I suppose he represents a return to Great Power politics and traditional imperialism. Russia gets to take Ukraine, and whatever bits of Europe it wants to grab, the US dominates the Americas and expands its territory in its own sphere (Trump's personal kingdom - probably to become hereditary). What's left of Europe struggles on however it can. China can dominate East/SE Asia, as long as it doesn't come into direct conflict with US/Trump interests. Africa is left entirely to its own devices.

Just not sure if this is merely Trump's idiosyncratic world view or if it represents some larger social change in the US population/politics?

Well it's good that the great power dynamic never led to any major wars between said powers killing 10s of millions in the first half of the last century alone.

*presses finger to earpiece*

Wait I am getting some news...

I just read Trump said unless California agrees to implement Voter ID he won't be sending any money to assist with the wildfires. Between this, and the Greenland thing, just a few days in and he's already well on track with the shitstorm expectations I had for him.

Does he actually have the power to cockblock needed aid if he doesn't get his way? Winning wasn't enough, he gonna take out his anger on any state he lost. What a spectacular human being!

More extortion/quid pro quo ... *sigh* I remember the good ol days when Presidents used to refrain from stuff like this, along with following the constitution and other laws while in office. They were doing that like a week ago I think, if I recall.

Fuck him! ... California should agree to Trump’s terms, take the disaster aid, and then do absolutely nothing about voter ID.

Donald will understand.

Well as long as he has the congress critters to say how hard they will suck, it can happen.

The options are that Rs in congress won't include it in legislation, he could veto it, or he could have OMB illegally impound the money. That last one foreshadows a major fucking problem nobody is really talking about for this year.

The D response should be we will vote for ZERO disaster dollars in any state that Trump won in the EC if they do this.

Yep! ... And this is coming from someone who lives in FL (we are ready financially for any hurricane disaster without gov. assistance) Trump is full of shit when he says the states like FL NC etc don't need Fema "And they (governors) take care of it themselves" There are many down here in FL whom have accepted and received Fema aid (I know 2 of them personally) and wouldn't be able to rebuild without it. He will be fucking over his voters (great!). Time to pull up your bootstraps Floridians and start reserve funding yourselves for disasters! You decide to live/build here you better be prepared mentally and financially to be denied/rely on handouts and vote accordingly for you best interests in the future (laugh!).

Trump talks about McKinley a lot. Denali -> McKinley being one explicit item. Tariffs, overt imperial expansion into the western hemisphere, funding robber barons, etc. Strong echoes.

I won't get into how McKinley's administration went and what movement occurred shortly after, for reasons. JD Vance is no Theodore Roosevelt.

Obviously, Trumps obsession with McKinley has to do with McKinleys tariff policies. When McKinley was president there was no income tax leaving tariff's the greatest method of federal income. Trump never talks about the shortcomings of the tariffs that became evident in McKinley's time and McKinley then began to forge a free-trade consensus that eventually pushed tariffs out of vogue for nearly a century. Until Felon 47. Tariffs are only good if it actually brings back jobs that pay fairly and provide fair benefits and fair cost to consumers. Trump's belief that an economic principle that he thinks was effective 125 years ago is equally as applicable today, is foolish and regressive. The world has changed a little bit since then, and new global powers have emerged.

McKinley built his reputation on protectionist policies but began to see the limits of tariffs near the end of his presidency. He concluded that for US success to continue, it would need a freer flow of goods and reciprocity with global trading partners. The correct path. Something Dum Dum never talks about when he gushes about McKinley. In the 1890s our defense budget was smaller, and federal social programs were nonexistent. And high tariffs hurt consumers. Also, McKinley was bought and paid for by the wealthy of the time. They didn't even try to hide it. Just like now. Tariffs are like sales taxes; they get passed on to consumers. Strategic tariffs are one thing, but broad-based tariffs without strategy like Trump proposes never work.

Trump is an economic illiterate.

News just came out that Trump made an executive order for the Air Force to remove all traces of the Tuskegee Airmen from Air Force training. Because he considers it DEI.

Maybe my knowledge of history is off, but those men definitely weren't hired because they were black. I guess Trump's gonna Trump. Just a week into his presidency too, he's wasting no time in unleashing his wrecking ball. I won't be shocked if he ends up trying to also get the movie made about them erased from existance.

Depends on how you look at it I guess, haha. The Tuskeegee Airmen were absolutely chosen to be pilots there because they were black - it's because black pilots were banned before that time and even while training them they didn't want them to be trained with white people.

So basically they exist because of racism but they are a testament to overcoming racism and THAT is the part Trump doesn't like.

Quite the opposite, they were all stuffed into one squadron because the command structure wanted them separate from the 'real' fighting force. Their capabilities helped propel diversity initiatives forward within the AF, building what we have today.

I am sure Rand Paul and Cromer are teeing up the subpoenas as we speak.
While you jest it is still a pity they can only see a crime if they imagine one and not if one is actually right in front of them.

[Yea yea i know it wasn't a crime they were looking for but a narrative they wanted to establish; the ultimate problem with america is that assholes like these keep getting elected.]

And now Trump's DOJ is firing all the people who worked on criminal cases against him and launching bogus investigation into people who worked on those cases.

Good to see Moscow Mitch giving Trump the finger along with Murkowski and Collins. So close to not having an unqualified person heading up defense.

So who is the next Senator with a chance of defying the MAGAs? I guess this is good that Fetterman voted against Hegseth, so we haven't lost him completely yet.

I think it's also they were credited for military heroism which Trump considers something only worthless losers would aspire to.
