I think everybody should be fair game for ridicule. I don't care if you are famous, political, religious icon, everyday person, etc you should be able to be ridiculed.

Why is it that the only religious icon that creates violence when the icon is ridiculed is Mohammed? Don't get me wrong, all religious groups have extremeists, and all religious groups have people who create violence over their religious icon. Islam seems unique in so far as it is the only religion that creates riots due to cartoons anytime their icon is depicted. To me, that is where the issue lies. All religious icons have been in cartoons, satire, and been made fun of. Islam is no different.

I can respect that the religion does not have images of it's icon, and believe that they have the right to choose to not depict their icon. That said, not everybody is Islamic and if you have issues with some person/group/show/network/forum/whatever because they depict your icon you choose not to have images of then you should not watch that show.

South Park has had every single religious icon on it in the past. They make fun of Christian icons (God, Jesus) semi-regularly. The other icons have been depicted as well. Grow the eff up, and deal with it. It's one thing if the people who create these cartoons/pictures/satire/etc *only* depict Mohammed, but they don't. They depict all religions. Get over the irrational belief that your religion should be sacred while others aren't.

Ridicule is done to point out an issue with something, and in the case of Islam recently, has been satire and comedy based ridicule. Guess what, South Park and others do not solely target Islam (at least the wide spread stuff like SP and newspapers political type cartoons) and instead find anything they can make humor out of. That's their job, to entertain people. Yeah, it might be disrespectful to some people/groups, but they dish it out to all groups and don't just target one person/group/belief.

Now, personally, I won't go around drawing pictures of Mohammed on "Draw Mohammed Day", because I find that to be in poor taste. I also think that forcing South Park (and others) to censor their content because it offends some people is equally in poor taste.

Everything you do is a potential religious offense to someone. If this is how the message gets conveyed to Muslims that non-Muslims won't be threatened by their delusional and archaic beliefs, so be it.

Just to chime in on the depiction point, I personally find it freaking hilarious when south park depicts Moses as a dreidle...and I'm a Jew.
 
It's not because people want to piss off muslims, it's because muslims seem to think they're special and that they can't be poked fun at. There are distasteful depictions of Jesus EVERYWHERE. Why not the other prophets?

Can I start a "let's all draw pictures of Jesus being teabagged by Satan?" You'd get your ass kicked if you walked into any church with an image of that.

But it makes it ok if I do it to a Muslim on a bulletin board? Even though they'd get just as offended by that as a Christian would with a similar image. Just because you don't understand it, doesn't mean you can be a prick about it.
 
The only reason its a big deal is because Muslims are making it a big deal.
If this were "draw pictures of Jesus being teabagged by Satan day" nobody would hear about because christians have learned to shrug it off to avoid any more.

I'm not saying that Muslims can't get mad about it; they rightfully should. It's just that they need to know that they're not allowed to kill people over trivial insults to their beliefs and person, just like everyone else. It's called growing a thick skin. I know a lot of christians and none of them would beat up someone for insulting Jesus - they would rather make the person look like an idiot in an argument or just shrug it off. Others should do the same, or protest.
 
It's funny that all these Muslims are nowhere to be found when it comes to protesting throwing acid on a girl's face, or suicide bombs, etc., but a few drawings and all of a sudden it's RAAAAAAAAAAAGE!

The effect was coined "the streissand effect". Basically due to the nature of the internet, an organization or set of people or even just one person trying to suppress something oftentimes ends up making it a way bigger deal than it would have started out being.

I find it amazing that so many of islam's sympathizers are so ill-informed about the issue that they think islam is a race. The fervor with which they argue in its favor is all the more amazing, given how little they know about what they're discussing.
 
ooh, the main Draw Mohammed page is down as well.. I noticed all of the "Anti Draw Mohammed" pages are still up though.. Looks like Facebook caved in.
