Eli was airing it out 64 times. There are plenty of air on the giants offense because they have 3 of the best wrs in the league in the reg. season and post season that can catch the balls.

49ers offense is their running game,no passing game but the giants did a pretty good job contain Frank Gore last night.

49ers should go after Vjax during the offseason.

NO no no! I like Vincent just where he is! :colbert:

And yeah, it's tough for Eli to not throw the ball when he has that corps. Cruz and Nicks are freaking beasts. Smith did have a couple of nice bombs--2 to Davis, of course, bu they are too reliant on his output.

In the end, I don't think the game came down to the ineffectiveness of Niners air game, but those two terrible turnovers. One could say that a more developed Vernon Davis and diverse offense during the regular season would have helped--but how would that have actually improved their season? They already received a playoff bye. :\

Then, there was the fumble that was negated by a forward progress whistle. WHY WAS THE WHISTLE BLOWN AS SOON AS HE WAS HIT??? That hadn't happened all game for the refs to blow the whistle immediately. I saw Alex Smith get stood up and held for seconds before getting pulled to the ground and heard no whistles. To add insult to injury, the whistle was blown AFTER the ball was stripped.

This pissed everyone off at the game.. We were all so livid. Complete BS it couldn't be challenged.. then to come home and see it in slow-motion and what not.. never have I been more pissed at the officiating.

I never expected a 13-3 season and hosting a conference championship, but man.. a hard loss to take.

I was rooting for the Giants and thought that fumble call was bullshit.

I understand the "forward progress" part of it, but they stripped him of the ball almost as soon as they hit him.

Watch the slow motion part in this video:

http://www.nfl.com/videos/nfl-playoffs/09000d5d8263fe84/Bradshaw-s-controversial-near-fumble

You can see that by the time the ball is stripped, Bradshaw is already moving backwards relative to the line of scrimmage. I was hoping for the 49ers to win too, but they made the right call.

rewatching the play

the fumble happened before the whistle, but given the extremely short time between fumble and whistle, it's obvious the intent of the referees was to whistle the play dead before the fumble actually happened

Its not like he was being moved back yards and yards like most "forward progress" rules. He was still struggling and giving effort. He's hit, moved back from the initial hit and then hit with a second tackle with the ball being stripped out, then a whistle blows.

Even with kneepads, he had to feel it hit him and you can tell he knew by the way he looked as it bounced off his knee. He just watched it bounce off and didn't even bother going after it. That isn't even taking into account that he shouldn't have been anywhere near the ball in the first place.

My take on it was that he was doing what more football and basketball players should do: acting like nothing happened. Quite often when a player does something very difficult to discern the first thing they do is draw attention to the action by making a big show demonstrating that they clearly didn't do anything.

In this case Williams was running one way and the ball was going the other; the odds of him recovering were very slim. Rather than try to stop, change direction, and beat one (maybe two) Giants to the ball you act like nothing happened. That gives the on-field officials the impression that of course you didn't touch the ball (which actually worked) and hope that it's not challenged or not indisputable.

Why go after a guy who's primary game is the deep ball when your QB can't throw the deep ball?

I think Dwayne Bowe would be a much better fit.

Did you miss that ~50 yard bomb he threw to V Davis in the first half?

:hmm:

Smith can definitely throw the deep ball, I just don't think it's his wheelhouse.

I'm still pissed about the way the 9ers lost. I wouldn't care if they lost by being out played and didn't expect them to make it this far anyway. But when they were up 3 points and made two consecutive drive stops I thought they had the game in the bag. Then that fucker bumped the ball with his knee. Fuck, that was huge!

"kyle williams used to return punts, then he took a football to the knee"

As much as I hate those arrow to the knee jokes, I have to admit, I laughed pretty hard at that one. Poor bastard probably hasn't stopped punching himself.

lol, that's the best "...to the knee" joke I've seen since the meme started.

You know what else pisses me off about this whole deal?

Now we have to feel sorry for this guy because of the "death threats" garbage. Don't get me wrong - making death threats about sports is moronic crap and shouldn't happen, but this was Twitter, for God's sake.

That guy lost the game all by himself. The whole "the 49ers had other chances to win" or "there's plenty of blame to go around" is total nonsense.

When someone loses a game (by foolish actions) that his teamates are killing themselves to win there should be consequences. Why was he even within 10 feet of that punt?

That guy lost the game all by himself.

The guy was extra-special, no doubt, but Alex Smith is the worst QB in football. All he had to do was get possibly the best field goal kicker in football within kicking distance during any of those atrocious drives, and the 'Niners win in regulation.

It was most certainly a tag-team effort between Kyle Williams and Smith.

Without Williams, the 49ers would of have won regulation in the first place without that Giants drive and TD that started on the 29 yard line. The game should of been 17-10 Niners.

Pull some random dude out of the stands and put him at QB, and the 49ers win in regulation, even with Williams's spectacular punt dance.

The happiest person on the 49ers is Alex Smith, because Kyle Williams is taking all the blame.
