I guess I need to spell this out for YOU.....

Subscribers give money directly to anandtech. Non-subscribers pay anandtech's bill also. No one would put ads on the site if there were not any non-subscribers. By putting these ads on the left, Anandtech is going to run off non-subscribers.

On top of that, why should I be forced to subscribe?? The ads make the forum nasty to use. I am not going to pay anandtech because they forced me into that situation. I don't need or want any of the subscriber features. I can deal with looking at ads when they don't interfere with the forum. I don't feel a need to pay for something because anandtech did something stupid.

I think it's more of a matter of principles, and you seem to be missing that.

you expect 100,000 people to subscribe? they will all just leave, and the people who subscribed will have a whole lot of people to talk too. all 800 of them.

I'll ignore the idiotic logic, but where do you have to pay $2.50 for a cup of coffee? I pay $.99

The only major problem is once you get down below the adspace, there's just blank page being wasted (and no the solution isn't more ads :)).

There comes a time when people with limited capabilities have to be left behind and forced to upgrade, otherwise we'd still have games written for 1MB video cards. It took forever for many sites to optimize even for 1024x768. If AT wants to put a relatively small ad-bar on the left, and you're stuck at a low resolution so that it's annoying, either upgrade or stop using the site. If you went to a NEW forum and saw something like that, would you start complaining about it there?
Do you know what you just suggested???? :Q . . . repeating and flashing ads ALL the way down the page so space isn't "wasted" . . . :p

I guess there will be a LOT more subscribers. :)

I understand the need for ads especially for website like Anandtech, but this placement is just....wrong.

Technical question - Using IE 5 or higher . . . is there a way to make your own "pop-up" to automatically cover a certain location all the time?

(not thinking of using it here . . . but curious) :Q

There's a couple personalities fighting here. Those that will just bend over and take it in the hind quarters and those with principles. To subscribe to Anandtech they would need to offer me something I would like or some benefit for doing it. Trying to annoy me until I subscribe just backfires and motivates me against it.

Now, I'm a subscriber, so I don't have to look at this, but I took a look anyhow just to see what the problem was. Dwell is 100% on the dot: it makes the site look bad, and hard to use. People read left-to-right in the English language, so that ad banner is right where they want to start reading, and it gets in the way. Now, I'm not going to bother preeching, even you know it's not right, so I'm simply going to ask you this: do something about it. That ad banner does nothing good for the site, so please don't make the non-subscribers have to deal with something so awful.

AT isn't like that - they DO listen to their membership . . . if you read the WHOLE thread you'd see they are looking for "solutions".

Suggest something positive. :p

;)

LOL some of you guys are pathetic. I don't pay for AT, and don't plan to. If this becomes that much of an annoyance for me, i'll leave and devote my time elsewhere... but i certainly won't be whining of something that is free isn't good enough.

Principles? If you get all riled up over something that costs $2.50 a month, then perhaps you should re-evaluate your 'principles.'

I like the way the ad stops and leaves all the white space all the way down the page. Very nice, I love it.

Just pathetic guys.

Well I've suggested in other threads that any side but the left would be better.

Well, I could be wrong but my guess would be that left placement is intended to "get in your way"...?

The human mind is a marvelous thing, and I truly believe with a little practice everyone on here subjected to the ads will soon hardly notice them a bit. I find the yahoo groups advertising MUCH more irritating.

ok, for $2.50 a month you can pay the state not to write you a ticket for something you did not do. it is only $2.50 and I should reevaluate my principals right?

The little things are what define us. if I compromise my principals because it is "only" 2.50, what does that show about me? that I can be bought.

I have fought over 25 cents before with my bank. it was just 25 cents, and I probably spent a month getting that 25 cents back into my account. but guess what, it is in my account now.

I'd like to see the ad's placed anywhere but the side... hell I'd be willing to settle for doubling the number of ad's and adding a popup for every page over placing the ad bar on the side.
It looks terrible and is irritating as hell.
