It's not that Italy didn't try to attack, you don't have that many shots for defending all the time they had the chances but unfortunately for them never managed to take them (Del Piero, Vieri were far off their best - Inzaghi could have made a difference). Italy are notoriously slow at starting tournaments, psychologically they set out their first game so they don't lose and build on trying to 'improve' every game they play. The Sweden game seems set for allot of debate . Italy clearly dominated the first half, and with a bit more luck and possibly better placed shots could have come out of that half 3 or 4 goals up. The second half started where the first half left off. What ignorant people seem to forget is that the game changed dramatically when Sweden made their round of substitutions. Italy were starting to tire physically and Sweden got a second wind and started to have a go at Italy. For those who say Italy just defended the entire second half, either were just plain blind, or ignorant and gone along with what the press say. I think people who do so, are discrediting the effort Sweden made to get back into the game, they forced the Italians back by attacking thus forcing them to defend. In the end they got the goal that was so crucial to them. I don't see any such derogatory comments about how the same happened to England vs France in the first game, England defended almost the entire half whilst the French attacked them, anyone having a go at England for being too defensive.....? Didn't think so!
For the Denmark - Sweden 2-2. For me it wasn't a fix, there is no way they way the game was played that it had any hint of it. After Sweden equalised, both teams obviously just settled for the draw as they knew that would mean they were both through, but given the little time left that's natural.
For the Totti incident, disgusting? yes, disgraceful? yes. However I think he should have been sent off before with that awful challenge as it was, again I don't see anyone making half the fuss about Alexander Frei spitting at Steven Gerrard. If you are going to tarnish people for one thing and not the other that's just being plain hypocritical.
Italy going out was their own fault same as any other team who do. I think in many cases Italians are picked on just because they are 'Italian' and is unfair. They've had many great players in the past, and many professional players (Maldini being one of the shining examples). If you want to tarnish teams for past and present traits why don't you remember the game fixing between Germany and Poland which was blatantly played out for a draw....after you hans, no after you. Or the failed drug testing in the past of current dutch players.
Oh on a side note, for those who said Italy never win more than 2-0, in 1964 they won 6-0 vs Turkey, they just haven't won more than 2-0 in the current revised Euro championship format, then again there are quite a few teams who share that record with Italy.[/quote]
Thanks for the stats and much of what you say is true. Had Italy been able to think positively against Sweden and not remove two attackers, which noticeably changed the game and put the Italians under far more pressure then they would have won that game and be in the quarter finals. The problem people have with Italy is their constant inability to see the reasons for their own demise, for example blaming their socks or seeking a conspiracy where none is to be found. They have many, many great players who deserve better than this way of thinking which seems to be ingrained. Combine this with their playacting and diving (which seems to be spreading) and you can see why they're disliked.
As for Frei, no-one would dispute he deserves the same as Totti - however he hasn't been labelled 'class' on this forum which prompted the responses against Totti. I don't think anyone has said that Frei shouldn't be punished.
