No way am I going to preorder it. I'd rather get a used HP touch screen laptop or something that does more than apple touch apps. And I also think I'd probably break the screen after a couple of weeks, so the Ipad is a no-go for me.

Also it reminds me of girls periods.

So you're clumsy, and prefer inferior products? Sounds to me like you don't deserve to own an iPad, or any Apple product for that matter.

This isn't OT. Leave the childish insults there or go home.

just curious, but why?

at least for myself, I'm drawing a blank as to the niche it would fill that isn't already filled by my iphone + netbook + kindle (each one filling their own roles better than I imagine the ipad to fill it)

lol. Looks like you have absolutely no idea what niche the iPad was created to fill.

Does it have an IR port? I'm interested about it taking over home theatre control duties from my Logitech Harmony 880 remote.

http://www.apple.com/ipad/specs/

Doesn't look like it'll do IR natively. hat's too bad.

Further investigation indicates that Apple is planning to release Apple Remote for the iPad. Have to get an AppleTV thingy to use it, though. Boo.

It doesn't look like any of these tablets that people have been posting in this thread have an IR port :(. The Slate is a little shrouded in mystery, so that might end up having one, but I haven't seen anything saying it does.

The only thing I'd worry about going to a full blown W7 setup with the Slate is boot-up time. The thing would have to be on almost all the time and how long would it last? Although, it isn't exactly foreign of me to program for the Windows operating system, so if the software I wanted wasn't available, I could just write it myself :D.

EDIT:

I could technically write software for the Android OS or iPhone OS as well, but the latter requires me to buy a Mac and spend $100 for the SDK :/.

LOL honestly I don't hate it because it's apple. I hate it because it's literally the exact same tech that was release 3 years ago with a bigger screen. Seeing the screenshots that Anand posted of the innards, it seems quite literally like they took the iphone hardware and tacked on a 10". And they get to charge a decent amount for it. I wish I were as smart as those marketing guys. They can take a turd, polish it and sell it as gourmet steak :(.

cheap and easy criticism that is without thought or accuracy. shameful for a geek.
how much are the archos9 and the atom based joojoo pad? oh yea...those cost the same as the ipad and prove what you are saying is total bullsh*t. they have the pc hardware but run like slow unresponsive sh*t, and are so unimpressive that they will sell almost no units.

no pc manufacturer has a tablet that is responsive and fast as this

The iPad: not as portable as my smartphone, not as powerful as my laptop and not as functional as my netbook. But I could look super cool in Starbucks!

How can anyone be truly productive with it? If you need to type anything longer than a sentence you need to buy a keyboard. Want to hook it up to a tv? Oh you have to purchase another expensive add-on which will still be crappy resolution. Want to hook up an SD card to it? Need to buy another accessory. NO USB PORTS AT ALL. Yea how awesome and innovative. No drag and drop file management. You’ll be downloading content from the web and through the iTunes content store directly from the device, of course, but what about that set of files you just brought home from work or that collection of videos you want to pull out from an old backup drive? In order to get them over to the iPad, you'd have to first dump them into iTunes, then perform a sync operation instead of being able to simply drag and drop them over Wi-Fi or simply hook them in via USB Mass Storage (a great standard that’s been around forever!). There are third-party iPhone apps that allow file transfer via Wi-Fi, but how many steps are we needlessly adding to a process that was uncomplicated by USB Mass Storage years ago? Also very innovative cus it's Apple. No camera really??? A $300 laptop has that. No widescreen resolution which Apple has been touting for years as the next big thing. Having to convert 1080p content to be able to play on the device. Hey I'm not the one saying this is an all in one device to replace the other computers in my house. You guys are. I didn't even mention multitasking and no flash either. Damn this thing just sounds so innovative.

it multitasks enough, it just show more than one thing on the screen at once, its not like an mp3 is going to stall out your browser:p
you are missing the point, it doesn't replace your laptop.

all the same poorly thought out criticisms again. no wide screen? yea a cramped wide screen is HORRIBLE for that form factor, too narrow or too short for use esp once you bring up a keyboard. apples not stupid enough to sacrifice everything for a niche feature.

camera? for what? web conferencing where you share and view your friends nose hairs and boogers?

go buy a windows tablet:p Thats what came out last time folks like you were put in charge of design. and those worked out sooo well:p

I'm not the one who's saying it's a revolutionary device. It lacks features that make it harder to be productive. Sure it can surf the web well but that's about it since there's certain web features still missing.

lol. Hilarious. All that typing you did for nothing. It's funny how everyone foolishly tries to compare the iPad with laptops and inferior tablet PCs. All of your complaints are minor issues at best. The iPad is innovative, because it was designed by the best, Apple. Only Apple products receive the attention they do because they are a fusion of beautiful design and engineered functionality. If HP, or Dell released a similar product, it would immediately be compared to and iPad, and dismissed as a lame knockoff just as quickly. Everyone knows this.

It has the features it needs for its use. pretending its supposed to competing against the feature sets of the tested and proven sh*tty windows tablets and generating all your criticism from that comparison is simply wrong headed on its face. that design philosophy of do everything poorly has had its day, and it fell on its face. time to move on.
its a consumption device that can be used at a snap for a set of tasks and entertainment and has the insane battery life to be convenient. its not a netbook, or a laptop.
and if you are too poor to justify one, thats fine.. but not a good reason to pour on the hate.

Wow so you took my criticism of it's hardware as a bash against apple? I literally just said that the hardware isn't innovative. The polished turd joke is generally true imho. to be honest it's more of a complement. They have a great marketing and design team. Kudos to them.

When your criticism flies in the face of reality yes, i'd have to say it was based on pure bias or hate. If there were 200 dollar windows tablets that flew like wind you would have a point, but the market has PROVEN your assertions about the ipad to be wrong. if the ipad is a rip off why do the joojoo and archos cost just as much, and run like sh*t. when you are claiming that a device that costs the same, runs faster, has double or triple the battery life of its competitors and is lighter, as inferior or a turd, you aren't dealing with reality are you? you are comparing it to some fantasy device that doesn't exist to claim its a rip off. that doesn't fly.
