Not if Blu-Ray players don't come down to this price. This pricing will get average people (who aren't interested in consoles) to buy.

They would be eligible for the 5-free HD DVD movie mail-in deal
How does this work? Anyone have a link to the list of titles?

If I can get this player and Planet Earth for $100, I'm in!
Doesn't include Planet Earth.

Here is the 5 free HD DVD deal.

It's a pretty restrictive list, but for $0, it's hard to complain too much about it.

Well, ads from Wal-Mart started airing today, promoting both the Toshiba HD-A2 and the Acer $348 laptop, and Wal-Mart a day or two ago released a press blurb saying that they will be pre-empting Black Friday with early sales like this.

EDIT:

Beat me too it. Saw this on CNBC this morning.

oh sweet, my liteon DVD player just kicked the bucket. It did a fantastic job of upconverting to 1080i.

And you think 1080i = 1080P?! I've read [endlessly] that 1080i is visually the equivalent of 720P. That's quite fine, and -should- satisfy me as my 1080P set's only 42" -- I chose 1080P just for its use as a PC-monitor. I'd never doubted the A2 was compatible at the 1080i level, if that's all you were advising of.

This couldn't be farther from the truth. Are you sure you weren't reading about broadcast TV? HD movies are completely different. They are only 24fps. Broadcast TV is 60fps. HD movies look just as good at 1080i on a 1080 set as they do at 1080p.

yup, same

I can't believe that price. I may have to go pick one up for my Dad.

The player is a nice deal, but they are limited stock at every walmart, the one i work at has about 30 in stock. The best deals you are going to see is the Wii and X-boxes, these folks are going to be great deals. I can't confirm pricing, but I can tell you they have lots of each in stock because they expect to sell them. They are going to be exclusive bundles, or just plained marked down to sell fast. My guess is the wiis are marked down and X-boxes coming with nice swank package. :D Check your walmart, they will have displays set up with them inside soon.

I'd be a little more interested on the deal if it was the model with the 2 in the box movies, but definitely not bad for someone who's been wanting one.

Also don't forget all the stories going around at the beginning of the year on how Walmart had signed a deal with a manufacture in China to produce a bunch of HDDVD sets so the could price them at $100 for the holidays. With these price drops looks like there isn't much chance of that not happening anymore for all the doubters.

Man this looks to good to pass up, guess I will be at Wally World first thing in the morning. Still a little confused on the whole 720p 1080i thing. Will this player work as intended with my TV (32in LCD 720P,1080,no HDMI input)?

so, I have less than 22 hours to make a choice:

Toshiba A2 for $100 with 5 free DVD's
OR
Toshiba A3 for $170 with 7 free DVD's including '300' and 'bourne supremacy' (this is a sears BF special, so will have to wait 21 days)

i'm not sure how to make a decision here..

Get the A2. There is no real benefit of having the A3 over the A2. Are the 2 extra movies plus a slimmer chassis really worth $70 to you?

Limit one $98 player per person. I think that's fair. (Some people have called their local Wal-Mart's to confirm.)

8 am, limit one per person.

Some stores don't have any, but it seems the stores that did get them got quite a few. ie. 18-50 units or whatever.

Are you guys anticipating a BF line for these? I mean, do you think showing up at noon will still snag me one of these?

Yea but I bet there will be a lot of hidden A2's in wal-marts today. They are already on display so there is nothing stopping someone from hiding one behind a oil box, paint, clothes, etc...

Called my local supercenter and they confirmed that they will have it tommorow. Guess I'll be there early.
