Old timers, where are you going once this site goes?

Based on the site performance it won't last through the month

That's what started me wondering. A tech site that doesn't provide sufficient resources? That doesn't seem like a way to gain or maintain a base, but it will do the opposite and drive people away.

The "why" is completely unknown as I'm not in any loop, assuming there even one, so no one should think that this is anything other than my own musings.

I came to AT in 1998 because I was into computers, and gravitated my way into Hot Deals and then OT. Now I'm not into computers anymore, nor have I been for a long time. I'm interested in cars and motorcycles, so I've been active in those forums for a long time and gravitated towards their OT sections as well. I'd miss AT, but I wouldn't die without it.

And now you know why people form suicide pacts.

I think of ATOT as th sort of thing that you don't want to show your friends. :sneaky:

Sure, you've had that enthralling zit on your ass since you were 15. But while you wouldn't show it to your friends, it's still yours, always there with you through thick and thin.

I'm more or less just a glorified lurker these days - I don't have a whole lot of time to post here anymore like I once did. I'd probably not miss it a whole lot.

The OP brings up a good point, but I doubt the AT forums are going anywhere soon. Prior to joining the forums I was a lurker for a good while, and it seems like the amount of activity and the content really hasn't changed too much. And something tells me Anand isn't worried about the cost of the bandwidth needed to run the forums.

That said, I used to post a ton over a patent law forum. i gave it up after a couple thousand posts though. I was getting nothing but grief out of it, even though I found it fun to answer questions about my profession. If the AT forums went away I imagine I would feel much the same way as I did when I left that other forum. A bit sad . . . but only until I found somewhere else to post.

I would miss quite a few folks on this board though. Rudeguy, Rubycon, Sjwaste, Dirigible, Corporate Thug, Ned, Drpizza etc. . . I've enjoyed a lot of their posts, even if we disagree from time to time.

that is a real good question!
While my wife travelled to Poland last year and I had to travel on to Israel this site saved my life.....literally.....I do not know what I would have done if I had to find other ways to occupy my time --- other than Yahoo hearts and Quakelive...this site is a just amazing!!

I really have never had another forum I've bonded with, and I don't know that I would if this place ceased to exist. It would feel like a loss but I doubt I would try to replace it.

Agreed.

I am on a couple Ducati forums but you might see one or two posts there per day during the winter months and I have less than 500 posts on them despite being a member there since 2008. This place is the only place I keep coming back to.

I'll miss you all... well, most of you anyway. 😛

I'm curious by what metrics. Alexa website stats indicate a fairly stable site with the forums driving around 50% of the traffic.

I'm not really an old timer in the posting sense, lurked for years before posting, but would be very sad to see this place go.
