1-2-2005 Firewood Sales Up As Oil Prices Rise
Seasoned firewood is now selling for roughly $180 to $230 a cord compared to between $140 and $160 a year ago
Ray Colton of Pittsfield, Vt., said his company has sold more than 4,000 cords this season, about 1,000 more than last year: "We're selling as fast as we produce," he said.
A cord is a stack of firewood 4 feet wide, 8 feet long and 4 feet high.
Oil prices are hovering at close to $2 a gallon in Maine, up more than 30 percent from a year ago. At $2.18 a gallon, kerosene is 56 cents more than last year. And propane averages $2.06 a gallon, up 43 cents from a year ago.
Prices are also up out West, including in Colorado, where local hardwood begins at $180 per cord and imported oak costs $300.
"Firewood at $180 a cord is still a deal compared to what it costs to heat your home with oil," he said.
Wood does pollute a lot more!
How many people actually use oil to heat their homes?

mmmhhmmm, all of which will help as oil price gets high enough to economically warrent these new technologies. They will be phased in as oil is depleted and oil costs skyrocket.Originally posted by: charrison

I agree charrison.
the market will adapt as oil becomes more expensive.
as a fuel, oil is dirt cheap.
Tell me please what energy source can substitute oil. I'd just like to hear some suggestions.
coal gasification for one.
shale
biofuels
electricity(via nuclear power)
TDP(waste recycling)
methane hydrates
hydrogen(via nuclear)
Off the top of my head
So much doom and gloom over nothing but adapting to our environment.
All one can do at this point is invest in the only economically viable fuel source (oil and gas), ride the gravy train until it hits these insane values. I've started investing already and i'm a university student![]()

You would think power hungry Americans would want power biodiesel engines.
Just shows that Gas is not high enough and we need to get the price of biodiesel below the price of gas.

Anti-LNG sentiment is absolutely ridiculous. The ultimate in NIMBY-ism. There hasn't been a major LNG explosion in the US since 1944. Luddites win again I guess. LNG is the fuel of the future -- abundant and clean.Originally posted by: OrganizedChaos
yup. i do, the guy across the street from me does, the house behind me does, the new place i'm moving to does, the guy next to me however dosen't. when he built his house he had 2 huge propane tanks installed. up here in the northeast natural gas coverage is spotty at best with many towns being hundreds of years old(mine was established in 1655). also we don't have much for nearby refineries so alot of gas comes from massive LNG tankers that nobody likes. people look at them and say" look at that, its a goddamn floating bomb"

gas shot up here to $2.75 today too. yesterday gas went from like $2.45 to $2.63-$2.69 and it rose again to to $2.75. We are getting closer to $3.00 again. I think those oil speculator were right, By spring time gas will be $3.00 a gallon. If that true, gas this summer will probably reach close to $3.50, then next spring/summer it could push closer to $4.00 a gallon if everything keeps going the way it is.
I think those oil speculators are part of the problem why gas prices, barrel of oil prices are getting out of control.

Any time you have a limited resource dwarfed by the investment pool then its bound to happen. The whole escapades with oil price fluctuations bouncing up and down on the slightest changes of news reminds me of the gold and silver market manipulations. Shame people forget those days so fast.

The energy market is the new dot-com, with the Chicken Littles providing all the momo the speculators need.
