Old timers, where are you going once this site goes?

Some of us have been here for well more than a decade, but it's rather naive to think this will last forever. With a private site there's no guarantee the owner won't decide it's time to pull the plug some day. Who could blame someone deciding not be tied to something for a lifetime?

Assuming that time comes, we'll lose touch with each other, as tenuous as that contact is.

What would you do if one day you found the site was gone? Where would you head?

I really have never had another forum I've bonded with, and I don't know that I would if this place ceased to exist. It would feel like a loss but I doubt I would try to replace it.

Hmm I lost my original boards and ended up here. I hear 4chan is nice this time of year.

Honestly I find myself gravitating away as I've gotten older. Maybe I'm just too lazy to post my own content or maybe its because the majority of posters here are twenty somethings and I'm now a 30 something. For whatever reason I post and browse here a lot less. Reddit has lately become more entertaining for me. Seems like its happening and changing a lot faster than OT these days.

I used to be able to sit here and refresh the first page and see new posts every couple of minutes. Funny stuff like parody threads, TFP posts, Spaceman, Alky's latest brag thread etc. Lately its kinda meh. I guess the mods efforts to clean up OT and make it more respectable are working but that is a double edged sword. Take the spicy out of the chili and all you got is hamburger helper.

a decade...how the time fly's

to be honest id on't hang out here as much as i used to. that's not saying much since i still spend far to much time here. lol

but i been hanging out at a few other sites. while it would be sad it went away i would find another site to waste my time with or something else. shrug.

i would hate to lose out on some people are doing. does shorty ever get laid? does anyone find out if the plane takes off? what happend to the spider? and many more.

these need to be resolved

Don't worry, I'm still here ^_^

I know plenty other tech forums that were booming about 10 years ago that have all but turned into ghost towns. It seems that Anandtech and Tom's Hardware is all that's left now.

I might start facebooking. Oh god.
And now you know why people form suicide pacts.

I'm new here and I'd rather be positive.... bring more friends and keep the site alive!
I think of ATOT as the sort of thing that you don't want to show your friends. :sneaky:

Sure, you've had that enthralling zit on your ass since you were 15. But while you wouldn't show it to your friends, it's still yours, always there with you through thick and thin.

I originally came here to solve my computer problems and for advice on hardware/software.
And good advice there was to be had.
Family always ask how I know so much about computers and I answer the forums.
Then suggest they try it for themselves instead of bugging me all the time.

But falling into the off topic and P&N section was like getting dirty or something.
Like having a nice job, then one day you find yourself stealing paper clips and bad mouthing the boss for no good reason.
Anandtech isn't Facebook and was never meant to be.
We the users made it that way.
Bad on us.

Now, it's off to P&N to bitch about the commie republicans. See u there.

By the time ATOT goes away I'll be of the proper age to write letters to the editor and post comments of local news stories.

actually a poll not too long ago showed the average/median age to be around 30. I think a lot of us joined the site at around the same time and age and stuck around all this time. this place probably doesn't even have that much appeal anymore to the new generation that grew up with cellphones/tablets/consoles that rivaled the high-end machines that we had.

anyway, as for the original question, if this place goes down i'm sure somebody will start something new and many of us will flock there.

Never gave it a whole lot of though I suppose. AT has always been here over the years. I enjoy searching my own username and rolling back through the archives. Kinda like a timecapsule for me. Would be a shame if we ever lost it. Pretty sure the sun would still rise in the east and set in the west though so I'm sure I'd move on as well.

There is probably not another site I would ever keep coming back to for 14 some odd years, but it was good while it lasted. 🙂

It sure has changed lots over the years, but in a lot of ways the more it has changed the more it has stayed the same. Probably what keeps me coming back.
