I'm as surprised as anyone that the Patriots dominated the Steelers last night and i'm even more surprised how similar this game is to the 2004 AFC Championship game.
Brady 2004: 66.7%, 9.86 YPA, 2 TD, 0 INT, 130.5 rating
Brady 2010: 69.8%, 8.14 YPA, 3 TD, 0 INT, 117.4 rating
Rodney Harrison picked off Big Ben for a pick six in 2004.
James Sanders picked off Big Ben for a pick six in 2010.
The Steelers mounted a courageous comeback in 2004: 24 pts in the second half.
The Steelers mounted a courageous comeback in 2010: 26 pts in the second half.
In both games, it was too little too late.
2004 final score: NE 41 - Pitt 27
2010 final score: NE 39 - Pitt 26
I guess this game really speaks about this season quite a bit: The Steelers, statistically, were the far superior team, yet they got demolished by the Patriots in nearly all facets of the game. And, while many people are going to blame their offensive line injuries for the pressure on Big Ben, watch the tape. The Patriots tried numerous times to overload the left side of the line and failed. 3 of their sacks came from pressure on the right side (uninjured starters)... the Mike Wright sack came on a stunted blitz to the left.
Obviously, the Steelers have some key injuries on both sides of the ball and maybe now we're going to see other teams exploit that, but, going into this game, they were the best team in the AFC and they got absolutely owned in all parts of the game.
My only real question for the Patriots coaching staff is why their defense goes into prevent mode so early, so often. Once those safeties (who played out of their minds last night) started giving the Steelers that 15-22 yard cushion, the Steelers' passing attack came alive.
Anyway, it was a pretty entertaining game... Just wow on how poorly the Steelers played.
edit: Forgot to add that this game is the worst beat-down the Steelers have suffered in the regular season @ Heinz field. Their 2004 loss to the Patriots was the worst beat-down they've ever suffered at Heinz.
