Doesn't matter the explanation. The general consensus is that $180 is too high. MS PR can explain it till their blue in the face and it doesn't matter if they are being 100% truthful or 100% BSing.
In addition, anybody who shops around at all realizes that's a pile of horsecrap for an excuse. Looking at Newegg I see 120GB external 2.5" drives for as low as $100. And those are more complicated devices than the MS attachment, they have to have additional PCBs for USB circuitry on board. (I'm assuming that the Xbox drive is just a drive in a fancy plastic case, and and the drive controllers etc. are in the Xbox itself.)
