# H.264 video support: Up to 15 Mbps, Baseline, Main, and High (up to level 4.1) Profiles with 2 channel AAC LC and Main Profiles.
# Added MPEG-4 Part 2 video support: Up to 8 Mbps, Simple Profile with 2 channel AAC LC and Main Profiles.
only 2 channels. I'm caught between excitement and disappointment.
Unfortunately, this does not mean Divx or Xvid can be played on the 360 after the update. Both codecs require MPEG-4 Advanced Simple Profile support, and the press release specifies only Simple Profile.

Who cares how it looks as long as it's functional? It's simply a plug in accessory to make typing easier.
I like it. Blends perfectly and smoothly with the controller. Although, I hope that is just a prototype because isn't it supposed to include a jack so you can use the headset as well?Originally posted by: NFS4

Believe it or not...there will be ANOTHER headset that will come with the keyboard. There's a little jack at the bottom of it.

Damn! That has changed since this morning.Originally posted by: five40
It's only 10Mbps not 15Mbps. In your link it says
Added H.264 video support: Up to 10 Mbps peak, Baseline, Main, and High profiles with 2 channel AAC LC.
Added MPEG-4 Part 2 video support: Up to 5 Mbps peak, Simple Profile with 2 channel AAC LC.

The last "bad news" bit....does that mean the new codecs aren't supported via streaming with the Media Center extender functionality?Originally posted by: Eug Wanker

Finally I gan give more details without getting into trouble.
Good news: h.264 is the same decoder used for HD-DVD. VC-1 is also multi threaded so higher bitrates should now work.
Bad news: h.264 profile support is 4.1 for HD and 5.0 and 5.1 for SD (720x576) content (we run out of memory for HD 5.0+ content). MPEG4 is SP only no ASP seatures are supported (B-Frame, QPEL etc.). Also no subtitle support.
Bad news: container support is MPEG4 and ASF, audio is WMA or AAC LC 2ch only.
Bad news: This updated functionality is for the dash video player only. MCX is a separate product and is completely unrelated to the dash.
Yes that is exactly what it means.Originally posted by: blurredvision

I agree. I never really used MC anyway. So dashboard is just as good.Originally posted by: Queasy

That's not necessarily bad though. As long as the movies are accessible in the dashboard that is still good.
The other two bits of bad new is bad though.
One of the MS guys has since told us that the numbers there aren't hard numbers, more like guidelines. Also, since it is using the HD DVD H.264 code, I'm hoping this means that there is in fact way more headroom than those numbers suggest (since H.264 on HD DVD can be over 20 Mbps).Originally posted by: QueasyYeah, it has. Suddenly, I don't really care. Sure, it might be good for a movie file or two, but I had grand visions in my head of creating a grand media center with all of my DVDs ripped and stored for streaming, but I don't want to do that with wmv. Oh well.Originally posted by: dlock13
