I had both a 240Z and a 280Z. The 240 was the FAR superior car. As the model progressed it got bigger, heavier, slower and more softly sprung. Part of it was stricter emission standards that robbed all cars of horsepower, but a lot of it was Datsun's marketing plan. The Z evolved from a cheap, no frills fun to drive sportscar to a bloated image car for the gold-chain and leisure suit disco crowd. The 240 was better than the 260, the 260 was better than the 280 and the 280 was lightyears better than the pathetic 280ZX. The original 300ZX was better than the 280ZX (hell, a Yugo was as good as the 280ZX) but it was still wayyyyyyy too big, wayyyyyy too heavy and too softly sprung to be anything other than a toy for poseurs, it was all image and no substance. The 2nd 300ZX that came out in '90 or '91 was a really good car, but by that time it was as expensive as the 'Vette and was nowhere near the cars lean and mean roots.
