Sorry chief, but having done more than a fair share of homework on the subject given that I am actually going to have to deal with it in the near future I would be hard pressed to send my daughter to any of the schools in the "affordable towns"...the one exception would be Braintree and even that isn't that great...

Thankfully they have some decent private schools in the area, which I was lucky enough to attend in my youth...

Having known many that were products of the MA public school system I have pity for anyone who uses those in towns like Revere, Lynn, Malden, Everett, Somerville, Woburn, Wakefield, Waltham, Quincy, Brockton, Abington, and I can go on and on and on....

Unless you're in Acton, Newton, Hingham, Wayland, Westford or a few other choice towns you're pretty screwed as far as education is concerned...the one exception is Boston Latin but that is an exam school and you have to live in the city to qualify for attendance.

And last I checked all of the towns you cited are those with pretty damn high property tax not to mention cost of living expenses and real estate...the school systems in the affordable towns suck, just like everywhere else...funny how the party of the middle class really doesn't help them at all in this state

The one thing I can be thankful for is that private school for us will be on the table...I feel truly sorry for those who cannot afford it in this state nor who can not afford to live in one of those more affluent Tony towns you mentioned as they are out of reach for many...

But then again I don't expect much from the morons in this state...afterall it did take them how long to vote for selling liquor on Sundays...and we also were dumb enough to vote down allowing beer and wine sales in supermarkets.

You do know that paying for private schooling is more expensive than living in a town with a good school system and higher property taxes right? A thousand or more in property tax for a better school system (K-12) is better than paying tens of thousands every year for a private school.

Affordable housing can be found in any of the towns I've mentioned. You might have to downsize but housing values are higher and maintain there value better for a reason.

You seriously need to do some more research. And complaining about liquor sales on sunday and in supermarkets is weaksauce. Even some of the towns you look down on have better school systems than many towns in this country. They still graduate students that go to top colleges.

Quantify "better"....if your sole criteria is cheaper than sure, but also one must factor in the cost of the house and its maintenance...

I would rather spend five or ten thousand a year more in private education than support the public school system in this state, which is why I am all for tax credits and vouchers for private schooling.

Sure affordable housing can be found in any town, if you want a condo or a shack...the reality is downsizing really is "downsizing" when one talks of Lexington, Newton, Wayland or the like...

And the towns I look down on suck period...try making an argument for Slumerville or Lynn...thankfully I don't live in one of those shitholes....heck even the ghetto sends students to Ivy league from time to time...but they are still shitty schools in the ghetto.

I'm very surprised. 55-45. I talked to a friend and it makes sense. A lot of people are against it but they won't speak out for it. I'm in CA and in the past 2 weeks all I've seen is No on 8 ads. I've seen about 3 Yes on 8 ads but about 100 No on 8 ads. You would think people would vote No, but wow. I'm surprised.

As I said, short of a few good towns there isn't any "reasonable" area where I would feel comfortable sending my child, and thankfully my wife is in total agreement though she leans more towards moving to a nicer town that will bankrupt us than private schooling, then again she is far more liberal and frugal than I am.

I voted against this charter ammendment.
You either work for the federal, state or local government. You shouldn't be allowed to work for all three, or any combination of them at once.

School Borrowing

"AN ORDINANCE to authorize and empower Baltimore County, Maryland to borrow $105,204,000 for school projects to be undertaken in the ensuing fiscal years starting July 1, 2009 pursuant to Sections 705(a) and 718 of the Baltimore County Charter."

I voted for this ordinance.
Common sense. No commentary required.

Parks, Preservation and Greenways Borrowing

Capt, just because you went to a substandard school there is no need to be jealous...and the school my wife attended was far nicer than mine, both highschool, college, and graduate school.

And like I said my wife is cheap, when the time comes hopefully we will have moved out of this state and down to North Carolina or into a nicer town.

But one thing is for sure, I won't live in the same ghetto ville that you live in...or at least I presume given your defense of this shithole state...am I right in assuming you actually moved here from somewhere else?

Like I said, we can afford to live most anywhere in the state, especially if one even considers renting.

Belmont sucks, too congested, too close to the city, and massive amounts of money for virtually no land...the schools are ok but wouldn't rank them up with Winchester, Lexington, or especially not Newton....if I actually have to stomach living here I am moving to Westborough, at least out there you get a decent parcel of land and a nice smaller town.

As for where I live, sorry I don't divulge that info...but I did go to school in Hingham for grade school, jesuit catholic just outside of the city for high school, and then Umass Amherst for college...

Wheras my wife went to a very elite school in CT and then Smith followed by GW

And on the money front since you hinted at out inability to afford things...we have a pretty sizeable mortgage all things considered for a town house and pay more than what a decent private or catholic school would cost in day care fees...but have zero debt short of one new car payment...all things I am assuming you don't have to worry about.

No, I own a new custom built townhouse with a yard. Do your homework please, Belmont has one of the best public school systems in the state. Winchester and Lexington also have great school systems but I prefer being closer to the city.

Man, you're a bigger moron than I thought...if anything I am rather proud that I went to UMass, even though it was a conservative such as myself's nightmare...but it was truly refreshing when compared to the smaller schools I was used to...first a slam on volunteer firefighters and now a digg at a respectable state school, how does that shoe taste?
