Yes, but it's like saying... let's wait for an undetermined amount of time for the competition to catch up.

I'm not sure how long it'll take for the Xoom to fix all of those software bugs and have Flash on it, but the iPad 2 will be out next week, and it'll inherit everything from the iPad 1, which means all of those softwares, and Skyfire for some Flash viewing.

So for the time being, it's just not looking very bright for competition.

That's exactly what everyone said when the iPhone was released. It's the same thing all over again. Xoom is early competition, there's still TONS of other stuff to get released. Just give it time, it's coming.

Apple delivered another smackdown. RIP Zoom, Tab2, and HP. Playbook might be the only one that makes it. Apple is giving you a choice with $499 16gb version. Zoom should have released this version too instead of $600 32gb only. Apple is going to own the tablet market for another year. Ipad1 is going to own the low end market with $399. That means used ones will be $250 range and that will kill any cheap Android tablet from gaining traction. Even Color Nook loses its appeal as cheap Android tablet. You have to hack that thing to death to make it usable and with the iPad you can just pick up and play. I'm glad I waited and didnt bite on the $200 Ebay Nook.

I am glad I ordered the Nook Color. Half the price of iPad1, even after the price cut.
Going to play with it while hordes of Honeycomb competitors show up and prices fall into the $400 range and below, then get an Asus Transformer for home tablet and netbook duty, and keep Nook Color for e-reader and on the go duty.
If you think that Android devices are not going to gain traction, you simply haven't been paying attention.

Hack it to death? It takes ~10 minutes, 30 if you're clueless and can read a web page. Not the solution for turn-key types, but for techie people it's a breeze.

I'm not talking about how long it takes. I did lot of reading about Nook at XDA since I was very interested in buying it but it still takes too much work to get it working with bugs and is missing features. Not a deal breaker and very good deal previously but Apple changed the rules again today and old prices dont apply. Color Nook is no longer the deal it was yesterday.

Oh, they'll eventually get some market share, but it'll be some time in 2012, now.

Well, it has to beat this level of performance first:

First video. Brief performance overview. Ultra smooth and ultra fast loading and animations.

Sure it is. It's a $220 7" tablet that can be OCed to 1.2GHz and can run a very stable Froyo build, for all those Flash lovers and people who want more bells and whistles. There's still nothing else out there with it's build quality and form factor, for the price.

Lack of Flash on iPad is a deal breaker for me. The Nook is going to be for bedroom duty, and some of the sites I like to visit in the bedroom run on Flash 😉
Also, as much as people like to hate on the 7 inches, it's the perfect size for something you want to actually take with you on public transportation and hold in your hand for any period of time.

Not today but how long do you think before millions of unsold Galaxy Tabs sitting at retailers warehouses start unloading on Ebay and at stores. I fully expect sub $300 Tabs soon.

To me its an apples and oranges comparison. the Nook/nook color is sold just as an ereader.

You're expecting people to add essentially features that its not advertise and not paid to do so. Apple has plenty of people who this is their job. XDA devs are essentially do it as a hobby.

What rules did apple change? They didn't exactly go out and show a redone UI or anything. If you look at the teardown of the original ipad, there was a lot of empty space which many wondered why apple did shave them off.

the specs upgrades were a given.

I'm actually kind of 50:50 between them now.

The 32GB Xoom wifi is confirmed at £450 and the 32GB ipad 2 will be £499 (the same as the old model). So the xoom is going to be cheaper here and it has the bigger screen, but it doesn't have anywhere near the 3rd party app support.

Apple needs to get with the times and update the UI. Page after page of icons in grid layout is old stuff at this point. I had to jailbreak my iPhone to get things like a notification pulldown and a swipe-to-launch-settings toggle.

i still cant believe they don't have widgets yet

Soon? Maybe 4-6 months, unless you're talking a subsidized price. That's a lot of time in this business.

Yea I saw that video and commented on it 1 page ago. It looks sweet but as we've seen, you don't need super smooth performance to be #1. There's going to be MORE than enough competition. Like I said, it's the same thing all over again with the iPhone. Competition is coming. There's more than enough room for all the competition.

If you think that Android devices are not going to gain traction, you simply haven't been paying attention.

Paying attention to what? They have had a full year to 'gain traction'. Where is this traction you speak of? RIGHT NOW, at this moment?

In the future anything can happen, show me the traction right now.

EDIT: I want competition to come too, but you speak as if its going to be here in 1 month. I haven't seen anything that speaks of these 'ipad killers'. Please show me one, I am seriously dying for it to happen.

Oh, they'll eventually get some market share, but it'll be some time in 2012, now.

I think it's going to be this fall going into the holiday season. Everyone and their mother is going to have a Honeycomb tablet out around the summer time. By fall, a glut should develop, and the real price wars will begin in earnest, as dozens of players try to compete for market share and relevance. Expect a bloodbath in Android tablet pricing. It may even undershoot production costs as the weak and inefficient get weeded out and clear inventories at fire sale prices.
Great time for consumer. People who are buying $500+ tablets now are going to feel like idiots.

Go re-watch CES and MWC coverage if you want an idea of what's in the pipeline already. RIGHT NOW, you have a point, which is why I am buying a Nook Color.

All I see are spec hounds barking about how Android tabs are technically superior, when the truth is consumers don't care. They want a shiny toy that will do cool things, or a thin gizmo for running a few apps. Specs and details are for chumps, and Apple will rake in the money while the Android boys will struggle to sell anything.

"But... but... we have a quad-core 2GHz processor, 2GB of RAM, 128GB of storage, Android 3.0, microSDHC slot, HDMI out, a 10MP camera, and built-in barometer!"

*customer's eyes glaze over*

Exactly why I said this is the worst time to buy a tablet. There's so much coming later in this year.

This is how I feel as well. With so many competitors set to release tablets this year I'm going to wait it out and get whichever tablet fits best for me.

Well people say the same thing about phones and look how that's gone. I don't understand why anyone would say competition is done. The iPad 2 looks great but it's ridiculous to think that competition wouldn't be able to pick up by the end of this year.

You hear people saying specs don't matter, only smooth UI matters, well it seems there's MORE than enough room for all of them. The market has shown that.
