Ordinarily, I would write off generalizations such as these. But when I think about my own matches, I've only lost PvT to the MMM bioball + some support. That support can be either Ghosts or Tanks, and there's very few of these units. Whenever my Terran opponent goes pure mech or BCs, the immobility just allows me to expand all over the map to outmacro him.

That's basically it.
But my strength is in macro anyways. Does not matter if you lose more units in battles as long as you can create more new ones than him (and prevent him expanding).

Theoretically you could counter MMM with temps or colossi but that usually just takes too long to make or you have to little zealots for shielding to block the first push.

you are right, scan is useless or lets say a matter of luck if you scan the right place. Using a reaper to scout is a good idea. But just one and focus on souting not on harassing so it does not get killed.

Your partner took way too long to build a spawning pool. From all the games I've played, you almost have to expect a rush of some sort within the first 3-5 minutes. Sometimes they don't rush you and if so... just go attack them instead! :ninja: Your partner probably could've stopped that rush if he wasn't misusing his first batch of Zerglings on trying to chase down that Probe. If he would've attacked the warping-in Pylon, he would've been able to stop the advance of cannons, and while he'd still have some cannons to deal with, it's a hell of a lot better than them ripping up his base.

Your Terran opponent was silly not to grab the Hellion upgrade given his heavy reliance on them to take out your light units. Dealing double damage to light units... yes plz! 😛

You know, I really miss Photon Cannons. I used to play Protoss in SC, and I loved the versatility of cannons. They made Protoss the one race that could easily guard expansions without having to sacrifice part of your army. As Terran, you can go with a 4/6 person Bunker, but that costs a bit when you add it all up and takes 4-6 resources.

Yea my partner is new and isn't that fast. Most of our games involve me doing early pressure/defense and him helping out late game, we went 5-0 in our placement matches and are now in platinum so it hasn't been too bad. 😀

The Terran opponent was stupid for getting reapers to begin with when I already had a decent amount of marauders and then getting hellions didn't help him much at all.

Sometimes I use them on expansions that are under constant attack but generally my first two expansions will be Orbital Commands. Saved my ass in one of my games yesterday, toss did a DT drop into my base and manged to kill the few turrets I had placed around so I had to lure him around and scan.

Luckily my early pressure had caused him to forget to expand so the entire time he was in my main attacking depots/turrets I had an expansion pumping the entire time. Got rid of the DT's and attacked and he saw the army and gg'd as he couldn't make reinforcements.

My friend who got rushed was zerg, can't really wall off. But yea as a Terran i've never had it done to me successfully.

I've tried it a few times but they mostly scout it and come with air units and destroy it before I remember to build a turret or 2.

Just wanted to vent a little after what happened to me yesterday...
I decided to start solo on my account after amassing about a 200-30 win loss ratio in team games. I figure Ill just cruise to 5-0 and get placed in platinum then work my way up to diamond. So I roll through my first 4 games beating bronze, silver, plat, plat players. Then my fifth game starts up and the guy actually seems to know what he is doing. So he actually kills my scout with lings and then sneaks a quick expo. Unfortunately for him I was quick on the re-scout and moved in about 8 zealots to down the expo while warping in stalker support. He sees my army and moves his 4 roaches back. Then the score screen box pops up. I originally assumed that he left since I was going to take down his expo. Only later do I realize that I was apparently disconnected by battle.net and given a free loss...

So I place in gold... After throwing things for a while and complaining to everyone on my friends list I sit back down and figure "well at least my games will be easy". I had forgotten that you always seem to play people from higher leagues...

So I play my first game. It's vs a diamond Terran. I scout, he blocks, I 4-gate, smash his wall. Game over.

Second game: It's vs diamond Terran again! I scout, he blocks, I 4-gate, fight him up front while dropping 4 zealots on his mineral line, he runs out of minerals. Game over.

Third game: It's vs diamond zerg. Huge map... I scout. He scouts. I build 3 zealots, he doesnt rush... I get antsy. My probe scout is pushing pylons out over the map. So I go to check out his base with my 3 zealots. I go under a rock outcrop, and see him running lings above. Shoot... I run back to base while micro-ing probes. He gets 2 banelings, explodes on the zealots and probes. I fight him out. I have 5 probes left... Game over... Well, it should have been... I block my ramp with 3 zealots. He keeps sending lings and banelings trying to bust it. Meanwhile I just zip out probe after probe... When he settles down I figure he is switching up production. I move out, and scout a little while throwing up an expo. He has an expo up and he is working on mass hydras. I have 4 gate rolling and I throw up a stargate and move towards dark templar. While I run around with stalkers I send 3 DTs to his expo and manage to kill most of the drones before an overseer shows up. I dont currently have the army to beat him and my main ran out of minerals, so I throw up another expo and make void rays out of the stargate. We run around and skirmish in the middle of the map and he accidentally loses his second overseer.

Finally he makes his move. Im fighting a force of about 20 lings, 20 hydra, and 4-5 ultralisks with about 15 stalkers and 12 zealots with 4 dark templar. I also have 3 cannons by the ramp to my base. I meet him outside of my base, run my units to the ramp, while blinking the stalkers up it. Then we clash at the bottom of the ramp. As this is happening i send my 3 void rays to his expo. When the large fight commences I blink my stalkers off the ramp and quickly kill the overseer. They then blink back up into the base after losing 3-4. He rolls through my zealots but cant see the DT's and cant reach the stalkers. Eventually he manages to push into my base with a ling blitz. To counter I warp in a quick 4 zealots and blink back with the stalkers. The Dark templar are destroying the ultralisks... When I finally down his units he looks to his base to rebuild and realizes that his expo is gone and his second one is dying... Cue a few choice phrases about losing to a turtle and he leaves...

