AMD's stock price is getting pretty low. I'm thinking I might buy about 1000 shares here soon. I'm thinking it will bottom at around $7.25 or so. Then sell some if it hits $9 or so and then maybe the rest when it hits $104 per share :laugh:

Anyone else in for a few shares?
 
$4.41B if you buy it tomorrow. You can pick up Intel too if you have a spare $150.38B.

EDIT: Oh you asked how many shares... my bad... currently there are ~554M shares of AMD out there and 5.85B shares of Intel.

I don't think AMD needs a teat to suck on just yet. As for "supporting" them, just don't go out of your way to avoid their products. I see Intel recommendations all the time even when an AMD chip would suffice. For instance, many times (around here and elsewhere) people would ask for part suggestions for really budget, non-overclocked systems. Invariably most people say stuff like "get this Intel chip because you can overclock it higher and it is faster." I didn't know that they stopped teaching reading comprehension in school these days. 😀isgust; Anyways, if a system incorporating an E6550 isn't in the budget and overclocking isn't a requirement, then AMD chips are certainly capable enough. Thus, in those situations let's just start suggesting AMD chips. That is helping without hurting, and without losing too much competition in the industry.
 
I will recommend AMD when it is better or equal to Intel, not before. Until recently, I always recommended AMD builds, not anymore...

as you buy the stock up for the takeover, the price will go up.

you won't get it for its current stock value.

But it is equal or better to Intel... when you are comparing based on similar price-points under $160 and with no overclocking. Even better when taking into account (average) cheaper AM2 motherboard pricing.

So, are you still recommending Intel to someone who only has $100 to spend on a motherboard/CPU combo and will not be overclocking?
 
Yeah, price point is exactly why someone would still buy AMD. I would only recommend Intel to someone who wanted to spend more money. For the everyday basic user, AMD is really the smarter way to go as they should be more interested in bang for buck rather than best performance. However, due to marketing, alot of non-educated consumers in for a basic system will think they have to get an Intel or they might have "problems" or it won't be fast enough or something. And of course, due to our culture's completely materialistic brainlessness, people (basic users) think they need to get the biggest and the baddest. However, that is simply not true.

Now, if I were getting a new system and didn't worry about a budget at all, of course i would get Intel 😛

My main rig was due for an upgrade after 2 years on an overclocked A64 x2 3800+. Went with an overclocked E6750. 😀 $190 was less than the $300 spent two years ago on that AMD chip. Of course at the time that AMD chip was bargain basement for a high performance (at the time) dual core. So, my new CPU cost less than the previous one, the 4GB DDR2 cost less than the 2GB DDR, the IP35-E cost the same as the Asus 939 board... oh yeah, my Raptor X cost more than previous HDD, thus eating up the savings. 😱

V, while quite transparent, I don't really have a problem with. I've never found him to be facetious about where he stands, and you have to hand it to the guy for sticking up for AMD through all their recent troubles.

Sell off at $103 😀

AMD stock is undervalued but who knows where the bottom is?? Latest Q-10 showed $188 million operating loss on the cpu side (if I remember correctly). After bungling the Phenom rollout with the TLB errata it could go either way this quarter.

I don't think it will drop as low as you think - that would put the market cap at around $3.9 bil for a company that may well have $6 bil in revs this year with a 'guarded' outlook for 2008.

And I find it funny that disputing the AMD FUD on this Forum earns me a fanboy label, Phynaz.

Psychologists call that 'projection', Phynaz. I call it your personal bias.

I believe you really can't go wrong with either an AMD or Intel CPU. They are darn close to each other in performance. If someone gave you a Ferrari (AMD) instead of a Lambourginni (Intel) I think you happy as a pig in sh!t.

You can believe all you want, but quad cores are currently an enthusiast product. The 'average user' doesn't need and is hesitant to pay a premium for anything faster than a 2180 or 3800X2.

As a gift, sure, I wouldn't turn down a Phenom. But even at $200 for the 2.2 the $110 X2 5200 looks better on a bang for buck level, and the Q6600 looks worlds better in the overclocker e-peen category.

Other than receiving as a gift there isn't much market for a mainstream low end enthusiast performance part -- the product is a contradiction in terms. Until it's a great bang for buck (read: priced at 150 or so) there are much better alternatives out there.

Let's fix your analogy a bit. You can buy a Ferrari 360 for $150,000 or a Saleen Mustang with a bug which may in rare instances shut down the engine unless you disable 1-2 cylinders for $100,000. Oh, and a stang which works and a faster ferrari will be available in 3 months.

Which would you choose?
 
I wouldnt touch AMD for atleast 2 years. The company needs to get rid of some their dead weight, and Ruiz sadly is one of them. If you're hellbent on buying AMD wait to it drops to 4 - 4 1/2 and buy just 500 shares. buy 1k if it dips below 4
