Actually it was largely Prussian mercenaries that taught the American militias how to match the British on the fields of 18th century combat.Without the inspiration and youthful confidence of this young Frenchman many say General Washington would have given up against such great odds.
That being said, most recognize that the French played a role in helping us win our Independence from England...although to be fair, the only reason the French helped us was to essentially exact revenge on the British for territories lost in the Americas during the French and Indian Wars.
Also, modern day France receives ridicule largely because they devoted so many resources to buiding the impenetrable Maginot Line, only to have the Nazis flank their defensive positions and take Paris in a matter of days...that, and the French essentially welcomed their Nazi overlords with open arms.
Or it could just be that Americans find French culture amusing...the same as I am sure the French find American culture amusing.
