They're not reliable, not all that fast by todays standards, don't handle well by todays standards and IMHO are among the ugliest Ferrari's ever made. If you're looking for a $40,000 toy get a Vette that's a couple of years old. It'll smoke the Ferrari in every performance category, look good while doing it and be far cheaper to maintain.

That may all be true, however it depends what your goal/purpose of the car is. I've seen a ton of corvettes around, I see VERY few Ferraris. If you want to turn heads and make people say, "wow, what was that, a ferrari?" then this will work. Do you really think 90% of the population (not too mention 99% of the female population) really care about how fast a car is? It's all in the looks and the uniqueness of it.

The 308's are known to be dogs, they're not going to impress anyone that really knows cars. If you want to turn heads, there are better vehicles to do it. Put a top quality Cobra replica next to a 308 and nobody is going to notice the 308 unless it's on fire. And since the Cobra can be done with a Vette bottom end and almost any engine on earth, not only will it get more attention than the 308, it'll outrun it too.

Anyone that needs to use a car to get laid might as well just admit that they're a loser. Besides, you can get more chicks with a Harley than with a bad Ferrari.

I wouldn't do it. Those cars are so ultra expensive to repair and they need constant maintenance to keep them in good running order.

I know a guy who almost bought a Ferrari 512 Boxer (V12 engine) a few years ago but he passed on the car because it needed a valve job. A valve job on that car would have cost him $15,000!!! The car had less than 20k miles on it.

Try the 240.

Didn't the 280 have more balls and look much nicer? I realize that the 240 started it all, but the 280 is my pick.

I pwned a 1986 Nissan 300ZX NT that served me very well until I drove it off a cliff. :Q

They don't seem to make cars like that anymore. To this day I have not experienced a car that gave me that feeling. I can't really describe it. Tight handling, loud engine, amazing engine response. Oh, and the T-roof. :)

Well...

I'm by no means a Z expert, but.. the 280 weighed about 500lbs more than the 240, and depending on which year.. some iterations actually had less factory HP, due to emissions...

IIRC, the '79 280Z sported a meager 135HP. I think the 240Z had 160?

Probably one of those Pontiac Fieros with a conversion kit. ;)

(I know...I'm just trying to help talk him out of it)

I had both a 240Z and a 280Z. The 240 was the FAR superior car. As the model progressed it got bigger, heavier, slower and more softly sprung. Part of it was stricter emission standards that robbed all cars of horsepower, but a lot of it was Datsun's marketing plan. The Z evolved from a cheap, no frills fun to drive sportscar to a bloated image car for the gold-chain and leisure suit disco crowd. The 240 was better than the 260, the 260 was better than the 280 and the 280 was lightyears better than the pathetic 280ZX. The original 300ZX was better than the 280ZX (hell, a Yugo was as good as the 280ZX) but it was still wayyyyyyy too big, wayyyyyy too heavy and too softly sprung to be anything other than a toy for poseurs, it was all image and no substance. The 2nd 300ZX that came out in '90 or '91 was a really good car, but by that time it was as expensive as the 'Vette and was nowhere near the cars lean and mean roots.
