My problem with them is that they're just so "inoffensive" for lack of a better word. Everything in their music is just so "clean" sounding that it completely lacks emotion.

I can see why they appeal to a large number of people (in the same way Justin Bieber and Lady Gaga do) but they're like babby's first extreme metal band.

The entire Ghost Reveries album is a concept about a man that kills his mother. The changes between clean and death vocals serve to show moments of "clarity" and moments of "madness" inside of the protagonist. I particularly love Reverie/Harlequin Forest because of the feeling of panic as he runs from the dogs hunting for him in a dark forest.

But whatever. You can't get through to some people. The fact that you would even put Opeth into the same ballpark as Justin Bieber/Lady Gaga just shows how ill-informed you actually are.

It's not my opinion that Opeth is the lowest common denominator of extreme metal, it's fact. This thread is proof of it, a bunch of people that "hate screaming" (are not extreme metal fans) or don't otherwise listen to much metal but like Opeth.

You're talking about something no one cares about. Doesn't matter if it's a lighter version of one genre or a heavier version of another. There are some Opeth songs that are as heavy as any metal I've ever heard. Others are as soft and melodic as anything else out there. Opeth obviously doesn't give a shit about fitting in your genre of choice, and I don't care what genre they are. I hear music I like. I listen to it.

Let's just all agree to disagree and remember that Dream Theater is the best band in the history of music.

Definitely angry neckbeard and emo music. I listened to 10-15 seconds of it on youtube. Typical guy growling into mic with heavy vocal processing and the standard highly processed guitar strums and drum beatdowns.

Now for something better.

I have never been a fan of black sabbath. It's dull, plodding rock with no dynamics. Everything is the same throughout every song. Same volume level. Same tempo. Same vocal style. It's boring as hell.

Are you just upset no one likes the shitty music you listen to?

You're applying a description to the wrong continent. Now, if we were talking about some band from the States, yea you'd be right. To the best of my knowledge they don't use vocal processing in Opeth. For a contrast listen to Bloodbath, same guy.

I could never understand why people get so up in arms about other people's music tastes. It's fucking music people! It's meant to be enjoyed not debated.

Also, Opeth is the shit.

I can see why they appeal to a large number of people (in the same way Justin Bieber and Lady Gaga do) but they're like babby's first extreme metal band.

The ending of "When" is incredibly emotional. The guitar melody in combination with the vocals is fantastic. I personally prefer the live version of it from The Roundhouse Tapes.

There's also a part in "Serenity Painted Death" where the main character of the Still Life concept witnesses his lover get her throat slit in front of him while the murderer is basically grinning at him. The music that accompanies this just fits so well, as if it really gives you a sense of this man's rage and anguish. Still Life as a whole is a very emotional album.

Not sure what other music you listen to, but most other things generally sound uninspired and lifeless compared to Opeth.

Not to mention, but Akerfeldt has a wonderful feel for the guitar. He might not be the most technically talented, but musically...oh boy. I've had several friends who are very skilled at guitar do a double take when they heard Akerfeldt play (having never heard Opeth before). Akerfeldt has an incredible feel for his music, and it shows in his playing.

Opeth is by far one of the more unique "metal" bands I've heard. I know of no band that sounds like them. Sure, they have similarities to bands like Dream Theater and Between the Buried and Me, but they still have their own sound. Not counting Watershed and Heritage, their music is extremely romantic compared to other metal. It reminds me heavily of Beethoven's work, to be honest (one of my favorite composers...loved playing his pieces on piano). Their works take on almost every emotional aspect of music you can touch on, in some way or another.

When you factor in that the same band created albums like Watershed and Heritage, it really shows off Akerfeldt's musical abilities. Only great bands can make such a strong change to their sound and still power on without slowing down or getting any worse. Hell, I think Heritage is one of their best albums yet.

Of course, I'm probably wasting my time since you called Opeth an extreme metal band. I have no problems if you don't like Opeth, but your rants only make you look more like a typical hater that hasn't actually given them an honest chance. I'm assuming that's a fair assumption given that you can't even properly classify the band's genre correctly...
