I was walking around best buy once and i heard the computer salesman saying the celeron was a good processor...the family bought the 1000 computer..i almost cried

i saw some cheap HP machines on sale with Athlon XP 3200s in them for really low price. Im afraid of VIA, so i wanted to make sure it had nforce2. I searched the box, but found no mention of the chipset, so i asked the office depot computer sales person and asked him, "excuse me sir, what kind of chipset does the HP have?". He looked at it for about 1 minute like he was really thinking and trying to make like he had confidence to make himself intellegent so he can make a sale, then he said, "it doesnt have a chipset". At that point i told him to have a good day and i ran away

back in 2000, my parents went to some stupid comp. store and the guy told them that a 600mhz p3 with 64mb Ram was a great computer and that it was popular. It was a Daewoo qrium. what the fcvk is a daewoo qrium. my parents bought it for 1200.

BB sales rep was selling this DVDROM to this family. the family asks him it the drive will allow them to record DVDs as well, he replies with a "of course it can". i felt obligated to step in at that point.

LOL. I miss the "good old days", in the late-80s/very-early-90s, when the kids working at RatShack were actually real computer/tech geeks, and knew their stuff. This is before RS started selling cell phones, and non-store-branded computers, and used to actually stock electronics parts, mind you.

For someone looking to surf the web and do email, the celeron is not a bad choice for budget-minded folks.

Newegg sells stuff illegally because they sell stuff made in Taiwan that wasn't meant for sale in the united states. Thats why you should stick to ordering from me and my supplier. Although its more expensive, you'll be getting legal goods.

Here's another, a long time ago. (I didn't overhear this one. This is the actual first buying experience of a later friend):

The sucker bought it.

Also a some years ago, prior to the multimedia wave, when I was looking for a scanner, a sales person took the insecure questions about "RAM-memory" and insistance upon "serious use, not games" from an elderly man, as an invitation to steer him away from a cheap, basic PC. Perfect for serious use:
"that is just for games...",
towards the other end of the shelf, you guessed it - hi power gaming PCs:
"...for more serious use you need to consider size of ram and hd...".

I'm a coward in situations like that. At least I used to be. I'm a mouse. I hope I speak up and say something next time.

I've heard that at Best Buy and when I worked at Office Depot. After the OD sales guy left for a second, I snuck over and told them he was full of it.

They went with the mid-range system and I got a good referal to my boss.

Actually, someone posted here once a situation like that. It was for a HD, if I remember, and the manufactuer would not cover its warrenty because it was not for sale in the US.

I used to work at Best Buy here in Windsor, and being quite the computer enthusiast myself, it can sometimes be very difficult to relay the pros and cons of computers (basically all the numbers 512 this and 7200 that) to people who just stare blankly and not understand a thing. I tried to find out what people really want in a system - I told people that Intel graphics were garbage, celerons are for wussies and the GF4 FX5600 256MB @ $349.99 is NOT IN ANY WAY better than the 9800 Pro 128MB on sale for $299.99 (but it's got more RAM, man!).

It pains me but yes, I have sold celerons to people, but mostly only those who just wanted a cheap computer for themselves to check email with. I found also that people are almost always entirely sold on Intels - customers that wanted a good mid range or gaming computer often went directly to the Intels and snubbed completely at AMDs - which is sad, but that is just how it goes; Intel is marketed much more aggresively than AMD.

You have to remember that the customer is always right...I had a lady come in and ask for some memory. I asked if she meant a hard drive or RAM (it is often something mixed up quite often by the common folk). She said she needed RAM...so I brought her to the RAM displays. She then asked if we had 'Maxtor' RAM...I said "no, maxtor makes hard drives, not RAM" , and she countered by saying "no, no, I am certain that it was 'Maxtor' RAM". She was quite sure of herself, so I told her that we didn't have any, and I sent her on her way.

All in all, though - let's face it if you know a lot about computers, you're most likely not going to be shopping for one at Best Buy.

"You see Intel chips have HyperThreading. That makes Windows think you have Dual Processors, and dual processors are recommended for Half-Life 2."

I don't know what happened to you, but I was approached by the Best Buy manager and asked to verify what I had done and had said to the customer.

I was asked to leave the store and if I did it again, they would press charges. (for what I haven't a clue)

I left the store. I have returned to buy games and stay away from their new system sales.

The garbage that people have to swallow. People who think like this shouldn't even have a computer....

I once had a BB salesmen try to peddle a 2.6Ghz celeron with extreme graphics off on me. Get this...it was $2,256!!! I never shopped at BB again. I figured if they were that stupid in the comp department, they would try and get me to buy crap whatever section I was in.

i usually get stuff like hdd and cd/dvd drives in store cause they r cheaper with rebates and sales. cant beat some of those prices, even online.
