Police Squad.

Most preposterous TV show cancellation in the history of cancellations.

Actually that reason is not at all preposterous, it's spot on true and was true for many other shows as well. The American audience doesn't really WATCH TV. They talk and flip channels and read the paper and eat and do their homework and dozens of other tasks while the TV provides background noise. For a show to be successful it's got to be able to be appreciated even if viewed with one eye in 10 second snippets. If the viewer has to pay attention to get the jokes it won't last. The aforementioned When Things Were Rotten and Arrested Development suffered the same fate. So much was happening in the background and so many jokes depended on noticing other things that had happened earlier in the show that most viewers couldn't follow along.

I also loved Jericho although a fan campaign got them to make a short second season just to finish off the story because it ended on such a cliff hanger.

 It was rushed but it was nice to have some sort of conclusion

I feel like this thread has just become a retrospective of great shows that were cancelled after the first season so...

Terriers. One of the best single-season shows ever. Yes, even better than Firefly. :awe:

I enjoyed Surface for the potential, and for Lake Bell's boobies. It was terrible in execution, though.

And it brings me to another point. I no longer get invested into any form of sci-fi/action/drama serials (Surface, The Event, Last Resort, etc) until they've completed at least an entire season and I can marathon them on Netflix or DVD. So sick of getting my hopes up for something remotely interesting and having it cancelled 5 episodes in.

Other shows cancelled in one season.

Out of Practice written by the same writers who wrote Frasier about a family of mostly M.D.s Had a similar humor style and appealing actors as Frasier. Solid comedy lost in a glut of reality TV shows.

The show just wasn't that great after season 1.

Pushing Daisies

If I've learned anything, really quirky shows do not make it on TV. I think most people just fail to understand the subtle nature of it, which reminds me a lot more of British humor than anything.

Also, if Brian Singer (not Bryan Singer the movie director) is the creator of the show, it will fail. He also had Wonderfalls before Pushing Daisies, which was a good show (also had Lee Pace on it as the main character's brother), but it was that same quirky style. I've also noticed that Chi McBride appears to have the touch of death after he appeared on Pushing Daisies and Human Target and both failed after two seasons. :p

V (new one)

This had the same problem as Reaper... it just fell into mediocrity. It didn't help that... I think season two had such a large delay in the middle of it.

Knight Rider (the second one).

Not sure when they figured out it would end, as they kill the back story before the end of the season.

I think the newer Knight Rider was pretty much doomed from the start. In my opinion, the older one worked out well because it was pretty much an Americanization of James Bond (except Michael Knight wasn't government-sanctioned) complete with the awesomest gadget of them all... the Knight Industries Two Thousand (KITT). The newer version did almost redeem itself when
it pared down the cast by a lot, which I think only left four people: Mike, his girl, the tech girl and the tech guy.

The show did have one great thing about it... Diana Russo is flippin' hot; watch her have puppet sex.

Speaking of car-related shows, do you remember the ill-fated Viper?

They shot a pilot and it wasn't picked up. I forget if they ever actually aired it on tv or if it somehow leaked out onto torrents.

I do remember seeing the pilot and it was truly awful.

The pictures of Adrianne Palicki in the WW costume is what killed that show. It's hard to imagine putting to hot things together could come out so bad. I would watch a bad show for some hot WW cosplay action, but not looking like that.
