Meltdown, how do you feel about the Oil giving up the first round pick for Dwayne Roloson?
(disclaimer: I know I'm not meltdown)
I think Edmonton paid way too much. 1st rounder AND a conditional pick for an aging goalie who hasn't played well in the new NHL going 6-17 with a 3.00GAA.
On the bright side, hopefully this'll drive up the value of Biron/Noronen for the Sabres. One of them has to go. It'll probably end up being Noronen.
Paid too much? Considering the draft pool this year is somehat weak, I think it is a good move. It's tough to follow up a draft year like last year and the prospects talent pool is showing it.
Roloson's record might not be shining this year, but his save % is sparkling. He is well respected around the league and I think he's a legit #1, or has proved that he deserves the shot at being a #1. But the most important thing is - he's an upgrade on the Oilers goaltending fiasco. When the coach doesn't have confidence in his goalies, it turns into a bullpen-type situation which was obviously (and sadly) apparent with MacT and the Oilers netminders. Lastly, if you think he is aging, consider the age of some of the other goalies that were on the market... Joseph, Belfour... I think the Oilers got the best "available" tender for the right price. The conditional pick is just that... they only have to give it up if they sign Roloson in the off-season.
I'm pretty excited about Samsonov too. You have to be excited when you're getting a player that has only been with one franchise for his entire NHL career. It just adds something special to the acquisition for both the player and the team... a rebirth, if you will. That said, I cannot believe that both Thornton and Samsonov were traded in the same season!
Go Oilers!!
