You can believe all you want, but quad cores are currently an enthusiast product. The 'average user' doesn't need and is hesitant to pay a premium for anything faster than a 2180 or 3800X2.
As a gift, sure, I wouldn't turn down a Phenom. But even at $200 for the 2.2 the $110 X2 5200 looks better on a bang for buck level, and the Q6600 looks worlds better in the overclocker e-peen category.
Other than receiving as a gift there isn't much market for a mainstream low end enthusiast performance part -- the product is a contradiction in terms. Until it's a great bang for buck (read: priced at 150 or so) there are much better alternatives out there.
Let's fix your analogy a bit. You can
buy a Ferrari 360 for $150,000 or a Saleen Mustang with a bug which may in rare instances shut down the engine unless you disable 1-2 cylinders for $100,000. Oh, and a stang which works and a faster ferrari will be available in 3 months.
Which would you choose?
