Haven't the Yanks learned that you can't buy a championship?

Of course you can. They bought a bunch and the Red Sox bought theirs.

How many series were won when the Yankees were the highest payroll in baseball? How many when the Sox were number two? Study the ratio long and hard, then get over the fact that your team lost this year in the first round.

Ohh, so if you're number 2 out of 30, it's not buying a championship, but if you're number 1 it is.

The two players most instrumental in the Sox series wins are Schilling and Beckett, BOTH of whom were salary dumps.

No, obviously you misunderstood what I was saying. I'm saying compare the ratio of how many times the Yankees were the highest to how many times the Sox were number two as in they're equal to each other.

I guess your reading comprehension isn't that great. Maybe that's why you're a Yankee fan, when you got into baseball you didn't look into it past finding out who the "best" team was and cheering for them. :p

Um, I didn't misunderstand anything - I'm just pointing out that the Sox "bought" their championships in the same way the Yankees "bought" theirs.

I was born and raised in NYC, that's why I'm a Yankees fan - but if throwing around ad homs is your method of "argument", so be it :D

And yet you're complaining about two versus how many? The logic doesn't make sense. Either way, we wouldn't be having this discussion if Cleveland didn't choke.

I'm not complaining about anything  I think you have reading comprehension problems :p

I just realized you weren't the guy who made the post saying the BoSox bought their WS.

Deadline has come and gone and looks like Boston is now the frontrunner to land Santana. LOL. I like the remakr made by one anonymous NL executive. "they might be the best team in the history of the frigging universe."

Rumors are that Boston may have a deal done by this evening.
Interesting role reversal now.
Yanks will be underdogs for the first time in a long time.
I like it. :)

Yup...looks like the Red Sox will have Johan in their pen :( They're coming out (way) ahead regardless of which package they give to the Twins.

Ever? Probably not, but they'll be extremely good next year.

Congrats, you get another ace for a song... not quite sure why teams keep bending over for the Sox, but so be it.

Championships absolutely can be bought. Notably the Marlins did it in '97, Diamondbacks in '01, Red Sox. While the Yankees haven't won a World Series in 7 seasons, they've been in the playoffs all 7 seasons and the World Series twice. Bringing on one of the maybe 3 best pitchers in the game much closer to his prime than Randy Johnson, does take you farther in the post season. Dollars spent by idiots don't return squat, look at the Cubs, Mets, or Rangers. Dollars spend wisely do win championships.

Has A-Rod resigned yet? I hope for the sake of all things good with the game, that A-Rod goes to a different team. Why? Because if he does resign for more money, it's absolute solid proof that A-Rod's primary concern is the size of his paycheck, while putting the team in tough situations. Mariners had their best season once A-Rod left (tying a MLB record # of wins in a season!). Rangers sucked with A-Rod, improved once he left. Yankees have not won a World Series with A-Rod.

QFT....Its ALL about how you spend your money. There are teams out there that have money *ahem* Orioles but they dont spend it. But also players have to be willing to play in your town. I live in Baltimore and NO ONE wants to play for them cause the owner sucks.

After the great success the Yankees had in the late 90's, they set the bar so high for themselves that they never had any rebuilding years. When you sign the top free agents, you give up your high draft picks for the following year. And trades for guys like Santana cost several good young talents. Little is being developed from within. The way for the Yankees to turn it around is trade some guys away, drop the payroll to $60-$70m for a few seasons, develop within, then bring in new free agents to fill the gaps. But that will never happen, expectations are too high.

Big thing, when you sign the top free agents, they more often than not are a year or 3 past their prime. Giambi, Johnson, Clemens, Matsui, Damon.

I dont think matsui can be considered a FA, but I do agree with you for the most part.
