Isn't it just a feature of capacitive screens? Need two terminals for a capacitance.

I have used other phones with capacitive screens that were just resting on a pillow/cushion/desk/table with no problems, so I don't think that is the case.

Sounds like if you touch it on the side with your pinky and you'll be fine. You'd have to be pretty careful to not ground the phone somehow.

eh, I dunno.

Sitting at a table/bar and having your phone laying there face up, it is plenty simple to touch and poke the screen without grounding it by holding it in your hand. Not like I do this all the time, but it is definitely possible (and preferable if one is trying to eat).

Unless you only have one finger, you can ground it with another one without using two hands. Of course if it's a major problem to do that, an HTC phone may not be for you 😀

BTW, works fine on the table:

I've had my EVO since launch and am approaching the end of my return period... the battery life is really killing me, and I can't decide if I'd rather just deal with it, or return this and go pick up a Droid Incredible...

You'll experience similar battery life, spoken from experience.

I don't understand what people are doing to kill the battery so quickly...combined with some advanced app killer, I use the SHIT out of my phone all day. 4G, Wifi, and I could go on all day. Maybe it's just intermittent with different phones?

Well, today my phone pretty much sat on my desk from 8:30 AM to 5:30 PM, and was at 10% battery. I used it once to check facebook, and another time to take a couple of pictures and send them out using gmail. That's it; not a damn thing else.

are you running task killer or anything?

I've been using my phone off and on since 7:00 am ET and my battery is like at 70% full.

fwiw, I have all syncing turned off except facebook contacts (syncs once/day), google calendar, and weather (syncs every 12 hours)

side-note, anyone else find that Qik and Sprint Navigator seem to start by themselves randomly in the background? wish I could just uninstall them... I have no use for video conferencing ever.

That is kind of a pain in the ass. I've kind of gotten into the habit of running task killer almost every time I turn the screen off, lol. I'm experiencing similar battery life as you.

Which app killer do you run? Stories like this really lead me to believe there's a bad batch of batteries.

good find

I've been looking for a second wall charger but was hoping to hold out till a charging/hdmi dock is released.

That's the best deal out there if you're a Prime member. 3rd party guy using Amazon Fulfillment. I did actually get it for myself, so I can confirm it works - there's nothing special about the USB cable.

There was something on the Sprint forums regarding some of the phones were constantly searching for a CDMA or GSM (can't recall which) signal and draining the battery looking. After disabling one, the battery life had a fairly extended duration.

Might want to check it out. Like I said, it was on the Sprint forums (and howardforums also now that I think about it). Sorry for no links. I'm sitting in the car waiting for a train to pass.

From Androidforums:

Press HOME, and bring up the dialer. Dial *#*#4636#*#* (Do not press "Call"). After a second, it should bring up the "Testing" menu.

Go into Phone Information, press MENU, and tap "select radio band." You should experience a Force Close, don't panic, this was supposed to happen. Scrolling down shows that the preferred network type is GSM auto (prl).

What this means is that even though you are connected to a CDMA network, your phone is trying to find a GSM network, preventing the radio from sleeping, and causing excessive battery drain.

Remedy this by tapping GSM auto (prl), and changing it to CDMA auto (prl).

Has increased battery life for me by alot.

same here... i was just commenting to a friend the other day, I had my phone on for 15 hours, used roughly 50/50 standby 3g and my battery was at 52%.

Open Google Talk, go into settings, make sure its NOT set to auto log in, then go to menu and sign off. Otherwise, that shit will eat up your battery.

And get one of these for your office at work.

google talk is always on for me and I have no battery issues (see comment above)
