I have to admit that I'm fairly saddened by the direction of RE4/5. I finally broke down and bought a PS3 (got a good deal, and needed a BRD player) after my last console system being the NES. I had always been an exclusive PC gamer, but looked over at the console gamers in envy of some of their RPG titles and the horror/survival titles like SH/RE. Never really got a chance to play the RE series, and now, when I can .. it's more of an action zombie shoot 'em up. :( I played the RE5 demo and it was enjoyable, just not in the survival/horror vein for which I was looking. I'll probably still pick RE5 up, but I'm still a bit bummed.

Yea with RE4 they switched to more of an action game. Not so much survival horror any more but I really enjoyed RE4. It was a great action game. I'm for sure ganna pick it up on PC.

DL'd the demo, going to see how it goes. I held off on it for the PC because of controller complaints, I figured rather than putting up with console controls for a PC, I'll just give it a go on my PS3.

It's so hard for my brain to work on this game, haha. I keep trying to move and shoot and have to tell myself to stop. I've only played an hour or so I guess but I am enjoying it more than I thought I would. It's kinda taking me back to the old days of RE and reminding me how much fun those were.

Played the game up to chapter 3-1, so far I'm really enjoying it. Yeah, as mentioned the controls, while "slow" and awkward end up working reasonibly well with the game. I discovered I HATE the dogs, best chance is to get to where they can't get to you.

Haven't had a chance to play co-op yet. I tried joining 2 different games and I couldn't get into either, so I decided to start up with SP. Still alot of fun, the "lantern level" was a bit annoying with the AI, I tried carrying the lantern first, that didn't work too well, with the AI carrying it it was frusterating at times but not too bad.

I'll try to find someone to play co-op with today if I get a chance.

yeah. i have to say i'm sad they changed directions from zombies to biological weapons. the campiness of trying to survive raccoon city is long gone. but i knew this starting from re4. and this isn't to say re5 isn't fun. it's not just a zombie survival game anymore.

I got the game, but I won't be able to play it until tomorrow (or maybe tonight if I'm lucky).

Can someone comment on how "scary" the game is? I remember playing the original RE on PSone with my buddies and it scared the crap out of me. Especially with the introduction of co-op you have less of a feeling of isolation, and also with the numbers of zombies being much lower in the old games, there used to be much more anticipation of when you would run into the next one.

Is there still an element of fear in this game?

(NOTE: I have not played RE4)

I wish I could turn off the HUD. I really like hudless games. Maybe it could pop back up while you are fighting, or while your gun is drawn, but while just walking around It would be nice if it would just fade away

Umm, you DO know the original name of this game series is Biohazard and always has been in Japan?

yes, but what is your point. until around biohazard3/re3, the majority of the monsters that attacked you were pretty much humans turned zombies by different strains of viruses. starting re4 and now 5, the things became decidedly different - humans hosting some parasitic entity called las plagas that were part of some larger international scheme.

I thought most of the boss music was pretty good, although you might wanna put "*spoilers* around what you just said since that's near the end of the game.

Just finished the game, my thoughts (I'll warn of any spoilers and give a few lines):

The graphics are fantastic, the music (as mentioned above) is pretty good, and the sound effects for the weapons and explosions are decent. The controls, what many call outdated and difficult really weren't too bad, they fit the game well. Everyone wants to run and gun, but the enemies don't really attack you in a way that makes run and gun necessary. Later in the game there's a really basic cover system ala. Rainbow 6: Vegas and GoW, although it's pretty basic and you can beat the game without using it I'm sure.

Overall I really liked the game, although I must admit I like the first four chapters (really the first two the most) alot more than the last two. They built the game up so much about being in Africa and such but alot of the game might as well be anywhere as it all looks the same, Resident Evil 4 has the same problem. It started out as a little village setting and turned into a secret military facility type place. They should have worked with the African setting a little more in my opinion. The first 2 chapters are so great, running from street to street through a city, they should have used that setting more.

