Yea I saw that video and commented on it 1 page ago. It looks sweet but as we've seen, you don't need super smooth performance to be #1. There's going to be MORE than enough competition. Like I said, it's the same thing all over again with the iPhone. Competition is coming. There's more than enough room for all the competition.

I have to disagree, specs mean nothing since the end user will only notice how "fast" something is while they're playing with it. It may mean more to us since we follow all the SoCs and such. But just by seeing people in my office complain about their 3ghz laptops running "slow" says that people don't get it and/or don't care. Most IT people should see this. I'm an engineer so I like specs and stuff like that as much as the next person on these boards. But when the flagship honeycomb and tegra 2 tablet launches and gets riddled with reviews docking it points based on how it's STILL not smooth even with dual core and gpu acceleration. Something is wrong. I know google is known for having a bunch of beta shit but for consumers to care about the next android tablet since they ARE the ones doing catch up, it needs to be near flawless when it comes to the UI to even start competing properly. I hear so many people get turned off just from the get go of playing with an android tab because it "feels" slow. Releasing bug shit (stuff people can notice while just dicking around) just further perpetuates that idea iOs is smooth, awesome, and just works.

Well people say the same thing about phones and look how that's gone. I don't understand why anyone would say competition is done. The iPad 2 looks great but it's ridiculous to think that competition wouldn't be able to pick up by the end of this year.
How long did it take to compete on phones? This is a new market and they're a year behind, ask GM how long it took to compete with Honda.

Maybe 20% of tab market share by 2012, maybe. That's if they slash their prices to the bone and sell for $200 below the iPad 2. Here's what my TA, an average 23 year-old college kid, said about non-iPad tablets:

"Do they run iTunes?"

That tell you something?

Just like people here say specs don't matter to the average consumer, a flawless UI obviously doesn't matter either. The market has shown there's MORE than enough room for both. Only people on these boards say that. I don't know why you guys keep saying that when the market clearly shows there's room for both.

Im sure hoping so. Is there anything in the pipeline thats already been announced for later in the year? All i know about is the playbook, which actually looks pretty cool

Well like people have said, just like with the phones, there will be TONS of cheap Android tablets like there has been with phones plus the HP tablet looks great as well. Competition is coming and the only thing to do it either buy the iPad 2 or wait cus right now is still too early to buy a tablet.

I'll admit the Playbook looks interesting, and I have hopes for it, as long as it sells for <$400.

Ipad1 is going to own the low end market with $399. That means used ones will be $250 range

Um...you never ebay Apple items do you? They hardly lose that much value second-hand. Maybe $300. Maybe. In like 6 months.

Not today but how long do you think before millions of unsold Galaxy Tabs sitting at retailers warehouses start unloading on Ebay and at stores. I fully expect sub $300 Tabs soon.

The rest of the market is determined to get as much margins off the tablets while they can. To me, the Samsung Galaxy was a tablet success story: it was just as expensive as an iPad 1 with worse features and it still sold millions. I bet Samsung made more money off that tablet then they made off their netbook line (at least the margins were higher).

Computer and phone manufacturers HATE that their markets have turned into such a low margin business. They are very jealous of Apple's margins to the point that I think many are jumping on the tablet bandwagon just because they believe that these new "hot" tablets are a temporary escape from the rat race. Already makers like Archos are working on a cheap Xoom ripoff, and I expect six months from now the tablet market will be a different story.

Till then NOTHING beats a $200 Nook on the low end...

Room for both android and ios?

Well, they said the iPad 2 has up to 9x faster graphics than the last generation.

Tegra 2 at most outpaces the iPad 1 by 4 times, but not more. Typically around 3 times. So if that's anything to go by, the iPad 2 already has a GPU that's faster than Tegra 2 by a lot.

1GHz. Tech specs on Apple's website.

At one point, Apple also claimed that the IBM PowerPC CPUs out performed Intel/AMD. I'll believe the 9x claim when there's actual proof.

That was before. Apple has recently been dead-on about their stats concerning their own device.

The GeForce 320M is about 1.5x to 2.5x faster than the GeForce 9400M. The iPad does last about 10 hours under the conditions they measured it with. The MacBook Pro 13" 2010 does last about 10 hours with 50% brightness and WIFI web surf without Flash.

Trying to find faults in someone's statements many years before to discredit how they are right now doesn't really say much. I was much more foolish as a 15-year-old kid compared to how I am now.

Or how about just making it easier, when Apple claims a battery life, they're almost always spot on with it.

May pick-up a iPad2 in the near future. Personally, I see my gf and myself using this 90% of the time at home over desktop/laptops. Of course, she loves Apple stuff b/c of all of accessories that are available.

I prefer the stainless steel over black/white, too bad it's not an option.

Don't forget MS are supposed to be demoing their windows 8 tablet OS in June. If they can pull off a tablet that's as user friendly and slick as an ipad but runs regular windows applications they might have a winning combination.

