1-2-2005 Firewood Sales Up As Oil Prices Rise

Seasoned firewood is now selling for roughly $180 to $230 a cord compared to between $140 and $160 a year ago

Ray Colton of Pittsfield, Vt., said his company has sold more than 4,000 cords this season, about 1,000 more than last year: "We're selling as fast as we produce," he said.

A cord is a stack of firewood 4 feet wide, 8 feet long and 4 feet high.

Oil prices are hovering at close to $2 a gallon in Maine, up more than 30 percent from a year ago. At $2.18 a gallon, kerosene is 56 cents more than last year. And propane averages $2.06 a gallon, up 43 cents from a year ago.

Prices are also up out West, including in Colorado, where local hardwood begins at $180 per cord and imported oak costs $300.

"Firewood at $180 a cord is still a deal compared to what it costs to heat your home with oil," he said.

Wood does pollute a lot more!

How many people actually use oil to heat their homes?

Alot of people in the northeast.

the market will adapt as oil becomes more expensive.
as a fuel, oil is dirt cheap.

Tell me please what energy source can substitute oil. I'd just like to hear some suggestions.

coal gasification for one.
shale
biofuels
electricity(via nuclear power)
TDP(waste recycling)
methane hydrates
hydrogen(via nuclear)

Off the top of my head
mmmhhmmm, all of which will help as oil price gets high enough to economically warrent these new technologies. They will be phased in as oil is depleted and oil costs skyrocket.
So much doom and gloom over nothing but adapting to our environment.

All one can do at this point is invest in the only economically viable fuel source (oil and gas), ride the gravy train until it hits these insane values. I've started investing already and i'm a university student :)

I see what you're saying but what bothers me is that they take their sweet time implementing new technology. I mean, look at how long it's taken a few cars to become even hybrids. What apparently seems to go on is fear of losing monopoly on existing energy sources.

yup. i do, the guy across the street from me does, the house behind me does, the new place i'm moving to does, the guy next to me however dosen't. when he built his house he had 2 huge propane tanks installed. up here in the northeast natural gas coverage is spotty at best with many towns being hundreds of years old(mine was established in 1655). also we don't have much for nearby refineries so alot of gas comes from massive LNG tankers that nobody likes. people look at them and say" look at that, its a goddamn floating bomb"

You would think power hungry Americans would want power biodiesel engines.

Just shows that Gas is not high enough and we need to get the price of biodiesel below the price of gas.

The reason we dont have more diesels on the road in the US is the EPA. Diesel engines produce too much particulate matter to pass emissions tests. However low sulfer diesel is coming to the US this year and diesels with particulate matter filters are on the horizon.[/quote]

yup its been a chicken and the egg kind of thing. bosch won't make the filters until the the low sulfer fuel is ready and the refiners wouldn't make the fuel until the filters were ready. there was an article in the other months motor magazine about it.

Crude-oil futures climbed above $66 a barrel Tuesday to close at their loftiest level since early February, while gasoline futures ended at a two-month high with traders still fretting about global inventories despite ample U.S. supplies.

...

Crude for May delivery rose as high as $66.20 a barrel on the New York Mercantile Exchange, before closing up $1.91 at $66.07, its loftiest session end since Feb. 6.

...

Gasoline's two-month high

Petroleum products rose in value Tuesday along with crude and gasoline futures climbed to a level they haven't seen since Jan. 31.
April gasoline futures closed up 5.57 cents, or 3.1%, at $1.8845 a gallon, April heating oil added 4.66 cents, or 2.6%, to end at $1.8277 a gallon.

Anti-LNG sentiment is absolutely ridiculous. The ultimate in NIMBY-ism. There hasn't been a major LNG explosion in the US since 1944. Luddites win again I guess. LNG is the fuel of the future -- abundant and clean.

FYI: natural gas is composed primarily of methane, ethane, propane, and butane. It is not even a poison, although a large concentration could cause asphyxiation.

And BTW, do none of you own a calendar?

Oh, it's all about the preparation for summer blends. Although, from what I'm reading, MTBE won't be used this summer so those boutique blends are going to be fewer in number.

I've given up on complaining about energy prices. I have diverted money to energy stocks this week and so far have increased my portfolio by $1100 in 2 days. If you can't beat them, join them.

gas shot up here to $2.75 today too. yesterday gas went from like $2.45 to $2.63-$2.69 and it rose again to to $2.75. We are getting closer to $3.00 again. I think those oil speculator were right, By spring time gas will be $3.00 a gallon. If that true, gas this summer will probably reach close to $3.50, then next spring/summer it could push closer to $4.00 a gallon if everything keeps going the way it is.

I think those oil speculators are part of the problem why gas prices, barrel of oil prices are getting out of control.

Any time you have a limited resource dwarfed by the investment pool then its bound to happen. The whole escapades with oil price fluctuations bouncing up and down on the slightest changes of news reminds me of the gold and silver market manipulations. Shame people forget those days so fast.

The energy market is the new dot-com, with the Chicken Littles providing all the momo the speculators need.

Couldn't agree more.

Oh, and gas topped out at $2.70 per gallon (regular unleaded) today in Lexington, KY.

Oil pushing $68/bbl
http://www.marketwatch.com/News/Story/S...7D&dist=newsfinder&symbol=&siteid=mktw
Crude-oil futures inched toward $68 a barrel Monday morning as investors remained concerned energy production ahead of the hurricane and summer driving seasons despite U.S. crude inventories near seven-year highs.

Traders "will continue to fret over the approaching hurricane and driving seasons," John Kilduff, an analyst at Fimat USA, said in a note to clients Monday.

Crude for May delivery was last trading up 82 cents, or 1.2%, at $67.45 a barrel. It climbed as high as $67.70 for the first time since Feb. 6. Futures prices are nearing the record of $70.85 for a front-month contract, reached on Aug. 30.
Pucker up those sphincters.

4-11-2006 Oil At $69 Per Barrel On Iran Nuclear News

WASHINGTON - Oil prices briefly surpassed $69 a barrel Tuesday, gaining strength from a rally in gasoline futures and declarations from Iran's president that the country had successfully enriched uranium for the first time.

U.S. oil inventories are at a seven-year high.

While crude futures are 27 percent higher than a year ago, they are still below the record levels reached after Hurricane Katrina hit the Gulf Coast last year. On Aug. 30, front-month crude-oil futures traded as high as $70.85, then settled at $69.81.

Well, when they purposely buy gas at the most extreme prices during a glut, rampant gouging is the result. The only benefactors, the investors. Just as I feared, its the whole price manipulation of a uniquely necessary commodity by the large banks all over again. The story is developing rapidly just like the past market scams.
