So yesterday I was at the gym listening to Pandora and a song I'd never heard before comes on. Somewhere in the first couple of minutes I realized that I was actively restraining myself from busting out the air guitar in front of everyone in the gym. I looked to see what it was and it was "Ghost of Perdition" by Opeth. I immediately purchased the song, changed the station to play Opeth-like tunes, and continued working out. A few so-so songs later something so smooth a harmonious came on I nearly forgot where I was while listening to it. Thinking it had to be some random band thrown in by Pandora, I looked again. It was "Face of Melinda" by Opeth. Instapurchase. Finished workout.

Today "Harlequinn Forest" comes on and I'm obliged to buy yet another Opeth song. Now I'm fully sold on Opeth, but it seems that they have a massive catalog of music. I'd like to hear some more tunes on the level of the three I already have but there are so many.

Atot, I beseech thee. Tell this poor latecomer what other opeth songs to download next.

I like the cleaner stuff better. Michael Akerfeldt has a very very awesome voice when he isn't growling.

I listened to them NIGHT and DAY.

Now I'm bit sick of it, couldn't get into their last 2 albums. But their oldies are great (blackwater, deliverance, damnation, ghost reveries).

I suppose you get sick of anything after long enough. I'm excited that I've found anything I like that I haven't heard before, and they have a huge body of music for me to work my way through. I think I'm going to start with the four you mentioned.

Also, linky no work, but I get it.

Some hand picked songs fans love:

Bleak (just amazing)
Deliverance (what got me into Opeth)
HARLEQUIN FOREST!!! (I would play this over and over trying to learn it on my guitar)
so many to mention......

They also have so many AMAZING instrumental tracks that are mellow, melancholy, and just trippy. This is what makes them Opeth. If you 'get' their Damnation album, you are truly understanding their intent.

Opeth is by far my favorite band. They're basically all I listen to these days besides Radiohead and a few other bands. I love metal, and Mikael Akerfeldt (lead guy that basically writes all the music, plays guitar, vocals, etc.) is an incredible musician through and through. He has an incredible feel for the guitar (very soulful, IMO), great vocals, and he simply writes great music. From a pure musical standpoint, I think they are one of the great bands of our time.

Honestly, they have a large selection of music, but it's ALL worth listening to. I'm actually in love with their latest album, "Heritage", even though it isn't metal! It's very similar to 70s prog rock/metal while still being distinctly Opeth. It's so exciting and fresh, and Opeth still nailed it despite the very different sound! A lot of people hate on it because it isn't metal, but they're missing the point. Opeth isn't about metal. It's about the music, no matter the genre. Those are the people that don't really "get" Opeth, or those that underestimate Akerfeldt as a musician with abilities outside of metal. (Of course, I'm exaggerating when I say people who don't like "Heritage" don't get Opeth. Everyone is entitled to their opinion, but a lot of the opinions I hear about "Heritage" are ENTIRELY missing the point.)

I'm going to quit talking now. Opeth gives me huge boners, and I could probably go on and on about how much I love them.

Thanks to OP, I'm listening to them now. I haven't listened to them since I got utterly sick of it 2 yrs ago on my 2GB iPod Shuffle only having all of their albums.

I'm a huge Opeth fan as well. It's funny how much I didn't like them until it really just "clicked", then I realized how good they are. Obviously the band is a bit dark, but Akerfeldt's lyrics absolutely poetic, while the band as a whole is extremely talented. IMO, one of the best acts of our generation; it's unfortunate that so many people discount a band like Opeth because of the genre.

Yeah, Opeth are one of the many jewels of the metal world... Shame Mikael said they wont be doing metal anymore starting from Heritage, and I didnt really like that album, even though I generally enjoy prog rock, I just didnt like their approach... Damnation is much better

They have a really unique sound, so its hard to recommend more bands like them, but two that come to mind are Ikuinen Kaamos and Be'lakor, both stellar and so unknown they make Opeth look like superstars

Just google their myspace and listen to whatever songs are there, guaranteed to like them

If you have a spare hour sit down and listen to My Arms Your Hearse from start to finish. Don't do anything else while listening. It helps if you have good heaphones or a nice sound system.

He didn't say that. He said that the tour following it wouldn't be metal - and it wasn't. The tour they are on now, with Mastodon, will be right back to their roots.

I think they're done with the super heavy stuff from earlier albums, but IMO, the new stuff has kept me interested. Akerfeldt is so versatile, he really could go into any genre and keep my approval.

On a side note, Akerfeldt and Steven Wilson (of Porcupine Tree) has an album scheduled to come out this next month. It's supposed to be a nice blend of the two styles, which I'm super excited about.

Opeth is not great. They're terribly overrated.

Opeth is to extreme metal as Blink 182 is to punk.

Having never listened to them before, I went to Youtube, and I gotta say that they have promise...some of the instrumentals are great...but they're ruined by the growling "singing".

Listening to Face of Melinda and it's pretty good, but many of their others are just vulgar in the growling and would be better if the lyrics were as melodic as the music.

I prefer my metal to be the other way round...give me loud, screaming, fast guitar with well-sung lyrics. I guess I just prefer speed metal.
