Got it from Target w/ extra Wii Wheel. Gonna play it tonight. Loved MK:DS. If you've played previous MKs, you should know there are tricks that will help you avoid some of the elite items.

man, $15 for an extra wheel remote... I actually enjoy using it surprisingly. I did not find the wii remote alone to be terrible on a quick run through though. The joystiq review scared me a bit about it.

It is fun, but the items are pushing the annoying envelope further. I was never that great in the game anyway, but I would like to unlock everything.

And I didn't notice anyone mention it before, but the save games are locked just like SSBB. WTF is the point now. I can't move my saves I want to keep for whatever reason might come up. With WiiWare and more VC stuff, having to delete and redownload or transfer those between the wii and SD card just to play will be highly aggravating.

DivideByZero, seems like you aren't disagreeing with BD2003 about the items, only about whether it detracts from the fun. So if we don't like the randomness associated with excessive items, does that mean we are more likely to have issues with it like BD2003 does? Is there in fact no way to alter the rules in online multiplayer or single player, or is there a way and BD2003, not having the manual, didn't notice it?

There's no way to modify the rules in single player GP, but you can modify it in single player Vs. mode and run a pseudo-GP, but you wont be able to unlock anything. You can modify the items in online multiplayer friend matches, but not in random online matches.

Whats excessive to some might not be excessive to others, I think youre really just going to have to play it yourself to know for sure.

Edit: If you didnt like double dash because of the items, you probably won't like this one unless you turn it on basic. Basic tones it down to where power items are *very* rare. For what its worth, I didnt think DD was all that bad, so you might hate the excessive items even more than me, if thats even possible.

I've played a little bit of online and the items are not nearly as bad as some people make it sound. The same players were consistently finishing in the top 3 or 4 except for some rare occasions. It wasn't the all out randomness that some people make it out to be.

I've been having a blast with it so far.

still too much, heh. Should really be $5 tops. I will say though at least it feels nice. I'll probably just pick up the third party ones that pop up, if that. I've notice it having trouble getting the right direction of my sliding.

What accessory do you know that's $5?

No trouble. I got Mario Kart from BB and they had plenty of wheels. I ended up deciding to get an extra wheel later in the day at Walmart and they had a lot as well.

Can you dodge blue shells in this one??? Also, can you pick who you want to play online, or is it just random??

Ugh, and they nerfed the gamecube controller. Its better for the game, and they tried to equalize it, but not letting you remap X, and Y is the same as Z. No map the "trick" button to one of those either.

the third party ones actually are $5 each in a 3 pack ($15 for the pack). I know, third party. Anyway, it's a subjective complaint.

Why would you be able to dodge blue shells? The whole point is it's a guaranteed hit. They should keep it out of the last 30-45 seconds of the game though IMO.

Online is just like most other Wii games.. you can pick from your friend code list (although, i don't know if you can fill the rest w/ random folks or what, haven't tried it yet) or do random regional/worldwide. It's done a much better job than SSBB IMO, both in speed and the fact you can watch the race that's running as you're about to join it.

On an added note, I'm really liking the wheel use more and more.

Done and done.

I got metals (all gold except for one bronze and two silver) in all the 50cc, 100cc, and 150cc circuits/races. Pretty solid game--it's definitely fun. I especially enjoyed the design of some of the new, harder levels. Really well made.

I've played all the Mario Kart games and the DS version is definitely my most favorite, mainly due to the local wireless gameplay. Its a real test in frustration when playing the smaller tracks though, damn. Part of the reason is because of the increase in racers from 8 to 12--it shows in the bombardment of goodies. At one point, on the final lap on one particular track I was gunning for the finish line (I was in first) and I got hit with lightening, a Blue shell, two red shells, and then a freak'n green shell (wtf?!)! I was just a few feet from the finish line and by the time I stopped spinning and rolling, several guys had caught up already and they began smashing into my further stalling and bouncing me around--I made 6th. I was so absolutely frustrated that I just had to walk away from the game once giving the game and it's developers a few choice words. It felt SO cheap that I had enough. I'm sure playing the game for 6 hours straight lead to that level of frustration, but still.

I hopped on line to see what that was like and it was pretty painless and lag free. I played against 4 other guys and not one racial slur was uttered. :p

You were able to dodge blue shells in MK:DS (I don't remember about DD). You had to boost at exactly the right time or something. I've only done it once or twice.Usually if I hear the blue shell coming I hit the breaks and let people pass me so they're the ones who get whacked.

Well I got the chance to play this yesterday and wow, seems like they didn't do much work at all to improve anything. Honestly I like the DS version better.

So far, I love it.

I'm really surprised at how well it controls with the Wii wheel - I haven't had any desire to plug in a controller or try a nunchuk/wiimote combo. I do have to admit that I haven't tried using the wiimote alone, so I don't know how much the wheel itself adds to the experience. But I have never felt like I have a lack of control, which was a bit surprising.

The online play was really fun. No noticeable lag, and quick to get into a game. There was a noticeable framerate slowdown with two player online mode, but not enough that it affected our ability to play. The ranking system seems to work pretty well. The comments from one user earlier that rankings mean nothing due to the items are way overstated. If that was the case, you wouldn't be seeing people with 7000+ rankings (and one guy in particular was just dominating - so there's definitely a skill/learning element involved). I will admit that the uber-items are just a bit too common for my tastes, but it hasn't detracted from my enjoyment of the game.

You can set up games just withing your friend list. Battle or GP.

You can also join a friend that's already playing in another room of random people. That's a big improvement over the DS version.

I've chopped up your post to point out my biggest complaint with the game.

When playing two player online, only one player gets a rating. The second person has to play as a guest, even if both people have a license and save game file on that wii. This is a huge oversight and I think it's the stupidest decision Nintendo made with this game.

I haven't seen this pointed out in any of the reviews I've read and I don't understand why.

You know, I was actually going to ask about that. I didn't play around with it much so I wasn't sure if we had just missed something or if it was actually not possible to have two people get ratings at the same time. I agree that was a dumb decision if true. I can't imagine why they would have gone that way.

I also really, really wish there was local two-player GP (like MK64 had).

Thus far, seems like BD2003's complaint is spot on, based on everything I've seen from users playing 150cc. And the lack of a local GP mode is kind of annoying. I hope I don't regret buying this game. Who makes the $5 wheels that you can buy in a 3 pack?

I guess I'm not as picky with my games as most of you are. I loved MK64, but I haven't played any MK since. I got MK for the wii yesterday, and I'm having a blast. I can say that most of the concerns are valid (no local 2 player GP, no basic mode GP, and item hell), but none of these are deal breakers.

It's a $50 game, and I'll easily get $50 worth of entertainment out of it.

I picked this up on Sunday and I'm having a Blast with it. I thought I would hate the Wheel, but I really like using it so far.

The online is also great compared to Brawl.
