Gotta get a preemptive attack then keep them juggled until they're dead.

That is what I did and I got him to around 15% health. Then my stagger ran out, he stood up, and destroyed my team. He healed up to full, I summoned Odin, he killed me, Odin revived and left, then he one shot the party...

I did end up skipping a lot of battles, so I might be behind in the leveling.

smack: if this is you just entered gran pulse you prolly need some more grind before you can approach a king behemoth. if you go to the next objective there is a behemoth fighting a magrius or whatever those large tiger type things are called, if you are willing to put in the time you can get 1 to 0 health (the tiger) and kill the behmoth while they fight each other then kill the tiger.

Got through Chapter 5 tonight, and finally got that damn boss down on the 3rd try. It was hectic, but VERY satisfying once I finally got my timing and strategy down.

boss fights in this game remind me of raid encounters in WoW. All the different phases, the swapping from buffs to fighting to casting to healing to the tank drawing aggro. I wonder if this was their intention.

The only thing missing? Uber loot drops.

Sorry, I havent read through all 7 pages of this thread so this has probably already been address.

I'm still in the very beginning of the game as I'm playing as Snow
and his mother died
and the combat--and this is no offense to anyone--is fairly boring. I know I know, we pressed the X button in previous FF games but controlling one character has made it mundane (at least right now).

Can someone explain to me how it gets more interesting and how long it takes to reach that point?

A quick correction on your spoiler:
That wasn't Snow's mother....you'll understand when/if you put another hour into it.

But anyway, the battle system is very, very simplistic in the first two chapters. There's literally nothing else to do buy hit X over and over. At the beginning of Chapter 3, it introduces you to the Paradigm system, where you switch roles during battles and it makes it more fun and strategic. However, it only gives you very basic options throughout Chapter 3, but it's still more fun. Chapter 4 opens it a bit to other roles and gets you using them. Chapter 5, for me, seems to be when they throw it all together and require you to use everything at your disposal.

EDIT: I think one of the things they faltered on with this game is easing players into everything too slowly. It really shouldn't take 3 hours to get to the paradigm system, which is the main draw for the game.

That right there sums up the game perfectly. It starts off painfully slow, but gets a lot better. Especially once you get the battle team (or whatever the last option is) unlocked. Then you can really build the party for the play style you want.

Cool--I'll stick with it and see how it goes. What an odd design decision with rolling out new techniques and battle systems.

i think the story so far is kinda corny (but expected), as is the voice acting; but, the battles are def intense and fast paced -- warcrow, it definitely picks up once you learn paradigms and stuff. kind of neat

Yea, I'm having a tough time with the voice acting and the actual dialog as well.

Not to stear this thread in another direction but it would be nice to see if anyone else feels the same way. I do find myself slowly moving away from JRPGs, and that's mainly because of the weird dialog, the gasps, the grunts and just overall stories. Part of me is hoping that FFXIII will leave some of this stuff behind.

Growing up I love love loved a lot of JRPGs--especially the FF series, so I'm not totally sure what's happened. Perhaps western RPGs have really sinked their claws in me and have come so far in the last 10 years. Plus there are just so many quality WRPGs out now too?

I'm not sure. I'm kind of thinking out loud here, sorry.

I'd honestly say Chapter 7-8 before they put it all together, while you have most of the combat elements in place, without having access to all the Paradigm combinations you don't really get a great feel for the depth of it all.

I can understand what you are saying, but two things I think about this title in particular at least that to me kills WRPGs that we have seen lately, the combat system is more entertaining then BioWare and utterly destroys what Bethesda dreams of doing someday and the overall production values of the game are on a completely different planet from what we see in WRPGs. That said, the extreme linearity isn't something I'm fond of in general in games although so far I think it has worked for this title, although my expectations for FF have been in a rapid downward spiral since VII hit.

At this point in the game, with how far in I am, this is the most I have enjoyed a FF game since they were on carts. It isn't anything at all like WRPGs nor is it really like the old school FFs either, but I am certainly enjoying it.

On the graphics side of the game- I am of two very different perspectives on this one. Those that have been around these forums enough know that I am a 3D tech enthusiast and on that level this game is quite frankly bad- that said this is probably the best use of artistry I have seen this generation which far more then offsets that fact and allows me to just shut off over analyzing what shader routines they are running for any given effect and be truly immersed in the visual artistry. This ties into the production values, it seems that they reuse only a small handful of textures and even those are only ones that make sense('treasure chests' etc)- I can see why this game is pushing up on 40GB on the PS3(FMV quality is unmatched in any game I have ever seen).

I really don't feel like typing a long thought-out post, so I'll give you the basic thought I had in mind. It's possible you have fond memories of older FF titles and not of the newer titles simply because of the poor voice tracks. Older entries in the series were basically read-only, so you basically controlled the dialog in your mind. Each character had their own voice and conversations flowed more smoothly because you were the one creating them.

The newer entries into the series (starting with FFX I believe?) now have all vocal dialog, so that piece of past titles is completely gone. You're now completely dependent on the developer getting the voice and conversations right, which can really belittle a game that basically relies on storytelling. I think that was a big thing that nobody really realized was gone from these titles.

I'm having the hardest time beating the Boss at the end of this chapter. The giant ship. Anyone have and tips on beating him?

Use shrouds if you have them. Play semi-defensively until you've killed all of the ship's parts, then focus on the main thing. Its HP should be nearly depleted by then.

End game farming makes me so sleepy...... Death Death Death Death Death Death Death Death..... heal........ Death. Thank god I can read manga or something while I'm doing this.

Im putting spoiler tag justttt in case someone doesnt want to know.

I dont OVERLY remember the fight but i know i beat it one the first try. As always use Libra right away. I think it was weak to lightning or something so good to know for your people. Just buff and defbuff up at the start (if i remember you had three characters?) i just left one as medic and the other two as com/rav and go to town on the 4 "parts" of the ship. Take out the turrets first since they damage you too. Once all four parts were down just start on the the main body. After the two turrets if i remember right you could start switching to relentless assualt for extra dps or just stay as rav/com/med to be defensive.

And by the way although he had like 500k hp each part you destroy knocks off ~90k and each part has only like ~15k hp so its a nice trade off

It's completely subjective, I know, but I completely disagree at this point--the combat in Mass Effect 2 and Dragon Age is pretty spectacular. Though neither are revolutionary, they're both solid. I played both on the PC and console and I had no issues with the controls except for DA (on the X360).

In regards to Bethesda, I think what they did with combat and the VAC system was marvelous. Infact, it made it almost turnbased and given your appreciation for FFXIII I'm surprised to hear this.

But really, back to my original point--the dialog and voice acting. I'm hoping to get past it because I want to enjoy FFXIII.

I don't see any problems with the dialog and voice acting and I'm around 25 hours in. It all fits in with the story.

On the topic of WRPGs, I am glad this game doesn't take a lot from them. Sure, the sandbox style is okay, but it lacks any real focus. Take Dragon Age for example: the story was good, except with the free roam, it never felt as though there was any urgency. Same with Fallout 3... I enjoy the "linear" story because it allows it be focused.

I wasn't talking about the combat, I was talking about the gameplay.

..and yet you're missing the point of my post. Combat...gameplay, doesnt matter--you were still commenting on something I wasnt even talking about. I was pointing it out to you so you could stay on topic.
