Watershed is a badass album so far. Not hard at all, but dark and melodic with virtually all clean vocals. There aren't many bands out there with this kind of range.

I don't think I ever gave Watershed a fair shake. I need to listen to it again all the way through.

If you're digging Opeth and want to get in to some more metal I'd give In Flames a shot if you haven't already. I'm pretty sure it's considered Melodic Death Metal. Pretty close to Opeth imo. I'm sure someone is gonna drill me for comparing the two but whatever.

Their first three albums(The Jester Race, Whoracle, and Colony) are by far the best.

Discover Trivium next.

Trivium's "Shogun" is an excellent album. In Flames' "Come Clarity" is a great place to start, too.

I guess that I learned to love Akerfeldt's growl because it seemed to fit the content of the music. It's all really dark, heavy stuff, and his growl really give an "evil" feeling to a lot the music.

If you like Opeth, check out Katatonia. "Last Fair Deal Gone Down" and "The Great Cold Distance" are good albums to start with. No growling at all. The sound's actually darker/doomier than Opeth, but not quite as heavy.

And not to completely derail the thread, but if you truly like the instrumentals, you may like progressive rock. Check out Riverside; they're my favorite band, and one of the most talented currently still together.

Opeth is not great. They're terribly overrated.

Opeth is to extreme metal as Blink 182 is to punk.

A thousand times this. I've been into all types of metal all my life, and I've never understood why they get the praise that they do. I love all different types of metal/death metal -- progressive, technical, djent, extreme, melodic -- but Blowpeth just doesn't do anything for me. To say their songs are boring is an insult to boring things.

Opeth (and their fans) are the Tool (and Tool fans) of metal. Boring songs, boring live show, and fans who are so terribly closed minded towards anything else. I've tried to like Opeth too. My girlfriend likes them, and several of my best friends like them -- so I've heard plenty, but everything I've heard just makes me yawn. I understand that everybody has their own tastes, and preferences, but for some reason I find Opeth to sound painfully generic, so I've always been surprised by the following they have.

Please don't.

If you're going to listen to bands that want to sound like the Swedish melo death bands of the 90s, why not just listen to the Swedish melo death bands?

As far In Flames: You're doing your self a disservice if you listen to anything of theirs after Clayman. Anything prior to that was wonderful, anything newer and you might as well stick your head in a food processor.

You have incredibly bad taste if you can honestly say that Opeth is boring.

Agreed. Skip Trivium altogether. Start your Swedish metal playlist with At The Gates, Dark Tranquillity, and Arch Enemy.

I generally despise growling, but love Opeth. Mikael is just so good at it.

They opened for Opeth last year, and I listened to a couple of albums before the concert so I wasn't a total noob at the concert. The music was fine in small doses, very similar to Opeth's mellow songs, but halfway through their set I was bored. Their music is way too monotonous for me.

Riverside is truly great, and I've pimped them about as much as Opeth on this forum. ADHD is brilliant, as is Second Life Syndrome. Mariusz Duda's side projects are worth a listen as well.

I agree that Katatonia's music is a lot less interesting, but it is good ...

That said, "Brave Murder Day" is a fvcking AWESOME album, partly because it's got Akerfeldt doing the vocals :)

And I agree with you about riverside ... they are amazing ...

And I am one of the odd ones. In the 90s I was VERY much into Morningrise. I was very much into death metal and black metal.

Now, I still am very much into Morningrise, but I love everything Opeth's produced, and I think the Heritage album is amazing! I guess I'm just a fanboy, hah.

I can listen to anything Opeth produces, so I am probably a fanboy as well, and that's nothing to be ashamed of. As for Heritage, it is a great album, but if you're expecting any signature growling then you will be disappointed.

It's funny, I like Heritage a lot more now than when I first listened to it. I was REALLY disappointed at first.

I agree with Katatonia's live set being boring - I saw it last year too. The album is a lot better (partly because you can actually hear the singer and lead guitar)

Way ahead of you on Mariuz Duda's side-projects. Lunatic Soul is great chill music for drinking alone :)

One last band I have to bring up for you metal/progressive guys is Protest the Hero. They are so absolutely brutal and technical, it's amazing. The fact that they're all in their early 20's is crazy too.

Katatonia is one of the bands that keeps coming up on my Opeth pandora station that I seem to consistently thumbsup.

There's another band that doesn't show up as often, but seems to have songs that I like better on average, but I can't remember the name. It's a two word name, possibly joined into one word...darksomething or deathsomething, damn that's annoying. :p

Dark Tranquility?

If not, it should be on this list:

Agree 100%.

Now back to the Opeth circle jerk D:

My problem with them is that they're just so "inoffensive" for lack of a better word. Everything in their music is just so "clean" sounding that it completely lacks emotion.

I can see why they appeal to a large number of people (in the same way Justin Bieber and Lady Gaga do) but they're like babby's first extreme metal band.

Clean sounding and emotion are not mutually exclusive.
