a bottle opener (and something to open :) ) some dinnerware type stuff...?

Despite the fact that he did lose everything else, he's got his family and apparently one good friend. :)

Assuming his insurance company doesnt beat you to the punch, a grocery bag of non perishable essentials would be a good gesture along with some support.

In 1976, my grandmothers house burned down when one of my cousins was playing with fire in a closet. The clothes set on fire and he was afraid of being punished so just closed the door and left. I will never forget my grandmother crying as she sifted through her charred belongings the next day. Even though I was six, the memory is quite clear.

My grandfather rebuilt the house himself with the insurance money (he was a jack of all trades). He even rebricked the entire house by 1980. I dont know if being in the sun for so long contributed or not, but he died of melanoma in 1997.

Your support will definately be appreciated and remembered.

I don't know where you are, but I'll second that sentiment for here too. We average 13 days of 100+ temps and this year we haven't had a single 100+ day. Lake Tahoe is at its highest level in decades; I went to Sand Harbor a couple weeks back and there actually wasn't much beach left. A lot of the walkways to the sand were actually under water!

I am located about 500 yards from Austin MN. I still live in same house as when I was 4 and had the experiance of my life . I was told by whomever never to leave that place and many other things I was told . Its all coming together now

Finally saw my friend, he came into town to take care of some errands, we had lunch.

His story - He went out to play racquetball, saw firetrucks going the other way. Looked around, didn't see smoke, didn't think much of it. Said he normally wouldn't have even looked around, but he had noticed how windy it was. Played racquetball, then noticed about a zillion messages from his wife and daughter. Wife and daughter were able to grab their notebook of documents (insurance info and the like) and the family dog on the way out. Practically nothing else. He couldn't get back to his house, so he just had the clothes on his back. He had even left his wallet at home. He hasn't been back to his house, but he's seen one picture, looks like the brick chimney is the only thing standing.

He's involved in the rotary, was on the phone with some other guys talking about how to distribute some of the funds they have coming in. He was saying the ranchers and farmers probably needed it the most as they were hurting even before the fire.

He's living in a rental house with 2 other families now.

I gave him a stack of books, a frying pan, toilet paper, trail mix, various other foods, a bottle of wine, bottle opener and 4 cheap wineglasses, some other stuff.

National weather service annouced today that Texas set the record this year for the hottest summer Jun-Aug of any state since records have been kept. Beating the old record holder of Oklahoma in the dustbowl of 1934.

http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/44441386/ns/weather/?GT1=43001

Top four record summers are now

1. Texas 2011
2. Oklahoma 2011
3. Oklahoma 1934
4. Louisiana 2011

Saying it's been a brutal summer for the south is an understatement

If that isn't proof of global warming, I don't know what is.

They need to shoot the clouds. That way, the water in the clouds will spill out and it will rain.

If anything, Texans can pretend the clouds are:
- African Americans
- Mexicans
- Indians
- Gays
- Jews
- Arabs
- Muslims
- Chinese

- and so on and so forth

Keep your racial bias attitudes away from Anandtech. They are not desired here

Shouldn't this be ban worthy? At least vacation worthy.

You've already proved your the biggest racist here when you spout about how other comments are racist when they clearly aren't. You're like Jesse Jackson.

I think there is a vacation in your future at the very least

I think it's funny. Every time he posts, you think it can't get any stupider, yet he always manages to outdo himself shitting up the forums.