The weapons for the most part seem balanced (minus the machine guns), although I wish it was more difficult to acquire some of them, maybe make repeat playthroughs necessary. The machine guns are the one weapon I never seemed to use. The damage is really low and you blow through ammo like it's hotcakes. The need to beef the MG's up and give the player a reason to use them. Also, in every class of weapons there seems to be one stand out contender that is easily "the best." For me it's the P226 (I haven't unlocked the final gun yet though), the M3 shotgun, and the VZ whatever MG. All have much higher damage than the next closest, although they all lack the perks that some of the other guns have (critical hits, penetration, spread distance). I'd actually like to see even greater differing attributes for the guns, in the end it doesn't really matter what pistol/shotgun/MG/Sniper rifle you have for any situation because they'll all work, make it so that some are obviously better for certain times.

Also, there's an exploit that you can use that is intended I'm sure, but needs to be removed. You can load a game, quit, and save any items you pick up. What's wrong? There are several places in the game where I'd load, there would be TONS of ammo right in front of me, quit, save weapons, rinse, repeat. I did it because I kept running short on ammo...isn't that sort of the trademark RE style? You never have enough ammo? Well, now I have alot more than enough...

There's a decent spread of enemies in the game, although some are simply fodder and others are annoyingly tough. Like, out of nowhere in chapter 6 they intruduce a new type of enemy with no real story on what they are so you're not really prepared. Some of the bosses are overly easy, others are pretty annoying, to avoid any spoilers I'll leave it at that. The boss of the game wasn't hard, figuring out how to fight him was difficult for me though.

**Spoiler**

Wesker coming back was neat, but he's transformed from a miscontent normal Joe in the 1st game to a superhuman ninja from space. The same thing with Jill, in the original RE she's a "barely hanging in there" cop, now she's using karate and all sorts of stuff...and she's blonde? What the heck? Why not leave her as the short haired-beret wearing cop who's the "master of lockpicking?" Bring back a somewhat believeble enemy/scenario and a somewhat normal plot.

**End Spoiler**

I'm not exactly sure what the purpose of the bulletproof vest and melee armor are as I seemed to take the exact same amount of damage whether I was wearing it or not. Maybe it's just my imagination...

I played the game by myself the first time through, although I really wish I'd had a teammate, it would have been more fun. The one random person I play with online though was silent and he just ran from place to place...might as well have an AI teammate who actually helps. The benefit of playing by myself is that I got to go at my own pace, and I did so. I didn't rush at all, I went very slow, tried to collect alot of stuff (although I only found 6 BSAA badges!), tried to get as many treasures as I could, I'm sure I'll try to get the speed achievement sometime as well but for now I'll just try to find a co-op partner.

I played through the bonus game Mercenaries, it's kind of fun but certainly lacks the meat that the story mode has. There's a ton of people to choose from, I've no idea how to unlock them though. I'll try it again when I get a good teammate.

Overall I enjoyed the game enough to call it a "good purchase" for sure, and with the coming competitive multiplayer it'll add some fun to the game later. I plan on playing through it another time or two, once you beat the game you can use Sheva and I just started a Veteran game with her, now I've just gotta find a teammate...

I give it an 8.5/10

How long are you guys taking to pass this??? I swear I'm getting pissed off at how short most of these new games are. Multiplayer does not make up for good singleplayer.

The game is awesome. The controls are non-issue. I've been playing it single player and it's kicking arse. It's taken me around 10 hours so far and I'm halfway through. I think you can go through faster but I'm taking my time and trying find every item I can.

Same here, the first play through took me forever, just for kicks I knocked it back to the easiest difficulty and I'm almost halfway through the game after two hours or so. Really this is an "any pace" game.

Just played through Mercenaries. It's a nice twist, sort of a cross between The Club and Horde mode on GoW. It's a survival setup, but you want to kill alot along the way. Playing solo is downright hard, playing with a teammate (even an averge teammate) makes a HUGE difference. Guy who joined my game was pretty nice, he and I beat every level pretty quickly with an A ranking. We had to repeat a few of 'em, but for the most part it wasn't very difficult, I kinda wish they'd boost the difficulty. The only difference between A and S in Mercenaries is how you chain the kill streaks together, by the end of either of them you're pretty much out of guys to kill (once you break 100K or so that is).

Same thing applies here, some characters are very good, some are a bit crappy.

Very cool. I loved playing Mercs in RE4. I need to get through the SP first though.

For the first time in the history of...well...me, I've almost burned myself out on a game in the first week of owning it. The majority of Saturday, Sunday, and Monday were spent playing this...and yet I still want to play it more. Thinking I need to take a break...already :p
