But really, back to my original point--the dialog and voice acting. I'm hoping to get past it because I want to enjoy FFXIII.

This is definitely my least favorite part of the game, and of all JRPGs (excluding Demon's Souls).

The English voice acting ALWAYS sucks. It's horrendous. FFXIII's English track isn't that bad, but it definately isn't good. Vanille is by far the worst, being the stereotypical dumb, energetic chick who tries to copy her seiyuu counterpart by speaking in an ungodly high pitch that sounds completely unrealistic. Hope is the next worst, with his girly whines, complaints, and general annoying behavior. Snow, Lightning, and Sahz aren't that bad, but their voice acting still causes the occasional cringe.

I wish the game came with the Japanese track, which is always so less offensive to the ears.

The voice acting is outweighed, IMO, by the battle system, however, which I am really enjoying as it keeps developing.

Yea, I'm really looking forward to seeing the battle system in full effect, especially since everyone seems to really like it.

I have played computer games for over 30 years. From text games like Zork, and the early D&D games like Wizardy and Ultima. (I did not play FF until 7) Each game has it's advantages and disadvantages. I liked playing Oblivion on the PC but did not like it on my friend's PS3.

FF games we were once stuck with one character in a certain role. This was really broken in FFX when each character was able to follow the sphere grid of another character. In the end each character was the same if you went for max out stats.

FF12 I did not care for since I think the story was not that good. The combat system rocked, but you had to work on it, and tweak it for different boss battles.

With FFXIII I have not upgraded weapons yet, still in chapter 6. The battle system is great and I think the slower introduction for the battle system worked well. I just wish on the second play-through I could turn the full battle system with harder battles. At least we don't have to go through the tutorials if we don't want to.

I'm on Chapter 10 and still haven't really upgraded my weapons yet.. I was told it's best to wait til Chapter 11 to do so.

I'm quite enjoying FF so far. On like chapter 4? I think. It's great fun, though a bit too easy. I wish the battles were a bit harder, but I can't really complain. The voice acting that many find annoying I don't mind. I think they need to work in those dramatic scenes in the beginning, otherwise it comes out of nowhere and is just too cheesy and overwrought. As it's gotten going though, it's been getting really fun. I think Chapter 5 is when it really opens up :D.

So i thought i would up date my "review" since i have done chapters 5-10. probably do 10-end game later but least this way it shows how my likings/dislikings have changed.

Heres the first 5 chapter "review"
Pros
-Beautiful world. I feel the cutscenes and textures are great
-Combat system has lots of potential though right now its boring but you can feel theres more to come. Some of the party members seem more helpful than others, like using potions vs just killing.
-Theres lots of story going on (see cons though)
-Characters are all unique. none feel the same at all. I personally have no gripes with any of the characters
-Save points....some will hate it (maybe offer a hardcore mode?) but i love having quite a few save points. I might only get to play for 15 minutes or have to suddenly leave so i know i wont lose tons of gameplay if i suddenly have to turn the system off. Though i can see where this might not be what the more hardcore players want
- The tutorials do a good job of explaining everything

Cons
-Story.....Personally i was confused and lost as to what exactly was happening other than the obvious shown in the cut scenes. I think there could have been a much better intro that explained things at least a bit. Even just a voice narration instead of just BAM your in the story go read datalogs to figure things out.

-Flow of game....not sure if thats what i'd call it but whats really annoying to me is playing through 2 or 3 battles and BAM cutscene. Ok back to character, fight a battle, cutscene. That ends run forward a bit and cutscene then you switch characters. I just feel the two main issues for me right now are there are to many cutscenes (doesnt let me really get into the game before a cutscene) and the fact you keep switching characters. I'd like to play my partner leader for more than 5-10 minutes before being switched to the next. This could change later in the game and i am the only one who has seemed to mention it so its probably just me.

5-10

Pros
-Combat system has really evolved. Great opportunities to do exactly what you want. Nice being able to use whoever you want in your personal play style. I often find myself using rav/rav/com or rav/com/med and just use the others only when really needed.

-Story has really gone from being confusing to being rather interesting. A lot has been explained and is making sense now. They could have done a bit better job story telling earlier but o well.

- One thing i have liked is it is starting to get a bit less linear. Especially starting in
chapter 8
. It isnt open ended but rather you have bigger side paths and bigger areas to explore (though it takes all of a minute) but it is starting to feel more open and less crowded. Since most people know
chapter 11
is where it really opens up this is a nice gradual transition in my mind.

