I'm going to get a new Evo a little later this month, saying goodbye to Blackberry and AT&T. Any chance it'll come with 2.2 right out of the box?

Still check for updates. There was one released a little over a month ago that makes the display much smoother (removes 30 fps cap). I'd guess most new Evos ship with it but you never know.

Just got my Evo.. and love it :) It did come with 2.2 out of the box.

And a nice little benefit from switching away from AT&T: I have 3G at work.. no more EDGE slowness.

Sweet, now root it, and install free tethering and start slapping on some custom ROM's

I love my EVO as well :)

I am in Big Sky, Montana. Rooted/tethered on my wife's laptop.

I'm pretty pleased with the stock setup, actually. I'll consider rooting when/if I see a compelling reason to do so.

I rooted to "Freeze" the stock Sprint apps like nascar/facebook/etc. Also to get the free tethering.
I am not running any custom ROMS.

HTC Sense UI is a pig, I've rooted just because of how slow it is.... (prior to the 30 fps cap) and now, the cap is gone, I'm back to Sense UI 2.2. Wow, I feel how much of a hog t the Sense UI is... I was on CM6. The main reason why i went back was for the 4G. But I really dislike it.

I hate the stupid sensitivity of the 4 capacitive buttons on the bottom... I always hit it on accident when i'm in the middle of something. Ane the Proximity sensor doesn't work very well. I'm ALWAYS calling my friend AGAIN for NO reason AT ALL. I'll be on the phone with him, and all of a sudden, i'll be calling him again for no reason, at the same time.

Maybe I have a bad EVO, but I'm already on my second one.

Anyone go from a touch pro to the EVO? I'm looking to move into something newer and wanted to see if anyone regretted the WM to android move. I'm on sprint but no 4G yet so I'm not sure it's worth it yet. Any insight?

Well, I don't regret the move from Blackberry to Android.. that's for sure. I also don't miss AT&T.

Is this still the Sprint phone of choice? My 1-yr upgrade hits in a few weeks and I'm torn betwee getting this, the epic,or just waiting it out with the pre a little longer.

I have two gripes with the Epic:

1. Physical keyboard (no thanks)
2. Samsung's UI.

If you don't care about those things it's a slightly better phone hardware-wise than the Evo.

Yea I would prefer a fascinate or captivate over the epic. I keep having hopes that spring will offer another keyboard-less 4g phone; something a bit thinner/lighter than the evo (my dream would be nexus S). Hum. I'd like to get a smartphone sometime next 3 or 4 months but they won't even release a roadmap... bleh. lousy company.

The UI on the Epic isn't great but it's not that bad. It's easily replaced with Launcher Pro and then you're just left with the Samsung apps vs. Sense apps. And while I'm not a huge fan of Samsung's apps (and I quite like Sense apps), that's not a deal breaker. The one UI thing about the Samsung I love are the toggle switches for 4G, WiFi, Bluetooth, and GPS in the notification area.

Couple things I'll say on the comparison since I've used both phones a lot:

- The Epic is definitely faster. Especially if you like games. But even general use is smoother on the Epic.
- The Epic's screen has a strange "screen door effect." It's not bad but text and solid light backgrounds look a little weird.
- The Epic's keyboard is good, but it has Swype and that's so much better I almost never use the keyboard. However, the keyboard is great for emulating games.
- The EVO has a much, much lower minimum brightness setting on the screen. So dim that it's almost hard to see in a totally dark room. The Epic on the other hand is so bright at minimum brightness that it kind of hurts your eyes if you try to use it when it's dark. But this isn't a situation that comes up much.
- They both have pretty mediocre battery life.

I only mention Samsung's UI because I like Sense right out-of-the-box more than I ever liked Samsung's.

The Evo (mine, anyway) came with toggle switches for 4G, WiFi, Bluetooth, and GPS on one of the home screens (the one just to the left of the main one).

I've been using an EVO for 3 weeks now, and love it, dunno about the complaint about screen brightness, it's fine for me.

Biggest issue is battery life IMHO, and if you have a couple of chargers or an extra battery, it's a non-issue.

Sprint has an HTC slider coming out soon, the Knight, but I wouldn't expect to see anything else from them before the holidays.

The 4G really doesn't factor in to day to day use, if you tether, it's a big plus, and the Developers have a ton of custom roms out there, I have 8 different roms I can swap to, if you don't need the 4G, Cyanogen gives the best battery life I've found, but no 4G yet.

I could have bought anything, and switch carriers like I change my socks, I love my EVO and Sprint so far... I've been out of contract for years, and I bit on the EVO...

For me, I went from Touch Pro to Palm Pre. Then I upgraded to the Evo (which was early this month).

Even the jump from the Pre to Evo was pretty dramatic let alone a jump from Touch Pro to Pre.

My Touch Pro was literally on its knees when I moved to the Pre, and this was right at the 1yr old birthday of my Touch Pro.. good god that thing was horrible build quality. First the keyboard died, then it was the camera.. who knows how much longer it would've been before the screen died.

BTW, I love my evo.

and js80, 4g works with only some custom roms. Cyanogen is not one of them.

I went from TP2 ---> Evo....fine for the most part. I miss Core player and the keyboard TBH. Ive had it about 2 months and still prefer TP2's keyboard.
