One of my best friends lives in Bastrop, his house is gone. Burned Sunday morning I think. Talked to him today, he's got one pair of shoes and one pair of pants left. No one in his family was hurt, fortunately.
He's in pretty good spirits though. I asked him if he managed to salvage the scotch, he said "No, but I know where to buy some!"
Thinking about making a trip down there this weekend with a care package - any suggestions on what to take? I was thinking some easy type food and condiments (bread, sandwich meat, mustard mayo), toilet paper, a bottle opener (and something to open) some dinnerware type stuff...?
Despite the fact that he did lose everything else, he's got his family and apparently one good friend.
Assuming his insurance company doesnt beat you to the punch, a grocery bag of non perishable essentials would be a good gesture along with some support.
In 1976, my grandmothers house burned down when one of my cousins was playing with fire in a closet. The clothes set on fire and he was afraid of being punished so just closed the door and left. I will never forget my grandmother crying as she sifted through her charred belongings the next day. Even though I was six, the memory is quite clear.
My grandfather rebuilt the house himself with the insurance money (he was a jack of all trades). He even rebricked the entire house by 1980. I dont know if being in the sun for so long contributed or not, but he died of melanoma in 1997.
Your support will definately be appreciated and remembered.
