Holy crap. Just got some decent playing time, and I had to take a break for a few minutes. This game will not necessarily scare you, but it will freak you out. I love sauntering through the base in the few moments after all hell breaks lose, and being on the edge of my seat. id has taken great care to use lighting to the fullest effect in these moments, as I was always looking everywhere, never being still. There was machinery moving all over the place, creating moving shadows on the wall. Add to this fire casting moving shadows as well, and it's hard to discern monsters from empty space sometimes. It's really amazing.
Here are my impressions:
Pros:
- Like you have heard, the graphics and lighting are unlike anything you've seen thus far. It's great stuff. The texture work is unmatched (IMO).
- This engine is optimized to the nth degree. I'm getting optimum framerates running at high detail, 12x10, 4xAA/8xAF.
- The voice work is great, with NPC's as well as the recording's via other worker's PDA logs.
- I love the interface with the computer screens around the base. It's a great way to incorporate a little life into the age old keycard ways. Instead of having a little icon of having a keycard, you now have security access, and you have to "access" the screens and actually click a button to open the door. Kinda nice instead of one second the door not opening, then the next it just opens automatically when you have clearance.
- id did not institute a limit on the flashlight. This is great, since it's needed greatly. Most games have a "battery" meter, thankfully id has given us unlimited use. This somewhat lessens the impact of having to switch from flashlight to gun.
- I've been playing with headphones on, and the sound is plain awesome. You always have noise around you, and is very well done to heighten the immersiveness.
Cons:
- Claustrophobic levels. A few times it's been hard to not get hit by an enemy, as there was no where to go. I guess this is the feel of the game, but I'd like to have a little more room to move around.
- The stupid "closets" the zombies hide in that open up behind you after you move ahead. id took careful consideration into explaining a few things to tie up some story elements (i.e. why there are chainsaws on a planet with no trees), but how do they explain zombies all of a sudden barred up inside the walls?
