How does Doom3 run compared to the Alpha? Anyone? I assume it's much smoother...?

If you just think about the question, look at the HardOCP benchmarks, and maybe do a little research, your question would be answered. An ALPHA is pre-beta, and that Alpha wans't even that, it was just a few levels compiled for E3. Therefore, if you just think about it, it's prety obvious that the game would be optimized since then. On top of that, you should be able to recall the performance of the Alpha if you are asking about it, people were reporting around 20-30 FPS with a 9700 Pro. If you look at the benches on HardOCP, you can clearly see that the performance of the final version is much higher.

I don't notice any difference between medium and high detail settings... not in image quality or frame rates.

Good to know, thanks Jeff. Looks like my system will be somewhere between Medium and High, so if I can't get High, i guess i'll be OK. Wow, that sentance is grea "so if I can't get High, i'll be OK." Yeah I need sleep...

Obviously it's going to run smoother. Obviously i can sift through and read reviews all day. One of the great things about BB's is that you can get some quick impressions/opinions from someone that's already done the research and save some time. If you did a little reading i'm sure you'd discover that people do this on bb's all the time. It's an interesting concept really. Do you really care so much that i might be wasting someone else's time? Don't you think others can judge for themselves whether on not my post is worth responding too? Yeesh.

Yeah, that is a great thing about BB"s. However, it bothers me when people can't just take a second out of their time to check themselves. Why bother other people when you can get your answer within two minutes of just common sense thinking. Well whatever, I apologize for my rudeness up above. Hope there are no hard feelings.

Any idea when Gamestop will be shipping online orders? I'm guessing tomorrow since I still haven't heard anything.

Anyone know if iD put any SMP support into this like they did for Quake 3. It was "r_smp 1" in Quake 3 to enable Multiprocessor support.

I'm wondering about Amazon as well. I couldn't order from Gamestop or EBgames because they wouldn't ship it air to my location for some reason. Instead i payed $85 for overnight from Amazon! The website says it still won't be shipped until the 6th or 7th though. Incredibly enough i've never ordered anything from Amazon so i'm not sure how fast/efficiant they are.

If anyone in madison, WI is still reading this, apparently the software etc. on the west side will be having a 7pm release today, but EB will be NOON tomorrow.

When I called software etc said I could still have been guaranteed a copy, so they must have some extras.

Here's some screen shots for ya to check out if you haven't seen the game.

1024x768 with 4XAA and 16XAF (Quality)
1280x1024 with 0XAA and 4XAF (Quality)
1280x1024 with 0XAA and 4XAF (Quality)
1024x768 with 4XAA and 16XAF (Quality)

1024x768 with no AA or AF... High Detail
1024x768 with no AA or AF... High Detail
1024x768 with no AA or AF... High Detail (looking into a mirror in this shot)

1024x768 with 4XAA and 16XAF runs pretty much the same as 1280x1024 with no AA and 4XAF as far as frame rates go... I prefer to play without any AA or AF... frame rates are much higher, and I don't notice much different. It is true what everyone has been saying... you don't need AA in Doom 3.

*EDIT* By the way, does anyone know of a program to batch convert bitmaps to jpegs? I have like 200 screenshots that would be much easier to deal with if they were jpegs.

Jeff7181: The Gimp. Freeware, opensource counterpart to Photoshop. I've never had a problem with it, except for some text issues covered in the FAQ; all that meant is that I couldn't let XP's Luna pretty-ize it when I run it on my lappy.

Mid-Georgia Availibility:

EB - Guy said Wednesday. There were "In Stock!" signs that I pointed out for him. He took them down and seemed confused, haha.
BB - Tuesday, confirmed by second employee
Gamestop - Tuesday, manager told me

Guess I'll go out tomorrow then.

maybe i should have her over so she can get scared shitless and i can tell her 'its gonna be ok'...
heh.

I've been reading the reviews, and if anything I have to say I'm more excited about the game than before. I've seen a little of the game from a demo video of an IRC-made Co-op mod and what I saw was fairly impressive. (Graphics looked good, monsters were definitely scary-looking, and it looked tough; the guy had to switch to fists and beat the crap out of some monsters 'cause he ran out of ammo[/b]) But if I am to believe the reviews I should be very happy. Graphics, textures, animations, all definite points in what I look for in a game. But something I've been longing for is a truly scary First Person Shooter. When I first played Silent Hill for the PS1 I got hooked on scary games, and because I went in on such a high quality game in terms of creepyness my standards are likewise very high. (The only games I've found since that meet my expectations in a scary game are Silent Hill 3 and the two Fatal Frame games) If Doom 3 is indeed scary as hell then there's no doubt that I'm going to go out and buy it. Just tell me it's Silent Hill "oh crap I'm so screwed" scary, not Resident Evil "Boo! EEK!" scary.