-I've killed basically every mob i can without really "grinding" just exploring the entire area and have yet to really have any challenges. Start of new chapter might be slightly difficult but isnt nothing serious. Bosses have been kind of easy and havent given any trouble.

- theres a lot more time spent playing than watching cut scenes. Really its down to maybe 1 or 2 in the "run" then the end of the boss one/start of next. Much more indepth feeling to me.

Cons - (most are just minor annoyances)

- Some fights you only have 2 people and they can be kind of challenging. Then you see the mob with a 3 person team and they are ridiculously easy. Just kind of feels weird sometimes to have to use strategy with a group of two then when in a 3some you just smash x.

- Not a huge thing as i could see where it would lead to problems but i wish there was 1 or 2 more paradigm slots. I'll end up with com/rav/rav and com/rav/med almost all the time and that doesnt leave much. 1 slot for like com/sab/sub one for com/sen/med and then your left with little choices to make a different paradigm. I havent really had an issue where i was like man i need this set up to beat this guy but would be nice. Could have upgraded with the crystal thing.

- Especially early (chapt 5/6) when you have shaz and vanille in the town it would be cut scene, run forward 10 steps, cut, run, cut. Seemed like it would have been more logical to make it all one cut scene to me personally.

-last thing is probably minor and will change once i start upgrading but the inventory for accessories is kind of annoying. I have every item i've got so far still. That means its kind of a big list of just "stuff" and the organization is just poor ot me. I prefer to be able to separate things out by type with spaces between the next type of item. But i am limited to just have it in one list. Weapons are fine as i can group up each weapon by who gets to use them. be nice if i could do that with accessories too or have more options for sorting.

Overall i am more hooked now than i was at the start. Everything is picking up nicely and is exciting and fun!

So uh... I'm in Gran Pulse... and is the game now supposed to be a grind fest? Because it seems fairly impossible to kill one of the King Behemoths without going Sentinel Medic Commando and sitting there for a year waiting for Lightning to do enough damage.......

Don't kill them? You aren't suppose to kill them as soon as you land in Pulse. Hell, I had a hard time surviving Sunder even after grinding on Pulse for a considerable amount of time. There are more effective ways to farm CP on Pulse if you really wanted to in Chapter 11. Killing the Robots in Mah'habara will likely yield more CP, or you can go after the Bombs in there for CP and Bomb Cores.

The only part that might require a bit of grind are for the 100% Item/Character completion achievements. Even then, you can easily do 500-600k CP in about 20 minutes post game after you've invested some time gearing your characters (Tier 2 Gear works).

I've been told you can come back to Gran Pulse later and you can kill those giant walking guys. They yield 40k CP a kill.

There are actually several types of giant walking turtles. The one's with no tusk are fairly easy to kill given that they only have 1 million HP. The ones with tusks are considerably harder to kill given that you need to disable their legs before you can truly deal damage to them. The trick is to simply play as Vanille and spam Death. You can generally kill one within 15 minutes doing so and the rewards for it are pretty decent.

Both types of turtles will change to Long Gui after completely mission 54(I think, guide is wrong on mission 51 for sure). They'll have HP that ranges from 10-15 mi.

Is it possible to fight the big molten giant thing, or is he just background flavor?

I hate to say it and maybe I'm alone in this, but I just can't get into this game. Sadly. FF VII, awesome. FFX, epic. But then again, I was a kid when those came out. 30 minutes into this I quit. I guess I prefer the Oblivion/Fallout style RPG opposed to click attack... wait... click attack... wait... click item, wait. Boring, IMO.

I wish you could change the paradigm setup in mid-battle or the setups would stay locked to a particular battle party when you switch in the same characters again.

Backround only. You interact with him on many missions, but never fight him.

Ya, wish you could do that....

Just bought this masterpiece. It supposedly sold over a million copies in NA in it's first week making it it the most successful Final Fantasy launch in franchise history. I think it will sell 5-6 million world wide, FFVII sold 9 million world wide.

I am really missing Uematsu's composing on this one. I still haven't finished chapter 11, but I am grinding like crazy.

The PS3 version runs at a higher resolution and I believe has uncompressed audio / video. Square Enix stated it runs better on the PS3, as it was developed for that console and got ported to the 360.

The 360 version actually runs smoother, but the PS3 version does look/sound better.

Music in this game is shit. Well, except the recycled final fantasy music that occasionally shows up.

PS3 or Xbox? I've been on the PS3 and it plays wonderfully with no issues.
