Really, DPS need to learn to stop attacking when they pull aggro, or rather when they get close to pulling aggro. In FFXIV, it is really the DPS's job to control enmity NOT the tanks. Sure you can have a bad tank where no matter what you do, you can pull aggro, but even with good tanks a DPS needs to watch and be careful.
I have no idea how pugilists/monk rate on aggro, or damage, but It's fairly rare for me to pull aggro. And, sadly it hasn't been any kind of rocket science behind it.
Basically I just wait 3-5 seconds after the tank attacks, to let him get the mobs under control before I run up and attack. It's pretty much that simple.
Well, that and either always using assist (when the tank doesn't number the mobs), or getting on the mobs in order (when he/she does number them).
Well, i say that, but whenever there are adds in the middle of a fight, they normally make a bee line towards me. I'm guessing usually because I'm the closest pc to them, normally (since I either need to flank or be behind the mobs for my best dps, and most tanks don't bother to turn the mobs away from the party).
Then only thing I can't figure out, is when to use my ae attacks. I have 2 at the moment. One is low damage, and really only good for tagging mobs during fates, really
😀
The other is actually pretty good, and my overall dps does get a boost when I do use it. But, it uses alot of tp. And, I draw alot of aggro using it.
Normally, I just burn down 1 at a time in a group. but, if I notice all the mobs are taking damage (meaning someone else is using ae attacks), and the tank is keeping aggro, then I'll go ahead and start mixing it in as well.