The only thing I want to see that comes outta their team is the courier. Otherwise, I'm gonna boycott everything in a resemblance of a MS Tablet! except the phone...

Meh I'm underwhelmed but it's to be expected as they didn't need to change much to keep up with competition. Of course they require an adapter for everything which sucks but when you buy Apple products, that's to be expected. Also really disappointed that they still have not updated the notification system in iOS yet. Maybe they're saving that for June.

The real good news is that the old iPad is going to be cheap so I might buy it for my mom in a few months.

Well, the presentation was good admittedly. Say what you will about Apple but they know how to create hype. All of the media attention is free advertising that companies like Motorola, RIM, Samsung, etc, only wish they had.

As for the actual iPad 2, I'd agree that it was kinda "meh" because the hardware specs mostly only match the latest tablets. No one feature really jumps out at you that makes you drool. Heck, Engadget had a feature comparison between that and some of the other announced tablets and it's largely equal as far as features go.

The notification system is probably the biggest issue when comparing iOS to other mobile OS's at the moment. That and a genuine widget based home screen that you can modify to show different info like the time, probably multiple time zones, weather, stocks, sports scores, etc.

If you have add same amount of memory (32 gig), SD card cable, and HDMI cable, WiFi iPad would be $670, compared to $600 WiFi Xoom.

And Xoom prices are going to fall fast (if Moto wants to stay competitive) once all the other Honeycomb dual core tablets hit the scene in a few weeks.

Ok. But if you look at the Wifi+3G option it's equal in price. You didn't add any caveats in your original post. So we're both right. It just depends on your config.

And your post assumes the person already had a mini-HDMI cable on hand. That's not always the case. Retail outlets are likely going to charge you $20 for HDMI cable for your Xoom.

With that said, I do expect the price of the Xoom to drop after roughly two months. The Xoom will have to compete with not just the iPad 2 but other Android tablets. Apple is highly unlikely to drop the MSRP of the ipad 2 unless sales are terrible.

At one point, Apple also claimed that the IBM PowerPC CPUs out performed Intel/AMD. I'll believe the 9x claim when there's actual proof.

The point was arguable. At the very least it was powerful enough that someone on a Mac wouldn't feel jealous of the processor power of Windows based computers. It was only for a very very brief period but PowerPC was a very powerful CPU when it was first released. Then the AMD vs Intel wars took over and x86 based processors leaped forward. PowerPC was a victim of Apple's limited market share and languished. Heck, PowerPC derivatives basically powers all three consoles gaming systems.

Well, the iPad 2 graphics processing power would be drool-worthy at least. 9x the power of the last iPad means Tegra 2 would look silly compared to it. It'll easily top every graphics benchmark chart and leave the closest competitor far behind if that claim is as conservative as their other claims.

I'll wait and see to comment until we see some real stuff to show off the power. I don't care what anyone says but Jobs always will say anything to make his product look better true or not. I never trust anything he says.

I can't believe they made it faster, thinner and weigh less with the same battery life.

Can you imagine what we'll be looking at in 5-10 years?

The refurb Gen 1 iPads 16GB WiFi are now $349 with a full warranty...

Why can you not believe it? It has been happening in every computing device category for ages. I would not believe it if they did not make it faster, thinner and lighter with same battery life.

It's flipping thinner than an iPhone 4 😱, 33% thinner than the previous generation, I expected a little thinner, not this much.

Here's a video of the event today: http://events.apple.com.edgesuite.net/1103pijanbdvaaj/event/index.html

The Digital AV adapter works on iP4, iPod Touch gen 4, iPad Gen 1, and Gen 2.

Use the Apple Digital AV Adapter to mirror whatever’s on your iPad 2 screen — apps, presentations, websites, and more — on your HDTV or HDMI-compatible display in up to 1080p HD (movies play at up to 720p).
Watch slideshows and movies on the big screen in up to 720p by connecting your iPad, iPhone 4, or iPod touch (4th generation) to an HDTV or HDMI-compatible display.
The Apple Digital AV Adapter routes digital audio to screens that support it.
Connect the Apple Digital AV Adapter to your iPad, iPhone 4, or iPod touch (4th generation) via the 30-pin dock connector and to your HDMI-compatible display using an HDMI cable (sold separately).
A second 30-pin connector built into the AV adapter lets you charge and sync your device while it’s connected to your HDMI-compatible display

4:3 still? Really? A bump in resolution would have been nice, but getting a decent form factor for media consumption would have been a bigger factor IMO. Playing most modern video content the iPad2 won't have a much larger viewable area then a Nook Color(roughly equal to an 8" tablet).

If Moto/RIM/Samsung are smart they will hammer this point home, terrible form factor for a media consumption device.

"Do they run iTunes?"

That tell you something?

What is hilarious about that is some people won't buy them because of the itunes requirement.

I mean you can't even activate or update the thing without hooking it up to a laptop/desktop with itunes installed.

Ability to use Android and Blackberry devices like a flash drive = amazing.
