The sound cards right now remind me of where graphics were before the first programmable video card (GeForce) came out. Yeah, they can offload some processing but they are still very much hard coded (for games anyway)

Please don't tell me I have to ditch my TBSC aswell! ;)

I quite liked the review that apoppin put us on to. I wonder if ATI will respond with faster drivers that are not to the detriment of IQ, AA/AF and colour depth etc etc

I know it's silly to purchase a new graphics card based on one eargerly awaited game but that 6800 Ultra and GT wet my appetite I can tell you. (A review of HL2 and STALKER would be nice just around now :p) I will however, wait and see what ATI does, but to be honest it's all a bit of a moot point as I cannot seem to get hold of either the 6800 ultra or X800XT PE anywhere so I guess I have no choice anyway. After this next round of upgrading, I'll have a 9800Pro, P4 3GHz CPU and an ASUS P4C800-E Deluxe sitting on the shelf...:) Sorry I wasn't rubiing that in. :frown:

I have a Turtle Beach Santa Cruz sound card. Does anyone know if Doom 3's 5.1 sound can be sent through the TBSC's digital out to a receiver correctly (ie map the correct channels to correct speakers) or does it need a sound card with all the speakers plugged into the various outputs specifically on the sound card?

Doom 3 handles all the sound by cpu I heard and not through the sound card's drivers like EAX or whatever, if that info helps any.

I wonder how good Doom 3 will be with headphones? Maybe it'll have a virtual 5.1 mode?

It's possible that Carmack could include realtime DD encoding, which would enable digital output 5.1 surround sound to a reciever through any digital output. Doesn't Farcry have a DD 5.1 option too?

Me too. But I think I will do a slight proc upgrade. I'm still running off a really old 1700xp. I don't want a complete overhaul, so I think I'll pick up a 2200xp for ~50 bucks. That should be sufficient for some mid-range play.

I had a 1700XP with 512MB SDRAM and 9800PRO. I upgraded to a Athlon64 with 1GB DDR400 and the 9800PRO and the difference in games was amazing. I'm expecting a very decent gaming experience in Doom3. At least good enough for me to hold off on upgrading my video card till the next generation of cards come out (early next year?).

Quick question. I apologize in advance if this has already been asked and discussed, but there is just too much to read through. :) Does anyone know if Doom3 is going to include a Co-Op mode that would allow two or more players to play through the single player missions together?

Thanks!

No co-op for the PC AFAIK... but the XBOX will have it.
This shouldn't be a problem as I'm sure a mod will be released soon after that will fix this.

Another review of Doom3...note this is copy/pasted from another forum:

Saw the scans of it. It's from PC Powerplay (a popular Aussie mag).

No mention of "lame attempts at humour", the reviewer said it "provides a much needed comic touch" amidst the tension. Reviewer seems very impressed with the level design, saying that it's exceptionally well-done for a space station.

Some worthy quotes:
"DOOM 3 is akin to a heavenly experience."

"The bar has been genuinely raised for the first time since Half-Life. DOOM 3 is the best first-person shooter ever made."

"The DOOM 3 shotgun - and believe me when I say I don't speak lightly here - is perhaps the single greatest thing ever."

"DOOM 3 is an exemplary case of just how an exquisitely balanced weapon economy can mine greater depth from a seemingly simple situation."

"Shadowy figures dart across your periphery vision, crazed voices call out for you to follow, satanic runes pulse along the walls, the screen distorts or drips blood and you'll surrender control for a moment all in an effort to unsettle you and sustain an ever present sense of menace."

"... the tale is predominantly told via voice and video links with the other main characters, while the finer details are further fleshed out through accessing emails and video and audio logs on the PDAs of the dead or missing."

"Early on you find an email from a guy complaining that an ordered shipment of jackhammers turned out to be chainsaws instead. 'What the hell were they thinking?' he writes. 'Chainsaws serve no purpose on Mars!' ;)"

Final Verdict:
For
- Gripping atmosphere
- Superb level design
- Perfect weapon balance
- Awesome graphics

Against
- We honestly can't think of any

Overall
A frighteningly intense experience and an absolute masterpiece of FPS design.

Score:
96/100

Don't know if this has been mentioned before but Doom 3 requires Win2k or WinXP - it won't run on Win9x or WinME. 'Bout time Win9x started to die. :p

Doom 3 is shipping tomorrow, Friday and will likely be available on Saturday, July 31st!! Gamestop reps said it ships from the warehouse on Friday, and they should get it Saturday by FedEx. When I called, rep said: "Yeah, Doom3 ships August 3rd sir and...uh, wait. Woah. What? It says here it's shipping tommorow!"

Yeah, the folks at the ign boards found this out too, but it looks like it "might" be only for Floridians. So, YMMV I guess.

7/29 UPDATE! - DOOM 3 TO ARRIVE EARLY?!!

Thats the word on the streets kids. I've called Gamestop (2 closest ones to me) and they both said they plan on shipping from the warehouses on the 31st and would go on sale on the 2nd - MONDAY! I personally have made my pre-order at EB. So, my third call was to the two closest ones and they both said that they might be getting it early too. So, what're you waiting for guys, CALL AND REPORT BACK! :D

It was a "computer error" by corporate gamestop if you believe that! Mistakenly changed ship date to tomorrow in their computers and conveniently discover it after tons of kids ran to change their order from another store to gamestop. Crooks if u ask me. Makes me think of gameve, lol.