So it was a fun night of gaming after that drop... Sadly I'm still in gold league and playing diamond players... Such is life? Sorry for the mountain of text!

I love reading this stuff anyways, because I barely have any time at all to play when I'm at home. I want to try playing some multiplayer games on battle.net (which I haven't done yet), but until things calm down a little, I basically get to read the game recounts/tips/etc here (pretty stringent site blocker at work, but it doesn't catch everything), so keep it comin! This is the extent of my SC2 enjoyment currently.

either he is on his way up or you are on your way down. 😀 The system will match you with people not in your division to see how you do.

So if the bronze player has been stomping bronze and silver players it picked you to play against him to see how he would do and determine if he should be in gold.

it's how the ladder knows when to promote people to the next division.

Or it could have been a player doing placement matches and you were the last match and when it ended he got tossed to bronze as he wasn't good enough to play in gold etc.

You complain of rushing, and then give an example of tier 3 tech? 12 battle cruisers is not a rush. That is the complete opposite of rush, that is 100% tech. Building nothing but 1 type of unit is not a rush. Rushing is focusing on small units and ignoring any kind of tech up to attack your opponent quickly. Usually a good rush builds very few harvesters to focus on all combat units.

Nobody is in a hurry to win, but everybody is trying to win. If you do not build tons of units quickly and your opponent does...then GG. And if you do build and your opponent doesn't, why wouldn't you attack during a moment of weakness? This is competitive play, win at any cost. If you want nice slow friendly games, then you need to play custom games with an agreement not to rush etc.

errr 100 supply of units 50 harvesters/50 army is certainly not a rush...

What you're complaining of isn't really a rush. Players assemble a decent force and make early pushes within the first 5-6 minutes of a game usually. That's normal. The game just doesn't move at the snail's pace that you seem to want it to. (thank god for that too IMO)

Nothing wrong with that. You barely lose any pts when you lose and gain a bunch when you win. Not to mention that you seem to be beating the diamond players.

Also being in Diamond doesn't mean a lot. There is a post over at TeamLiquid about how being in the Diamond league means you know how to win, it doesn't mean you know a lot about the game. Generally these are the players who only know one strategy and that got them to diamond, and when these players play someone who counters their strat they lose.

A lot of people are not very good at adapting and countering. They pick 1 strat and use it every game and when they get countered they just try to plow forward with that strat. You know you're up against a good diamond player when you attack with a unit comp and the next time you encounter them they have built the direct counter to what you were doing.

If they keep throwing the same units at you while you build counters it's a sign that they got good with one strat but don't know how to change it up. It's generally why you run into a ton of toss using 4gate (or Terran MMM), it works, it's simple and if you master it you can get very far. However there are a bunch that when it gets countered have no idea wtf to do next.


I am in no way trying to put down those of you that are in diamond or somehow say that I am better, most likely not. It's just that saying they were a "Diamond player" doesn't hold a lot of weight at the moment.

Mmm, very satisfying night. 3-1 in 1v1. 16-8 overall in 1v1 now, rank 12 in Plat, literally every single one of my opponents is diamond. 7-1 in the last 8 games. Hopefully I'll be promoted soon, getting annoyed. Guess I need to play more, but I can only play so many 1v1 games a day (like 3) before getting burned out. Just takes too much concentration.

First game was TvP, typical MM-ghost against Stalker/Immortal/Sentry/Lot. He bested me on my first push, but then he tried to harass my expansion and by then I had enough ghosts and marauders to take care of everything easy. Got to his base before he could rebuild and won pretty easily.

Second game was TvZ, scouted his really late pool, went 3rax MM. He did a quick hatchery, but right at the top of his ramp. Defended with 2 spine crawlers, only had lings at that point. I got the hatchery and defenses with my first push, got through with my second. He was just building a spire as I got into his base. Thought that was a strange build order.

Third game, TvP. Same thing, MM-ghost. I got beat pretty badly on my first push by immortal/sentry/stalker/lot. Fell back, grabbed some medivacs as well. We met in the middle and had a fairly even battle, he had a colossus at that point. Then he pushed with several colossi and the usual other stuff, I hadn't recovered yet, he won pretty easily. I just got out-macro'd, I'll have to look at that replay to see what I can improve.

Last game, TvZ. Scouted a really late pool and a fast expand, tried to push MM with 2rax. Got the expansion and spine crawlers killed, lost most of my forces to lings. For the next push I had gotten 3 tanks to take care of the lings, and I also scouted his spire being built. Pushed out some vikings real quick along with the MM/tank, pushed and wiped him out fairly easily with the tank help. A few mutas were just coming out as I got there, no problem. Really enjoyed this game because I don't often get a chance to actually react and counter, it's usually just either a win or loss before being able to react.

Mine is very low (like 40-50) especially compared to top players. I always wonder why they have 100+ APM even in the beginning? what are you doing?

I think my friend and I went 3:1 today in 2v2. I really didn't think we were going to lose the one game at first... it was T+Z (us) vs T+T. We almost wiped out the one Terran player very early on, but failed when the other player came in to help. We had a few good pushes, but the tide seemed to turn when one of the Terran opponents got Siege Tanks, and we didn't really have much to counter that with. I think I had plenty of money... in hindsight.. maybe it's just worthwhile to line my base with turrets to avoid drops. Maybe also consider Ghosts... they're still one of my few under-used units (right above Ravens 😛).

My friend started getting into Banelings and is doing a lot better... I'll just have to see if he's actually hotkeying now! 😛

My average APM is similar. And during the early game there's just not that much to do unless you're rushing/harrassing. I just watched a replay of a player with 30-50 average APM stomping one of these spammer types who like to tell their probe to move 30 times in 2 seconds. Leave the poor probe alone. He's moving as fast as he can!
