One of the comments after the article said it's a rule that if you step out of the box while the pitch is being delivered, and the pitch is then legally delivered, it is an automatic strike.

If that's true, then the whole outburst boils down to Ortiz not knowing the rules.

This. Umpire never called time either so Ortiz was wrong.

EDIT: Looking at the video over and over, it doesn't look like he was out of the box until the ball was already in the catcher's glove. But since he was standing straight up before the catcher caught the ball, his strike zone becomes bigger since he's not crouching in his stance. I dunno but regardless, Ortiz should be suspended for that outburst. Very unprofessional though funny 😀

It's funny what can set you off. I was playing hockey a couple years ago trying to chase a puck in the corner and the defenseman had me wrapped up with his stick. He had me hooked for several seconds, and just would not let go. Finally I batted his stick away from my body and went after the puck.

The ref whistled me for a penalty. I exploded. lol. I'm usually not one to say anything to the ref, but the idea that I would be called for a penalty for trying to relieve myself of an illegal obstruction after the ref had failed to do so by calling one on the other guy set me into a rage.

Steve Delabar threw the 48th immaculate inning in history last night (9 pitches, 3 strike outs).

When the season goes as crappy as the Jays this year you have to find the bright spots!

It is an unbelievable thing to behold dominance like that (Mr. umpire was a bit helpful too, as is likely the case for all feats like that).

His story is just awesome to read about, given where he is right now. Definition of the shutdown reliever this year.

There should be a term for coming into a game, throwing one pitch, giving up a grand slam, and then being pulled.

Or maybe giving up a grand slam on the 4th pitch of the inning?

This thread sucks and so does all of baseball. Only one guy (ScoobMaster) even talking about what happened last night with the Pirates. They spanked the Cardinals pretty bad last night routing them in a double header. 20 fing years I had to watch the crap that was call Pirates to finally see what might happen this year. The Pirates seem to be the real deal this year.

That's because I am a Pirates fan and have been for over 30 years (no bandwagon fan here!)

I am old enough to remember the last championship in 1979 (I was 10 years old), but have had to suffer through the years since then (the tease of the early 90s team and when "Sid slid" then the current 20 year losing streak)! I have waited two decades to see a Pirates team that is not the target of jokes and has an honest potential at a pennant. I am excited and finall have something to cheer about.

HELL YEAH!!!!!! Pirates, baby!!!!!!!!!!!

Friday will be the end of our long national nightmare when A-Gone is banned for life, or what will effectively be life.

and again I say.....

PIRATES!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

4 wins in a row vs. the Cardinals! Extend that NL central lead!

As a Braves fan, on behalf of the Braves, I'd like to say you're welcome. I hope you enjoy continuing the Cardinals losing streak we started for ya 😉

I'm genuinely happy to see the Pirates play well and seeing PNC Park packed with fans. Please win the division. I had enough of pond scum. 😛

Francisco Liriano and Aj Burnett as your frontline starters might be just crazy enough to work.

Tell a Cubs fan how awful it is 😀

How sad is it that eight other teams currently have a worse record than the Cubs?

And that is with the league lead of twenty two blown saves. And maybe three players a contender would want on their roster.

At least we have the Blackhawks.

The Pirates and A's are amazing again this year, except the Pirates have more pitching firepower than last year. Incredible

Sucks to be the Indians. And Royals. Should have given up.

Tigers shouldn't get too cocky. The Rays were more games behind before they came back. All top 3 teams in the AL Central were 9-1 in their last 10. That's going to be a heck of a race.

Difference...the Rays were actually good.

And we're about to see how good the Tigers are without Johnny Steroid Peralta. A nice hit to that lineup.

Texas losing Nelson Cruz is even bigger since he's their best power hitter aside from Beltre.

He also strikes out a lot. I think we'll be ok without him. Beltre will be brought up from the minors I'm guessing which will be a nice addition. We need more solid clutch hitters and less boomstick.

They're saying it will be some kid named Butler. Bats .321 against lefties which is good.

Good thing his loss has already been addressed. And it's Jhonny. Glad that we were able to get a decent 2/3 of a season out of him...see ya.
