Had the biopsy today.

You know, I really don't like going to hospitals or seeing doctors much. I think its mainly to do with having to sit and wait for ever even though you have an appointment for a specific time.

The other reason is, because in my experience, that I tend come out hurting more than when I went in.

For example, this stupid lump...

I ahd no idea it was there 4 months ago. It hasn't changed at all since then, so I think it's safe to assume that I still wouldn't be feeling it today. Not onyl have I felt like I've wasted time getting run around with no new answers, but I've been gagged and poked several times by fingers and tongue depressors, I've had a camera on a hose shoved in my nose and down towards my throat (one of the most uncomfortable feelings ever), and now I've had the biopsy done - which included numbing the area with novocaine (small pinch) and then I had a piece of it removed and had stitches put in. Now, that process wasn't so bad. The numbing was uncomfortable.

Before I went in today, I couldn't tell this thing was there (unless I actively searched for it) and I didn't feel any pain. Now, I feel lots of pain (mainly when I swallow), I can feel the damn thing (mainly the stitches, I guess) and it feels like there's something at the back of my throat that I can't swallow. Sometimes it makes me want to gag.

It'll probably take at least a week for them to get results. I also have to have another cat scan and an MRI done because the original cat scan was worthless, according to this doctor.

So yeah, i'm not very happy atm.

Got the basic results back from the biopsy. It's a benign growth of the salivary gland.

I will be going back to see the doctor on Monday and he should go over it with me in more detail then.

Do they have to remove something like that, or will they just leave it?

Not sure. My guess is that they'll want to remove it anyway. I guess I'll find that out on Monday.

Well good luck with that, I've had my fair share of oral surgery, it's never that fun. After it's all said and done though you'll be plenty relieved.

I don't think your salivary glands affect taste, do they? This is on the soft palate in the top rear section of my mouth. They would remove the growth, not the whole gland anyway.

You have tons of salivary glands all over your mouth. Yours, judging by the way you are describing the location, sounds like it isn't a major salivary gland.

edit: taste buds affect taste, not salivary glands.

The doc is going to remove it. No date on that yet, I should know tomorrow. I'll have to stay over night for observation. My first stay in a hospital for more than like 3 hours. I'm not a big fan of hospitals, as I've mentioned before.

If the biopsy hurt so much, I can't imagine what this is going to feel like.

Once he cuts this out, there will be a hole in my mouth. He's going to patch it with skin from my throat (major ack!) or my cheek (minor ack!).

There's also a chance it could affect my speech and add dort of a lisp or something from the air going through it...

definitely not looking forward to this...

Ouch, sounds like this is bigger than I thought.

Best wishes on speedy and full recovery.

Glad to read it was minor, but hopefully the excision goes smoothly and you're up and 100% soon.

Good luck.

oh, so there won't be a hole, and i'd bet there won't be much of a speech impediment. the tissue graft might be sore for a little while though.

it's really a simple procedure. i hope it goes along just fine for you. don't be too nervous.

It's a venom gland. Soon you'll be able to throw away your can of Mace. :D

Surgery is scheduled for Wednesday, the 26th. I have to go down today and speak with the anesthesiologist.

I'll have to stay overnight for observation. Not sure when I'll be able to return to work. I've wanted some time off, but this isn't exactly how I wanted to go about it.

I started losing my voice on Thursday morning but it was a little better on Friday. It hasn't changed since then though. It's not completely back. I hope this doesn't interfere with the surgery.

Wow, glad to hear it's benign. I've had some recent health concerns too and I know how worrying it can be. I hope everything goes well with the surgery.

Surgery was yesterday and I came home today.

Everything went well. I'm a bit tired and weak and sore. I can't talk very well right now and I have to eat liquid or soft foods, like jello, pudding, etc.

Didn't get a hot young nurse, but the one I did get was very nice and helpful.

Not sure what else to say other than I'm home and everything went well.

If you feel down at all re-read your OP and remember how you felt when you didn't know what it was.

This could have turned out a lot differently.

Count your blessings.

Good luck on a quick recovery.
