Is the ability to force AA with HDR on a very interesting feature? Does not games with full HDR implementations allow AA in the ingame settings anyway (not counting FarCry, but what about SC, AOE and DoD?)? Just asking.

This is an interesting question because DOD:Source has HDR and still allows for AA settings to be set within the game engine. It sure seemed like when I changed the AA settings the jaggies increased and decreased accordingly.

Is this a hardware or game engine limitation?

I don't believe they are able to bring it to the market before next summer.

Right but that 7800GTX 512MB version is supposed to come before X-mas....and not to be a sarcastic jerk but is ATI even going to have the XT avaliable in large quantities before X-mas?

I did some research: According to ATI themselves they are ready to ship it right now (like that's going to happen...) but the Swedish website NordicHardware.se say a release in the very beginning of 2006 is more realistic.

I don't know how reliable this information is, but that would be perfect timing for me because I'm planning to build a system in February 2006.

Hopefully the improved AF quality will the one good thing that comes out of the R52x mess.

nVidia had better follow suit with it's next gen chips or there will bew hell to pay - I was very annoyed and disappointed when they followed ATi's lead and massacred AF quality on the NV40 series.

Ironic isn't that the company that started the whole AF mess with QUAK and bilinear AF is the one (finally) taking steps to clean it back up.

Either/both- an engine can be designed to support AA w/HDR running nV hardware as you can see in DoD:S, however if you use the straightforward path that most devs do AA will not work with HDR on nVidia hardware while it can on the newer ATi hardware. Unfortunately as of now most games simply disable AA whenever HDR is enabled as that was the hardware limitation.

Amen to that.

Hehe the R580 shows up before the R520.

That is interesting. I have to admit with a 6800GT DOD:Source doesnt seem to have a problem running 1600X1200 2AA, 4AF and looks great.

Is this backend solution easy to implement for NV hardware?

The only game currently out that can use HDR+AA on current cards is with the HL2 engine, Counter Strike Source. Splinter Cell, Farcry, etc cannot use HDR+AA on any NV card.

Which was my main gripe against HDR for the past year. The frame rate hit is so large, that you have to lower your res to get playable frames, but then couldnt clean it up with AA. With the X1000 cards, you can. I dont know what frames you'll get, but its an option now.

Right now it appears ATI slightly won the performance crown.
Nvidia won the delivery crown.

Personally I am waiting until the next generation cards to upgrade ;)

how can you say ati "reclaimed the performance crown" when the card hasn't even shipped (and won't for a min. of another month)?

We still have to see what the forceware 80 drivers do. And arent they using beta ATI drivers?

Kinda like when people said AMD X2 was the better performer of the x2 and P-D, even though it took 2 weeks to 1 month to actually mass deliver the parts to most people????

well, none of the currently avail r520's take the crown from nvidia. i'd certainly like to see the xt's avail in decent quantity as the r520 feature set intrigues me, however the xt is not avail. at this time so you certainly cannot claim it's the victor. perhaps in a month or so the story will be different... but who's to say nv won't have some type of "answer"? imo it's the same "wait and see" story with ati as it has been since june...

Of as in between. Also history doesn't matter as we are talking about performance crown.

Ill await anands review but it looks like a solid card. Just such a shame it is showing up nearly 5 months after the 7800GTX. I hope Anand also tests with the newest Nvidia drivers so we can get an idea on what performance gains are too be had there.

I am curious to see what Nvidia's answer is besides releasing a new set of drivers.

When I read your reply, I was shocked at how much time had passed by. By the time the XT ships, it will have been 5 months indeed (assuming it does indeed ship in Nov.). Glad I got my GTX back in June. Just wish I would have had more time to play games as I feel I haven't made the most use of the card as I should have.

Pentuim D?????

And you don't get my analogy. You CAN say the ATI card has the performance crown even though it isn't readily availible because people said AMD had the performance crown in the dual core sector, even though they also took time to become availible.
