LOL some of you guys are pathetic. I don't pay for AT, and don't plan to. If this becomes that much of an annoyance for me, i'll leave and devote my time elsewhere... but i certainly won't be whining of something that is free isn't good enough.

Principles? If you get all riled up over something that costs $2.50 a month, then perhaps you should re-evaluate your 'principles.'

ok, for $2.50 a month you can pay the state not to write you a ticket for something you did not do. it is only $2.50 and I should reevaluate my principals right?

The little things are what define us. if I compromise my principals because it is "only" 2.50, what does that show about me? that I can be bought.

I have fought over 25 cents before with my bank. it was just 25 cents, and I probably spent a month getting that 25 cents back into my account. but guess what, it is in my account now.

LOL but this is a FREE site. Nobody is forcing you to sign up $2.50 a month, unlike the example you used of the state. Obviously some of you guys have no idea how much servers and bandwidth cost. They're just trying to keep the free site up.

If your principles are so high, then PAY and keep this site alive. $2.50 is pocket change for you, but in large enough numbers for them, that's something. Support a site you frequent often.

I'll admit, those god awful ads on the left side made me subscribe. Well, I had been thinking about it quite a bit recently, and this just cemented my decision.

But seriously, they should be moved to the right side if possible. It's not only annoying, but it's bad web design to have all that white space on the left, especially considering the size of the ads.

I don't think anyone is asking Anand to remove the ad, just move it to the right of the web page. What's the problem with that?

You just don't get it. Our principles are why we won't pay that $2.50. Not all of us just bend over when faced with an erect p*nis. Meaning I disagree with their tactics and I will not submit to a hind quarters intrusion. I'll not subscribe and just bitch whenever the opportunity arises or the ads will get moved to a different side and that will be the end of that. If I subscribe it will be beacuse members are offered something I find useful or because I want to support the site. This AT strategy is counter productive.

Thank you very much, BBWF. Works well. :)

Hmm which principle would be better... whining about something that is already free... or actually SUPPORTING something you like?

yeah.. i hate the view on the sides.. i messed the look of everything because it pushes all the content to the right.. its really bad when you scroll down adn there is just white space on the left..

I dont mind ads but please find a way to better integrate them.

Moralpanic,

This site is free but guess what?? Anandtech makes money off our loyalty. AT makes money because we like the site. If everyone gets feed up with this design it will lead to less money for AT.

Personally, I could care less about the ads. I just think the placement is stupid...it makes the site look unprofessional. If the site looks unprofessional, less new members may stick around. Think about it from a first-time visitor's perspective...first impressions do count, and style can be as important as substance. Less new members sticking around = less revenue. It just doesn't make sense from a design standpoint. I would REALLY like to know what Zuni thinks about the placement, but I highly doubt we'll hear a peep from him on this issue.

You should really take a look at how much money they really make from it... you'd be surprise that it's a lot less than you think, and not something i would consider a profitable business. Maybe 2 years ago when banner ads were worth 5-10x as much as they are today it may have been profitable, but i'd bet they're just barely covering the free forum site with the banner ads.

Like i said, if your principles are so high, then just subscribe. Not only will you be making AT more money, but you'll have a faster site, more benefits... and no ads.

You're all hiding behind the word 'principle' because you're too cheap. There's no principle in whining about something that's already free. But there is principle in supporting something that you don't have to support.

Well, I could be wrong but my guess would be that left placement is intended to "get in your way"...?

I'm sure that's the case too, I'm just pointing out that for the effectiveness of the ad, it does a good job of destroying the readability of the forums.

I had to log out to see the ads, but I agree that they are a bit much. Why is google being an ass about not allowing their ads at the bottom? Tell them to fvck off. If they don't want the hits, then don't give it to them.

I guess Google now owns Anandtech and has the right to tell them where to place their ads. Now that's power.

Tell me it ain't so Joe, tell me it ain't so!:(
