I can't believe people even expected that to charge off of a USB 2.0 port. It's a 10" monitor attached to a phone for cryin' out loud; that's just a bit much for the 2.5W maximum of USB. USB was meant to connect devices, not charge them.

I at least expected it to charge with the screen off and in standby...it seems a bit lazy to disable it altogether. It would have also been nice if they could have provided a wire with both USB and power, right now I have to use a the 30 dollar dock connected to the power brick just to charge it, and another spare cable from my iPhone to sync it...cause the dock doesn't include the cable. And an apple cable is ridiculously short, so I also need an extension cord to reach the outlet and still keep the damn cable on a desk. Since you cant use usb connected to a laptop or desktop (none of mine at least), I have no idea how they expect anyone to be able to charge it anywhere but on the floor next to an outlet with what's provided in the box. It's absolutely ridiculous.

It's all a bit baffling considering how well its designed otherwise...hopefully a firmware update will at least enable charging with the screen off.

I'm going to sell my X200T to get the iPad and build a desktop rig. You can't do everything and not enough with the proprietary power optimization software bundled with it. All these system tray/ background programs are universally written across Windows OSes, whereas the iPad pushes developers to write efficient specialized apps/software.

If I want to watch a movie or show, I'll do so with a large LCD/Desktop on a comfy piece of furniture at home. The iPad is not going to replace anything but will supplement the raw computer power of my desktop at home.

iPad will be great to browse the internet, type *quick notess*, VNC, manage files, torrents, stream, etc. from your desktop.

1.5lbs @ 10hrs battery (7-8 hours realistically?) > netbook / laptop @ 3lbs.

So... what happens when you want to sync and charge??

Realistically, it's over 10 hours. I've been using it all day...At least 7-8 hours surfing/ using apps and its only down to 29%. I haven't charged it for more than 5 mins, so this is still the out of the box charge, which started at 90ish percent.

I am using it at relatively low screen brightness so that probably helps a bit, but its plenty bright at this setting...anything higher than 30% combined with the ambient light sensor is too much.

Whatever complaints anyone has about the iPad, the battery life is spectacular.

Charge it then sync it. It has a 25Whr battery, so it's not as if it's at risk of running out of juice during a sync.

And on top of that, there's a lot less reason to sync in the first place, unlike a smartphone. But I'm hardly going to make excuses for it. I can manage to work around it, but its not as simple and easy to charge and sync as I thought it'd be. I already paid $30 extra for a fancy stand, they could have at least threw a second cable in the box and added a power port alongside the dock connector.

You honestly don't really need a pc to do anything with it that you can't do on the device itself, but you also need to register it through itunes before you can even use it at all, so you do actually need a pc to get up and running.

So the photos of people who purchased and used their iPads at the Apple Store today had to use a computer to register before using??? No out of the box use? wow

All I know is that the first thing that greeted me when I turned on the ipad in my car was a connect to itunes screen...not sure why its necessary since its all otherwise self contained, but that's the case. Small annoyance in the end, but baffling.

Or they could just wait til next week when all of the unsold stock that's sitting pretty much everywhere outside of LA gets redistributed to the mecca of Jobs knob slobbing.

PS, I never called anyone an idiot in my post but thanks for trying.

**EDIT**
Guess they could have just gone to San Fran too since it is closer than TN:

So much for it being a TN regional thing.

You too can take it down a notch.
