BigBongWongFooey for 3L1T3 H4X0R status. Your script works very well.

NOTE: For Phoenix browser the path to put it in is:

X:\Documents and Settings\[your username]\Application Data\PHOENIX\Profiles\default\XXXXXXXX.XXX\chrome

and now, no adds.

On the downside I've got Mozilla back on my PC. I wonder if that's what AT is up to, trying to get us to stop using IE based broswers. ;)

I have no problems with ads for non-subscribers but on the left handside or even right handside is just not kosher.

Eh? Glad you're paying to support stuff like this?
Actually the ads are paying to support stuff like that.

The ads pay to support ads being put on the left side of the page? Or the ads pay to support subscribers paying to subscribe? I don't understand what you're trying to say.

Somewhere in preferences you can point it to a user defined stylesheet I believe, save the css I posted and point IE to that file, it probably won't work 100% how it should, but it may be enough to get rid of the ads.

The ads generated income support placement of the advertisements. Not the money generated by subscribers.

Actually, it's pretty common. Certain locations will get you more pay, and certain sites will only take certain locations.. and i guess some sites, like googles, won't take certain locations.

It's not REALLY that horrendous (as far as appearance). It does result in a lot of "wasted" space, but if they want the ads there, that's fine (though on the right would be better, and as long as they don't blink).

The only major problem is once you get down below the adspace, there's just blank page being wasted (and no the solution isn't more ads :)).

There comes a time when people with limited capabilities have to be left behind and forced to upgrade, otherwise we'd still have games written for 1MB video cards. It took forever for many sites to optimize even for 1024x768. If AT wants to put a relatively small ad-bar on the left, and you're stuck at a low resolution so that it's annoying, either upgrade or stop using the site. If you went to a NEW forum and saw something like that, would you start complaining about it there?

moralpanic: That's not quite the same as dictating where an ad goes. If AT had a certain layout and didn't want to screw it up, and an advertiser says they don't want their ads in any of the available spaces, the site is free to say they aren't going to host any ads then. I just don't think the blame can be placed on Google for wanting their ads to go in a certain area (although I don't understand WHY they would insist on it not going at the bottom, if they could pay less for that space, or why AT accepts them saying to put it elsewhere unless they're paying more for the ad space now).

Stuff like this is what kept me from re-newing my subscription.

Wow this looks incredibly unprofessional. Any side would be better than the left even though the right side would still suck almost as bad. They're even locking threads on this on the OT forum. Most likely because that forum gets a ton more traffic than this one. They're trying to lower the bad publicity. Anyway if this was supposed to make me subscribe then it has only motivated me not to. I'd feel like a fool giving in to this.

AT has a real big problem.

Lets go over some history shall we? About 2 years ago, the subscription system was started. When it was started a ton of new features were promised. 1000 PM limit, chat rooms, speed, a Fusetalk upgrade, and other features. What did we get? 1000 PM's and more speed. Where did the other stuff go? we were promised it. I paid my $30 to get it. I got sh!t. Thank you very much.

I let my subscription expire after that year because I got into a tiff with how the site was being run my the Mods. The Mods improved 100 fold in the way they dealt with people in the last few months. Subscribers were again told of new features that were coming down the pipes such as that chat room thingie again, and a fusetalk upgrade. ( because of this, I was all set to subscribe this weekend because I will finaly get my tax $ back, and will have $30 to spend.) Well, 6 months later where are we? we got the Fusetalk upgrade (that IMHO should NOT have been done until the 50 bugs that are everywhere were worked out, but I am nobody so who cares.) but the other stuff is nowhere to be found.

Again, I was lied to. Thank God I did not pay any money this time. I would hate to sue AT for false advertizing.

Now, on top of it, you are gonna waste whatever I pay in subscription fees to put the most obtrousive banners on the damn page as possible? Everyone who does not subscribe will leave and go somewhere else, and AT will be a wasteland. You may as well put up some fvcking popups. I was not planning on paying $30 so I could talk to myself and the few other subscribers.

Don't get me wrong, I love it here on AT. but sh!t like this makes me want to leave. I told myself over and over that I would rather fix AT than leave. well, I don't see how I can fix this without driving my ass down to where the servers are and bribing someone to let me mess with the coding.

What AT needs to do in my eyes (in priority):

#1. Get rid of those fvcking ads.
#2. Stop lying, bending the truth or whatever you call it. if you are not sure if something is going to happen, don't say anything.
#3. Stop pissing off everyone by pulling stunts like this. it makes it look like AT only cares about the bottom dollar (which it does) there is this thing called "tact".

Thank you.
Dave Elderkin
(Misses the older and better AT)

I highly doubt the threads are being locked to "lower the bad publicity." The layout and complaints are a forum issue, hence they should be dealt with in Forum Issues.

Well my $350 LCD won't support over 1024x768. I wish it did but it doesn't. I don't think my technologies is ready to be left behind.

If Anandtech keeps this then I will go to Arstechnica.

And I know people will say, "Don't let the door hit ya on the way out".

Well if enough people leave then it won't matter how many ads are throw on all sides of the forum. So many people say subscribe but if there weren't people that didn't subscribe then there would be no reason for AT to even have any ads. The non-subscribes bring in ad money to anandtech because no one puts ads in places where people aren't around to see.

You're entitled to your own opinion. The rest of my post still stands.

Same with my laptop. Of course on the plus side now I'll have more study time ;).

I'm sensing another mass exodus if this crap stays. Coupon codes I could somewhat understand, but this new "geocities-tech" is plain awful.

Cant really compare graphics cards to monitors. Not everyone has deskspace for a 21" CRT.

Well I have dealt with most changes without a problem. They didn't affect my way of interacting with people. This sh*t screws up posting and reading the forum. I won't be sticking around if the ads stay placed on the left side.

Wow, talk about whining. Subscribe if you don't like the banner ads. It's only $2.50 a month... the cost of a cup of coffee.

i have to go with the "put it at the top then" option. left side is traditionally for navigation, it's very disconcerting to have ads there.
