Wow that Fry's suck.

My old phone number on their computer has my name as qwerty aaaaaa and refunds were no problem.

Hell sometimes they put it back directly back to my card when the line is too long so I don't need that green paper.

3.10 is brutal, i've never had a problem with outpost going back six years now. The only thing that bugs me about them is their 3 hour hot deals on Polk Audio stuff! I want my center channel dagnabit!

yup they always tear apart the box for returns. i guess they've been burned by people rewrapping boxes with junk in em or parts with numbers that don't match.

Whenever you are in the right and the threaten to call the cops, let them. When the cop arrives you tell them yourside of the story. Then you ask how you proceed to file theft charges. Or proclaim you are making a citizens arrest for theft.

fry's is one notch below best buy when it comes to shady and unscrupulous practices. I make it a point to rip both stores off whenever I get the chance.

Also as others have stated that green sheet is basicaly a gift certificate, good at any fry's store. Simply go in and say you want to cash it out. They should oblige without any hassle at all.

lol Sugar land is way better part of town than NASA area wtf are you smoking.. our property values are through the roof...

and Frys in general rocks never had a problem with them.. delt with them all the time when I lived in Palo Alto CA. and still use the sugar land store about 1 time a week.. never had any issues and Ive returned alot of stuff..

read again...the guy clarified

I think you are mistaken thinking that the local news wouldn't help you. Check out KPRC 2 Troubleshooters, KTRK 13 Marvin Zindler, and KHOU 11 Defenders. They might not put you on the air, but they frequently help people out.

Also CVSin, Sugarland is not a "way better part of town than the NASA area". South Shore Harbor is an area that has some of the highest property values in the Greater Houston Area. You forget that many of the homes are on the water and that drives up the costs considerably. Sugarland is definitely not a ghetto and is a nice area, but it is not "way better" than the NASA area. Both areas have their very nice neighborhoods and some not as nice neighborhoods.

I think this post just shows how you have a below-average intelligence and lack people skills to work out a situation without yelling. You pretty much lost all chance at that point.

You could go to another Fry's, you could try 4 clerks until someone wasnt paying close enough attention to the misspelling and accepted it, lots of outs. Just think rationally and listen to the advice given to you

I am a lawyer - should I call myself in these situations? ;)

There is a something weird about this story. I do not doubt the OP, it just seems to be missing something. Like, I don't get the ID thing (I shop at Fry's all the time and never have to show my ID unless I am using a CC).

In any event, there were/are a couple things that could have been/can be done:

1. Let them call the cops. If you were shoplifting, that would be one thing. But, the moment the cops showed up and you CALMLY told them the story, the manager would look like an idiot and the cops probably would ahve helped you get your money. Actually, I doubt the manager really would have called the cops in this situation.

2. Leave and return (possibly to a different store) and try for your refund again.

As for Fry's policies: It is clear from reading about Fry's online that every policy that Fry's has in palce is to prevent insider fraud. Everything has to be checked and double-checked and every transaction is assumed to be an employee trying to help his buddy steal something until every T has been crossed and every I has been dotted. Anything out of the ordinary sends the employees (especially the managers) in to a panic and they shut down. That is what appears to have happened to you. Rather than dealing with the situation, the manager decided it would be safer for him to shut down the situation and do nothing.

Because of their policies, Fry's can be a very frustrating place to shop, but if you go in with the right knowledge (never by a previously-returned item. Do not buy an item that has a lot a returns (white stickers) on the shelf) and attitude (this is going to suck if things go wrong, but I am getting a great price on this), you can be a happy customer.

BTW, does anyone else remember when the return section had different lines for different types of goods? You could be standing in a 10-person line (usually computers or electronics) yet there were two other totally empty lines that you could not use so the employees just sat there while you waited. At least now they use the one feeder line - much better.

He didn't buy a stickered item. He tried to return a brand new one without having opened the package. That is the simplest return scenario possible, and they borked it. Please read the OP.

I had a bad rebate experience with Frys. Now I always use a CC and don't buy anything that requires a rebate. I still use them because of their selection, but am much much more careful about it. Plus I have learned which of the 4 Frys in my area has the best customer service.

You misread my comments. I read the OP, responded to it and added additional general comments regarding Fry's. My additional comments were not directed to OP's problem but to other Fry's-related comments.

Agreed. Take it back to a diff store, or same store @ a different time and just use it as cash.

I have been shoping at Fry's for over ten years and returned more then a few items in that time. I have never had one bad experience.

Once, I purchased a copy of OS X 10.3, I meant to install it right way but ended up not opening it for about 5 weeks. When I did open it I discovered that there were no CDs in the box (it appeared new and still sealed when I opened it). I went to the return counter and explained the situation. The first person I talked to kicked it up to a manager, after explaining the situation to the manager, he exchanged my box with a new copy. I thought for sure that I was going to be SOL.

I don't doubt what happened to you. But you can find horror stories from every retail establishment. It is hardly a reason the catagorize the store as "the last place anyone would ever shop."

Fry's certainly has its problems. The advice you get from their employees is usually terrible and you have to be careful about buying products that have been returned (although I have done so without issue). However, they also have a lot of stuff other retailers don't carry and they have a great return policy.

I begin telling the manager very loudly, loud enough for everyone in the immediate area to hear, that essentially they are stealing from me.

Sounds to me like you lost your temper. IMHO, this is always a big mistake regardless of how you are being treated. Remaining cool and calm, but very persistent, always works better.

Writing to corporate is a good idea. Make sure the letter is registered/certified so you can prove they got it. You also have small claims court as an option.

-KeithP

(P.S. before you even suggest, I do not work at/never have worked at Fry's. I have worked for the same printing company for the last 14 years).

Yep. Best Buy - guy gets arrested for using $2 bills, another guy buys a 19" LCD only to take it home and see he has a box of bricks.

out of curiosity, who's this CS supervisor you know? just wanted to know, because last time i returned a product, this really gorgeous lady took my return - and she said she was one of the only people who had been there since the webster location originally opened. grew up and went to high school in that area.

anyhow, i think you mean 59 and beltway 8, not 59 and 610

Yes I do mean 59 at beltway 8, sorry it was early in the morning :p
And the girl I know doesn't work at the webster store anymore, and she was a CS sup at the Sugarland location and a different one.

hrmm, I've had great experiences with Frys ... I didn't read through the whole thread but in the past, you should still be able to use the green paper even if your name was misspelled. Last time, they put my roommate's name instead of mine and they said it wasn't an issue, I went to the front and used it without any hassles.

Maybe it's that particular Frys? Have you tried another one? If you want, send it to me and I'll see if I can buy something with it, return it and send you the money back :)

Yea, because all Fry's location are gonna do the same thing huh? What happened to the OP is rather unfortunate, but thats an issue with the customer service at that one location. Several of us have no qualms at the Fry's we shop at, as a matter of fact some of us take "advantage" of their return policy. He simply should have just brought it to another location and get his money back.
